Fully Developed Disability Claims

2022 | Increase in VA Disability Compensation | Department of Veterans Affairs | theSITREP

The next fasted option is the Fully Developed Disability Claims program.

The primary difference between the FDDC program and filing a standard claim is the Veteran must provide all evidence upfront and certify there’s no additional evidence needed to make a claim decision.

At a minimum, the Veteran should provide:

  • All military personnel records on the condition, and
  • All service treatment records on the condition, and
  • All private medical records on the condition, and
  • All VA health records or supplementary information about related VA health records that the VA can request on your behalf

If the VA requires additional information, the claim typically gets removed from the FDDC program and is processed as a standard claim.

About 2022 Va Disability Compensation Rates

Your 2022 VA disability compensation is a monthly tax-free payment from the Department of Veterans Affairs paid to former military service members who sustained an illness or injury during their time in service. Veterans with preexisting conditions exacerbated by their time in service, or who develop service-connected disabilities following their time in service, may also apply for benefits. Veterans may also receive additional benefit due to extenuating circumstances, including their number of dependents, loss of limb or other severe injury, or by having a disabled spouse.

It is important to note that this benefit is not permanent, and it may be subject to review. On a wider scale, the VA may change its rating schedule at any time, but it may also reexamine your individual claim to judge whether your disability has improved or worsened, thus affecting your benefit amount. In case of the latter, you would want to initiate the review yourself to ensure they receive a higher benefit for a worse disability.

Veterans receiving VA disability compensation are set to see their monthly VA pay increase by 5.9% in 2022. To put that in dollars, for every $1,000 a veteran currently receives in benefits payments, they will see an additional $59 in 2022. Spouses and family members receiving survivor benefits will see the same increase in their monthly payments.

Here at the Rep for Vets, we have long felt that VA payments are not keeping up with the increasing cost of living. The annual cost of living adjustment has averaged around 1.5% for the last 10 years, so this years increase of 5.9% is good news for veterans.

History of VA Cost of Living Adjustments since 2010

2022
2010 0.0%

Starting this January, veterans will get the same cost of living increase in their benefits payouts that Social Security recipients get. Thats thanks to passage of the Veterans Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act, a rare bipartisan success story.

The 2022 compensation bump is no doubt driven by inflation . But its more than just a rate adjustment tied to inflation. It represents a quality of life guarantee for veterans who served honorably and are now dealing with service-connected disabilities that make it hard to work and provide.

Standard Va Disability Claims

Army Pay Chart 2022

With standard VA disability claims, the VA gathers evidence and compiles all supporting documents.

If the VA is unable to obtain a needed document, they may require your help. When help is required, it typically applies to documents not held by a federal agency, such as private medical records, employer information, and documents from state or local governments.

As with all claims programs, be prepared to provide your DD214 , service treatment records, VA medical records, and private medical records about your claim. Those needing help applying for their VA disability claim may also work with an accredited attorney, claims agent, or Veterans Service Officer .

About The Va Disability Rating System

Veterans with a disability that developed or worsened while serving in the military or due to military service may be eligible for Service-Connected disability pay.

Conditions covered by these benefits typically include:

  • Physical disabilities including hearing loss, chronic back pain, asthma and cancers caused by contact with toxic chemicals.
  • Mental disabilities including anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder , depression and traumatic brain injury .

Find a complete list of covered conditions here.

For every disability claim, the Department of Veterans Affairs assigns a severity rating ranging from 0-100%. This rating moves in 10% increments, is based on service treatment records, VA medical records, and private medical records directly relating to the disability.

For Veterans with more than one disability, the VA uses the combined rating table to calculate your disability percentage.

Va Disability Rates 202: Huge Increase In Veterans Benefits

The financial experts who track VA disability rates have raised their projections for 2023 to 8.9%. Up until a month ago, disability rates in 2023 were projected to increase at a lower cost of living rate, but the financial experts I follow are predicting that number to rise.

To put this in perspective for you, in 2022 the cost of living for veterans benefits was only 5.9% which was the biggest COLA increase in history. This latest projection is 3 points higher than the 2022 cost of living adjustment.

Lets take a look at the numbers on this simple spreadsheet so you can understand how these predictions will affect you and the annual VA disability rates for 2023. Here are the VA Disability Rates for 2022 that we are currently getting paid on the left column and the right column reflects the 8.9% increase which is the VA Disability Rates 2023.

Department of Veterans Affairs.

