Ssns And Identity Theft

Social Security numbers are frequently used as a personal identifier and to obtain credit. They contain no biometrics and rely on documentation to prove validity. They are susceptible to use for identity theft and fraud.

A notable example of this is when the chief executive officer of identity theft prevention service LifeLock used his SSN in advertisements as a testament to his company’s effectiveness. His identity was later stolen multiple times.

There has been some movement among legislators to separate some activities from SSN use, such as renting an apartment or obtaining a hunting or fishing license.

Most significantly, and perhaps surprisingly, criminal records are not tied to SSNs. An individuals criminal charge may or may not include their SSN, so a clean criminal record check using SSN alone is not particularly meaningful. Its a start, but its by no means the whole story. However, using information gleaned from an SSN check that includes names and aliases as well as former addresses, skilled background screeners can search criminal records databases to find evidence of an individuals criminal history. So, while your SSN by itself will not reveal a criminal history, its nonetheless very difficult to run a thorough criminal background check without the additional information provided by a thorough SSN trace.

Escalate that fraud alert to a credit freeze

If there’s fraudulent activity on your credit report it means that criminals are trying to use your Social Security number so the time has come to go ahead and freeze your credit report. That will make it much harder for them to do any more damage.

For more information on placing acredit freeze see Placing a credit freeze.

Report it to Federal Trade Commission

If you have fraudulent activity in your name, the FTC wants to know about it. Go tohttps://IdentityTheft.gov and follow the steps there to report the fraudulent activity.

Contact the companies with fraudulent accounts

Contact the companies for any accounts you don’t recognize. Tell them you’re a victim of identity theft and that you suspect the account is fraudulent. Ask when and how the account wasopened and any information they can share on when and how the account has been used. That information will be helpful when you file a police report.

    Tips:

    • It’s always best to remember that the company you’re contacting didn’t realize the account was fraudulent and they’re almost as interested in resolving this as you are. They’re unlikely to get paid for the fraudulent account.

    • If they’re having difficulty resolving the fraudulentaccount for you, ask if it would make things easier if you had a police report. If they agree that it would be, make a note to come back to them after step 3 .

What To Do When Someone Is Using Your Social Security Number

When an identity thief has a victim’s Social Security number, he or she has a passport to commit Social Security fraud, identity theft, and many other crimes. This is one of the many reasons why people should never carry their Social Security cards in their wallets or purses. From the time of issuance when we’re children, Social Security cards should be stored in a safe location at home, away from credit cards, drivers’ licenses, and other personal information.

If you suspect that a criminal has your Social Security number, the Social Security Administration can help point you in the right direction, but it can’t fix your credit. You’re the only one who can do that. To that end, here are some things to do if someone is using your Social Security number to commit identity theft and Social Security fraud:

    1. Stay cool and focused. While identity theft is stressful, you’re the only person who can help with this problem, and you can’t solve it in a week or a month. It will take time. Stay as calm and focused as possible, and methodically address the problem.

    2. Contact the credit reporting agencies.Contact TransUnion, Equifax, or Experian to place a fraud alert on your credit report. Each agency is required to alert the other two when you place an alert. The alert will prevent a thief from opening any new accounts in your name.

    File Fraudulent Tax Returns

How to Decipher a Social Security Number

Your Social Security number is also used to file your taxes in most cases. Someone who has your SSN can file a fraudulent tax return in your name to be able to claim a refund or stimulus money. You often dont know that a fraudulent tax return has been filed until you go to file your own. It can take months to straighten things out with the IRS, and this can keep you from being able to access your own refund in the meantime.

It’s Incredibly Easy To Figure Out Someone Else’s Social Security Number

The way people talk about social security numbers would have you believe that keeping it a secret is vital. But, as CGP Grey explains in a new video, if someone is serious about stealing an identity via an SSN-assuming the card was issued before 2011-all they have to do is piece together a few facts.

The first three digits of a person’s SSN refer to the state in which the card was applied for. Easy enough. The second chunk of digits follow a regular pattern, and the last four digits count up in order. If you know where and when someone was born, you can probably just get the corresponding numbers off a chart and guess the rest. Alternatively, if you get the last four digits of someone’s SSN from a leak-these are regularly given to hospitals, universities, and other institutions for identification-the other digits aren’t too hard to deduce.

That also means that if you subtract one from the last four digits of your own SSN, you likely just identified someone born in the same hospital around the same time as you. All the while keeping in mind that your SSN was issued on a piece of flimsy cardboard without photo ID that you likely lost 15 years ago. Feeling secure?

Request A Credit Freeze Or Fraud Alert

A restricts access to your credit report and helps prevent fraudsters from opening new accounts, renting apartments or applying for loans in your name. Freezing your credit will not affect your credit score, and you can unfreeze and refreeze your credit report at any time.
