However, its important to note that as a veteran, you may have access to VA healthcare even if you dont have a VA rating, depending on your income. Some services never require a copay. These include:

  • Any care for a service-connected disability

While we dont go into detail about VA dental care in this post, at a minimum, you may be eligible for dental care to treat any issue thats making your service-connected disability worse or harder to treat.

Search For Financial Assistance From The Government

Benefits.gov is a free website that can help you determine which types of government assistance you might qualify for. You can also find out how and where to apply.

  • Using the Benefit Finder, answer questions about yourself and your needs. Afterwards, you can find out if youre eligible for programs to help you pay for:
  • Utilities and other necessities

Check back with Benefits.gov in the future to see if youre eligible for additional benefits. You can report major life events or see if new benefit programs have become available.

List Of Benefits For Veterans 30% Disabled

In addition to the benefits listed above, veterans who are rated at least 30 percent disabled by VA may also add eligible dependents to their VA benefits, thereby increasing the amount of disability compensation they receive each month. For VA purposes, a dependent is a family member who relies on the veteran financially and meets certain criteria. Eligible dependents include the following:

  • Unmarried children who are: under the age of 18 between ages 18 and 23 and attending school full-time or seriously disabled prior to reaching the age of 18
  • Parents in the veterans direct care whose net worth and income are below the limit put in place by law
  • Parents are defined as those who, for at least one year, stood in the relationship of a parent to a veteran at any time before their entry into active service.

VA has a different form to add each type of dependent outlined above. If the forms listed below are submitted within one year of the veterans 30 percent disability rating grant, the effective date of the Veterans benefit increase should be that of their original grant of benefits. The forms are as follows:

  • Automotive adaptive equipment
  • Home improvement and structural alteration grants
  • Clothing allowance benefits
  • Dependents health care
  • Emergency care at a non-VA facility
  • Foreign medical care

Travel Pay Disability Benefits For Veterans With A 0% Rating

Starting at the 0% rating level, youll receive travel pay for care related to a service-connected disability at VA facilities and VA-approved care in your local community. The VA may pay for these travel costs:

  • Mileage to and from your appointments
  • Bridge, road, and tunnel tolls
  • Meals and lodging in some cases

Youre also eligible for special mode transportation in an ambulance or wheelchair van if your VA provider approves it in advance or if its required.

Healthcare Benefits For Veterans With A 30% Va Disability Rating

Veterans with a 20% rating are eligible for no-cost healthcare and prescription medications for service-connected disabilities. When it comes to any medical issues outside of your service-connected disabilities, veterans with a rating of 30% are typically placed in Priority Group 2.

Your VA healthcare benefits under this priority group include:

  • Free inpatient care for service-connected disabilities
  • Free outpatient care for service-connected disabilities
  • Your first three urgent care visits are free
  • A copay for prescription medications unless the medication is for a service-connected disability

Dental Care Benefits For Veterans 100% Disabled

With a 100 percent disability rating or TDIU status, veterans may be eligible to receive some or all of their dental care through VA. Eligibility for VA dental care is categorized into classes. The class the veteran is in determines the benefits they will receive.

Veterans with 100 percent disability ratings are categorized into Class IV. Importantly, these veterans are eligible for any needed dental care, such as scheduled cleanings and X-rays. It also includes restorative procedures such as fillings, crowns, bridges, and dentures. Any oral surgeries that veterans might require, such as tooth extractions, root canals, and reconstructive surgeries due to trauma or serious illness are covered as well.

The states income tax code provides a tax credit for property tax paid by a disabled veteran or surviving spouse. This benefit varies depending on disability rating and the familys income. Use the MI-1040CR-2 to apply for the tax credit. Even if no income tax is due, an eligible veteran may still submit a MI-1040CR-2 to receive the income tax credit as a tax refund.
