Symptoms Of Borderline Personality Disorder

People with borderline personality disorder will exhibit a certain pattern of maladaptive behaviors that make it more difficult for them to maintain close relationships, and they suffer emotionally for their disorder. For instance, many people will experience wild mood swings that will last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. They often have feelings of emptiness and hopelessness, and they can sometimes have intense anger, irritability, shame, anxiety, and bitterness.

Additionally, some people might act out on their feelings, losing their tempers, being sarcastic, or getting into physical fights. They might also engage in self-injury in response to being rejected or feeling like theyve been rejected. Some people are more likely to engage in a variety of types of risky behavior, including unsafe sex, gambling, unsafe driving, drug abuse, spending sprees, quitting a good job, or simply going on an eating binge.

Impulsive Anger Is One Symptoms Of Borderline Personality Disorder

This disorder also may involve ;impulsive anger and behavioral expression grossly out of proportion to any provocation. Perhaps you lost your temper at your supervisor or other employees. Other examples might be road rage that results in your getting out of your car and pounding on someone elses car. Or, for example, you might chase another driver in your car because you are angry. Likewise, you may think you are the only person at work who can do the job correctly. Perhaps you threaten other employees when you think they are not doing a good job. These are extreme examples of impulsive anger. Does this sound like you?

Examples of disorders in this category include paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal, and borderline. It also includes avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive personality disorders, and intermittent explosive disorder. Obviously, there are many titles and definitions in this category of mental illness. Most of the symptoms of these disorders involve difficulty getting along with others. This may make you ask, what is borderline personality disorder? For purposes of disability benefits, it is best to focus on the disabling symptoms of the disorder. A list of the possible symptoms are found below.

The 10 personality disorders are divided into three general clusters corresponding to their type or commonalities: Cluster A , Cluster B , and Cluster C . Everyone has some maladaptive personality traits that manifest in stressful situations but are not pathological. Also, at some point, almost everyone has exhibited traits of all of these disorders. However, not everyone has these diagnoses. For example, someone experiencing the end of a relationship may be emotionally labile, vacillating between feelings of love and feelings of hate for the other person. This individual does not have a personality disorder because this is not an enduring pattern of experience and behavior, but rather a normal response to a stressful…

Is Bpd A Disability

BPD is characterized as a mental condition. It may pass as a disability, but it often requires certification from a medical professional and the person has to be under treatment for the condition. The treatment for BPD is often similar to treatment for other mental illnesses such as psychotherapy and medication.

To apply for eligibility for disability, a person with BPD must prove that the mental health condition interferes or hinders his/her ability to work. Usually, medical evidence showing how the mental health condition affects the persons ability to work is required for social security institutions. Also, these interferences must be recurring for at least a year.

Causes & Risk Factors

Our current understanding is that a persons genetic inheritance, biology and environmental experiences all contribute to the development of BPD. A person is born with certain personality or temperamental characteristics because of the way his or her brain is wired, and these characteristics are further shaped by environmental experiencesand possibly by cultural experiencesas the person grows up.

Researchers have found differences in certain areas of the brain that might explain impulsive behaviour, emotional instability and the way people perceive events. As well, twin and family history studies have shown a genetic influence, with higher rates of BPD and/or other related mental health disorders among close family members.

Environmental factors that may contribute to the development of BPD in vulnerable individuals include separation, neglect, abuse or other traumatic childhood events. However, families that provide a nurturing and caring environment may still have children who develop BPD, while children who experience appalling childhoods do not necessarily develop BPD.

Though histories of physical and sexual abuse are reported to be high among those with BPD, many other experiences can play a role for a child who is already emotionally vulnerable.

    Personality Disorders Disability Benefits

In the United States, there is an unfortunate stigma associated with asking for help on a mental health condition. This is as true in the military world, if not more, as it is in civilian society. Though millions of people face an array of mental health challenges in this country, many choose not to seek help in the face of mental illness. For veterans whose jobs and families require unwavering mental fortitude, seeking help isnt just a good idea its often the only way to survive.

Unfortunately, personality disorders are not recognized as disabilities by the VA. For veterans to receive benefits for personality disorders, their condition must stem from a psychiatric condition incurred in or aggravated by their military service. For example, borderline personality disorder benefits are not granted if there is evidence of the condition pre-dating the veterans service. This distinction makes seeking disability benefits from the VA even more difficult than usual, but it can be disputed if your military service aggravated the condition.
