Social Security Disability Insurance is for people who qualify as disabled and have paid enough Social Security taxes through past employment to reap additional benefits.
SSDI recipients are also allowed to work, and the rules are more lax because they have paid taxes into the system for much longer.

If You Become Disabled While You Are Employed

If you have been disabled more than seven days, your employer must give you a Statement of Rights under the Disability Benefits Law within five days of learning that you are disabled .
- A day of disability is a day on which you were prevented from performing work because of disability and for which you have not received regular wages or remuneration. What Is The Trial Work Period
The SSA allows you to test your ability to work without losing your SSDI benefits. This trial work period allows you nine months in a five-year period to work without worrying about risking your benefits. The nine months do not have to be consecutive.
It is important to note that only a certain amount of money will trigger a month of service. For the year 2017, if a person earns more than $840 a month, that month will count as a month of service toward the total of nine months. This means any months that you make below this amount do not count as part of your trial work period.

How Much Will I Receive From Sdi
Your benefit amount is calculated based on the amount of earnings you had in the highest-earning quarter of your base period, and is about 60-70 percent of your regular earnings. In 2018, the maximum amount of SDI you can receive is $1,216 per week. SDI payments are processed every two weeks.
The entire amount you receive in SDI benefits from a single claim may not exceed the total amount of wages you earned during your base period.

Are My Benefits Subject To Income Tax
If you qualify for benefits under the Plan, the amount you receive will be subject to income tax. At the end of each year, the Insurer will send you a form indicating the total amount of benefits paid to you during that particular year. Prior to January 1, 2015, withholding income taxes from DI benefit payments was an option a Disability Insurance Plan member could select. Effective January 1, 2015, the Canada Revenue Agency has made it mandatory for income taxes to be withheld from all DI benefits. Therefore the ensurer, in accordance with the Canada Revenue Agency, will automatically deduct income taxes at source. Theres a special rule for when you work part of the year but then retire. Regardless of your total earnings, youre still entitled to get Social Security checks for any month in which youve officially retired.
As an example, say you retire early at 63 and decide that youre going to quit your $200,000-per-year job at the end of June.
