Can I Add A Driver Who Only Has A Provisional Licence

Can u buy a car while on SSI?

You can learn to drive in the Motability vehicle provided you are:

  • The disabled customer
  • Shown as a permitted driver on the Certificate of Motor Insurance
  • Accompanied by a driver aged 21 or over who has held a full valid licence for at least three years. Preferably a driver named on your Motability policy.

Other proposed drivers will be subject to certain restrictions. Any drivers with provisional licences must be 21 or over if you want them to drive your vehicle. You can only have one learner driver on your Certificate of Motor Insurance at any one time. If the driver is under 25 then further restrictions will also apply.

Parking Offences And Disabled Spaces

It is an offenceto park a vehicle in a disabled parking space unless you have a valid card.If you illegally park in a disabled parking space, you will get a parking fineof 150. This increases to 225 if not paid within 28 days.

Traffic wardens and members of An Garda Síochána have the power to requestand inspect a parking card to ensure it is not being misused.

‘she Hadn’t Got A Clue’

Despite being an amputee with spina bifida, who is only able to take a few steps, Christine Mitchell did not score the points she needed to keep her Motability car.

She appealed and eventually won, but is extremely critical of the reassessment process.

“I explained to the lady in detail that I wasn’t able to walk. She asked me how far I could walk, and there was a filing cabinet that was maybe 3ft away, and I said I could possibly walk that far.

“It was so frustrating. I looked at my husband and I was near enough in tears because I couldn’t make her understand.

“She hadn’t got a clue what spina bifida was.”

Some 360,000 people will eventually undergo PIP reassessments, including those currently on an “indefinite” or “lifetime” DLA award.

Disabled children will continue to receive DLA until they reach the age of 16 and those who were aged 65 or over on 8 April 2013 are also unaffected.

Liz Sayce, chief executive of Disability Rights UK, told the BBC “being disabled costs money”.

“The Personal Independence Payment is supposed to help with those costs, but many people are being denied the benefit because they are not assessed properly.

“Sometimes that means people lose their cars a massive blow which impacts on their ability to remain independent, take part in their communities or get and keep a job.”

Minister for Disabled People Justin Tomlinson said people’s circumstances changed over time and it was right they should be reassessed.

If your condition affects your ability to drive safely, such as epilepsy, your car insurance cost could be affected.

Each disability will come with its own needs for car modification. The list is endless, depending on what each individual needs, explains Michael Lowe, CEO of CarPassionate. As a lifelong car aficionado, he has been working with cars since childhood and now shares expert advice, tips and guides. There are some insurance companies that specifically focus on this area as one of their main selling points, which could be useful if you want an insurer you know will understand the changes and the reasons for them.

One factor that insurance providers look for is what kind of drivers license you have. Certain medical conditions require that you obtain a drivers license with a special disability designation.

The NHTSA offers Driver Fitness Medical Guidelines to assist insurance providers with the medical evaluation of disabilities. Your car insurance coverage may be affected if any of the following is affected by your disability:

    • Limited or poor vision
    • Temporary medical conditions, such as those resulting from surgery or another intensive medical procedure

Car Buying Tips On Social Security Disability

Buying a car when you must rely on Social Security disability benefits is never easy. Lenders and dealers prefer shoppers who are gainfully employed and have money to spare after funding their food, clothing, and shelter needs each month.

Social Security benefits cover these necessities for disabled individuals with little funding left over for other uses such as transportation. Therefore, a strategy to get you behind the wheel could help you then drive out of the showroom.

The Social Security Administration runs two disability programs with different benefit levels and rules: SSDI and SSI. Find unique car buying tips for each below.

What Items Does The Ssa Not Consider As Resources

When you apply for SSI disability benefits the home that you live in and the land that home is on is not considered in your resource pool. Certain personal effects are also not counted as resources, such as your wedding ring or engagement ring. Burial spaces, burial funds and life insurance policies with a combined value of $1,500 or less are also not considered as resources when applying for SSI benefits from the SSA.

In addition to the above, scholarships or gifts that have been set aside to pay for educational expenses cannot be counted towards your resources for nine months after the receipt of said gifts, grants or scholarships.

In many cases, assistance received from other agencies is not counted towards your resource limit. The forms of assistance that may not count towards your resource limit include energy assistance, food stamps, cash received for medical or social services that do not count as income . If you have any questions whether or not a specific resource can be counted towards your resource limit, it is best to ask an SSA representative or consult with a qualified social Security Disability attorney.

Is Your Condition Found In The List Of Disabling Conditions

For each of the major body systems, we maintain a list of medical conditions that we consider severe enough that it prevents a person from doing substantial gainful activity. If your condition is not on the list, we have to decide if it is as severe as a medical condition that is on the list. If it is, we will find that you are disabled. If it is not, we then go to Step 4.

We have two initiatives designed to expedite our processing of new disability claims:

    • Compassionate Allowances: Certain cases that usually qualify for disability can be allowed as soon as the diagnosis is confirmed. Examples include acute leukemia, Lou Gehrigs disease , and pancreatic cancer.
    • Quick Disability Determinations: We use sophisticated computer screening to identify cases with a high probability of allowance.
