The traveling freedom bell, which has made ceremonial stops at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C., war memorials, 9/11 Ground Zero, Normandy, France and other patriotic places, is finding a permanent home.
Its resting place between patriotic sojourns will be at the Veterans Museum at 2115 Park Blvd. in Balboa Park. A 10 a.m. dedication ceremony on Wednesday is expected to be attended by Medal of Honor recipients John Baca and Jay R. Vargas and local military and political leaders. Video recorded messages are being relayed from President Donald Trump, the Acting Secretary of Defense and the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
Beginning June 1, the bronze bell will be rung each morning in honor of specific veterans and first responders who have served and, in some cases died, for their country, explained museum Chairman and President Jack Harkins. The daily ceremony will be live-streamed and the names added to an online honor roll of Americas patriots.
This will certainly help build increased interest, said Harkins, noting that the museum currently has about 50,000 visitors a year. It is being renovated to open more floor space, especially near the entrance.
Active duty service members hold services there for promotions, commissions, re-enlistments and retirements.

The Veterans Memorial Center, Inc. was formed in March 1989 to create, maintain and operate an institution to honor and perpetuate the memories of all men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces and Wartime Merchant Marine.
The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park was chartered to serve five categories of function:
- Serve as a museum presenting permanent, rotating and visiting exhibits of patriotic, military and war-related memorabilia, artifacts, photographs, and other artwork.

When you walk into the Veterans Museum at Balboa Park, you know right away that you have stepped into a place that is special. Formerly the chapel for the Naval Hospital on Inspiration Way, the first thing one notices upon entering is the vaulted ceilings and stained glass, then our nations many flags, extensive war murals from World War II and Vietnam, signed by many heroes now gone. Although, the most amazing feature of this sacred site are the stories of our nations heroes living in our display cases and hanging on our walls. You can almost hear their voices drifting up to the rafters through their mementos.
Built in 1945, the chapel served as a hub for many veterans for decades. Built with diversity in mind, the museums stage houses a rotating pulpit representing Judaism, Catholicism and Christian. Many World War II veterans found redemption and peace beneath the museums lofty rafters. They also married their sweethearts and brought their children to attend church there.
The museum also functions as a unique and beautiful San Diego events venue. VMBP caters strongly to San Diegos active duty community, serving as a perfect location to book military promotions, retirements and memorials. It is also available for weddings, fundraisers and seminars.

Museum Of Photographic Arts
As one of only three independent museums in the nation dedicated solely to the lens-based medium, the Museum of Photographic Arts aims to inspire, educate and engage through the innovative collection and presentation of photography, film and video. Exhibitions are presented in English and Spanish, with work from the museums archive as well as from contemporary artists. The museum also stores a permanent collection of nearly 9,000 images. The Edmund L. and Nancy Dubois Library strengthens the permanent collection with more than 24,000 items, all related to photography.

During World War II the U.S. Navy actually took control of Balboa Park. Balboa Park was renamed Camp Kidd in honor of Rear Admiral Isaac Kidd who was killed during the Pearl Harbor attack.
The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park is located in the former chapel of the Naval Hospital completed in 1945. The Naval Hospital is still next door, but most of this area is now part of the largest parking area for Balboa Park. Right in front of the museum you can catch a free shuttle to the rest of the park.
In front of the museum you will find the Veterans Memorial Garden. This garden was dedicated in 2005. The garden is highlighted by a central amphitheater with a statue of a WWII B-24 Liberator.
The area directly above the museum is called Inspiration Point. From here you can get great views of downtown San Diego and planes landing at the San Diego airport.
The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park is a low-key attraction, but it is packed with information. Admission is only $5 for adults and $2 for students. Active military and children under 12 are free. The museum is free for San Diego residents on the second Tuesday of each month as part of the Free Tuesday program.

San Diego Air & Space Museum
As one of only a handful of air and space museums in the country to be an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, the San Diego Air & Space Museum is home to a collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft illustrating the history of flight. The collection includes a flight-worthy replica of Charles Lindberghs Spirit of St. Louis, the actual Apollo 9 Command Module, and the only real GPS satellite display in the world. Explore History And Celebrate Those Who Served
The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park honors the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces, Coast Guard and Wartime Merchant Marine. Located in Balboa Park in the former WWII era Navy Chapel adjacent to the Veterans Memorial Garden with its B-24 Memorial and on the east side of the museum is the San Diego Vietnam Peace memorial listing all the San Diegans who were killed or listed as MIA during Vietnam.
The museum houses exhibits and displays honoring the contributions of American Service men and women are surrounded by artwork, murals, and multimedia displays throughout the museum. Seven murals by renowned painter Richard DeRosset adorn the walls of the museum and WWII era stained glass windows by Fred Wyland highlight the contributions of the Naval Hospital Staff, Patients, Navy Personnel and Commands and Veterans Organizations.
The museum has a Military History Research Library with over 7,000 volumes, periodicals and multimedia in the collection and maintains an active veterns oral history project in partnership with the Library of Congress.
Docent led tours are available for groups and the museum also hosts book signings, historical seminars and programs, ceremonies and public events celebrating the contributions of Veterans including the annual San Diego Veterans Day Parade.