If you have a service-connected disability, you may be eligible to receive a monthly compensation payment. What Is The Aid And Attendance Benefit

VA Disability Increase in 2022 | Three things every Veteran needs to know | theSITREP

The VAs Aid and Attendance benefit is designed to help lessen the financial burden of qualified veterans and/or their surviving family members who need additional help with day-to-day activities. This benefit is an additional payment added to existing disability benefit amounts.

Specifically, the Aid and Attendance program provides tax-free payments to veterans who served during wartime. In addition to veterans themselves, veterans surviving spouses and dependent children also are eligible to receive Aid and Attendance benefits. To be eligible for this extra benefit, the veteran or their surviving spouse or dependents must meet specified income and asset thresholds.

Aid and Attendance is one of the lesser-known VA benefits. It is a VA medical rating that allows for additional financial support in the case of veterans, surviving spouses, or qualifying dependents who need the regular aid and attendance of a caregiver.

If a disabled veteran, surviving spouse, or dependent needs assistance with daily activities like bathing, feeding, and dressing, they may qualify for an Aid and Attendance benefit payment. In addition, if a veteran or family member is confined to a bed because of a rated, service-connected disability or medical condition and/or is a patient in a nursing home or suffers from limited eyesight, an additional Aid and Attendance benefit may be approved by the VA.

Specific eligibility requirements associated with Aid and Attendance include the following:

Cost Of Living Adjustments For Va Disability Benefits

2022 VA Disability Pay Chart and Compensation Rates

The federal government adjusts VA disability compensation each year to account for increases in the cost of living. Generally, the VA announces the cost-of-living adjustment for the year each October, at the beginning of the federal fiscal year. The adjustment then takes effect in December.

Following a COLA increase of 1.3% in 2021, the VA has already announced that the COLA is increasing payment benefits by 5.9% in 2022. This translates to a sizeable increase for those with a close to 100% or a 100% disability rating. Keep in mind that the increase goes into effect on December 1st and will remain in place all of next year.

How Do I Determine My Va Disability Compensation

To determine your disability compensation, you need to file a claim with VA. The VA rates your disability by severity after reviewing every piece of evidence in your claim.

You may only receive compensation for a single diagnostic code per condition, even if that condition satisfies more than one diagnostic code. However, those with more than one condition may receive additional compensation based on the combined rating system.

You may receive additional compensation if:

  • You have very severe disabilities or loss of limb
  • you have a spouse, children, or dependent parents
  • you have a seriously disabled spouse

Note: If you have more than one child or your spouse receives Aid and Attendance benefits , be sure to include the figures from the “Add” row.

Calculating Multiple Va Disability Ratings

The VA uses a special method for calculating multiple disabilities.

Here is a simplified example:

Example: If you have a 30% disability rating, the VA would multiply that against 100%, which is assumed to be good health. This gives you 30%. Subtract that from 100% which leaves you with 70% . Then subtract 70% from 100% and you are left with 30%. If that is your only disability, then your final VA Service-Connected Disability Rating is 30%.

If you have multiple ratings, you continue with the process, using your final number each time as your starting point. Continuing with our example, if your next rating is 10%, you would multiply 10% against 70%, which is 7%. You subtract that from 70%, which leaves you with 63%. Subtract 63% from 100% and you get 37%. Your disability rating is 37%, which rounds up to 40%.

It can get complicated quickly, so I have an in-depth article and podcast that explain how the VA calculates combined disability ratings. I highly recommend reading and/or listening to get a good idea of how the process works!

Getting Help With Filing And Tracking Va Disability Claims

Will Va Disability Rates Increase In 2021

You do not have to apply for VA medical benefits or compensation alone. Agencies called Veterans Service Organizations are authorized to act on your behalf to file with the government.

Getting the right help is especially important if you fear your medical claims may be denied or are trying to appeal a denied claim.

Such organizations include AMVETS, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars , DAV and more. The VA website has a list of accredited Veteran Service Organizations you can use to find help with your claim.

Your state government may also be able to help you. Check with your states veteran department to see what services it offers.

Determining Your Va Disability Compensation Rate

In general, veterans disability ratings determine their VA compensation rate. If a veteran has multiple service-connected conditions, their combined disability rating determines their monthly compensation rate.

Combined disability ratings are calculated by adding together the disability ratings of each individual service-connected condition using VA math. Since VA math can be confusing and challenging, CCK developed a VA disability calculator to help veterans more easily calculate their combined ratings.

Veterans with a combined rating of 30 percent or higher and qualifying dependents may also be eligible for additional compensation. Qualifying dependents include:

  • A spouse
  • Children under the age of 18
  • Children between the age of 18 and 23 who are in school

Monthly compensation amounts based on dependent status can be found using our 2022 VA Disability Pay Chart.
