When applying for disability benefits through the Social Security Administration , you will need to present evidence showing that you have been unable to work for at least a 12-month period.     “This is a really critical safety-net benefit,” says Rich Fuerstenberg, a senior partner at human resources consultant Mercer.

    If you become disabled because of accident, injury or illness, long-term-disability insurance typically pays 50 percent to 60 percent of your income, while you’re unable to work. The length of time the policy pays varies some policies pay until you reach age 65.

    Many long-term-disability claims are for chronic problems such as cancer and musculoskeletal conditions. According to the Council for Disability Awareness, the average duration of a claim is nearly three years 34.6 months.

    Not everyone has savings to support them through that time. In 2015, when the Federal Reserve Board surveyed adults about household economics, 53 percent said they don’t have a rainy day fund that could cover them even for three months. More troubling, nearly half of respondents 46 percent said that faced with a hypothetical $400 emergency expense, they don’t have the cash to cover it.

    According to the Social Security Administration, 1 in 4 people who are 20 years old now will be disabled before they reach age 67.

    However, as employers continue to shift the cost of various benefits onto workers’ shoulders, long-term-disability insurance is no exception. Increasingly, they’re offering the coverage as a “voluntary” benefit, meaning employees pay the entire premium.

    What Counts As A Disability

    There isnt one standard definition for a disability that applies across the board here.

    Its all plan- or policy-specific, says Chicago-based attorney Michael Bartolic, whose firm focuses on employee benefits and deferred compensation. As a general observation, its any sort of injury or illness that renders one unable to do their job.

    That could include things like childbirth, a major surgery with a long recovery period, an illness that requires frequent treatment, or an injury sustained in some sort of accident. Bartolic explains that the best thing to do is to check your plan documents, as the definition of disability should be clearly spelled out there.

    Effects of Other Income Benefits- This plan is structured to prevent your total benefits and post-disability earnings from equaling or exceeding pre-disability earnings. Therefore, we reduce this plans benefits by an amount equal to any Social Security retirement and/or disability benefits payable to you, your dependents, or a qualified third party on behalf of you or your dependents.     Retirement Pay Calculations Under The Temporary Disability Retirement List

    One of two options are used to calculate the benefitwhich one is used? According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the pay is calculated at whichever method provides the greater advantage for the veteran:

    • Pay calculated on your disability percentage. This calculation uses a minimum of 50 percent while on the temporary list. This is known as Method A.

    You should apply for disability benefits as soon as you become disabled. Follow these easy steps to apply online for disability:

    • To start your application, go to our Apply for Benefits page, and read and agree to the Terms of Service. Click Next.

    Governments often run into trouble crafting disability policies because disabilities manifest in “massively heterogeneous ways,” according to Mary Ann McColl, a professor at Queen’s University and academic lead for the Canadian Disability Policy Alliance.

    “In the federal government alone, there are seven different definitions of disability that we’ve been able to find,” she explained, including sensory disabilities, physical disabilities and others. Which category someone’s disability falls under will determine which types of supports you do or do not qualify for.

    “One of the things that so often happens with disability policy is that something that benefits one group of disabled people may in fact disadvantage or at least not benefit another group of disabled people,” said McColl.

    McColl said there has been some momentum in political action for people with disabilities, but there’s still more to do.

    She pointed to a number of recent initiatives, including the Accessible Canada Act, which came into effect in 2019 and the Disability Inclusion Action Plan, though it was shelved thanks to the election call.

    The Disability Inclusion Action Plan includes a proposed national disability benefit, which would establish a monthly payment to people whose disabilities have prevented them from working and earning income to their fullest potential.

    What Is A Disability

    Under the provisions for VRS disability retirement, a disability may be:

    • The result of a physical illness or injury or a cognitive condition. A cognitive disability is a loss or deterioration in intellectual capacity, such as Alzheimers disease.

    • Non-work related or work-related. A work-related disability is the result of an occupational illness or injury that occurs on the job and the cause is determined to be compensable under the Virginia Workers Compensation Act. A non-work-related disability is the result of an illness or injury that is not compensable under the Virginia Workers Compensation Act.

    • A chronic condition, such as diabetes or mental illness, that worsens to the point that you no longer can perform your job duties.

    Any condition that existed before you were employed in a covered position must substantially worsen for you to be considered for disability retirement.

    Register For Sdi Online

    Log in to BPO, then select SDI Online. You will be directed to your SDI Online Registration Options.

    You will be assigned an EDD Customer Account Number once you complete the registration process. You will also receive a registration confirmation by email and mail.

    To file your claim online, follow these steps:

  • Log in to your BPO account.
  • Select SDI Online.
  • Select Disability Insurance and follow the steps in each section.
  • Submit the completed Part A â Claimantâs Statement.

    Three Military Retirement Categories

    The three basic retirement categories for military members include:

    • Active component military retirement
    • Reserve component military retirement
    • Disability retirement

    For this article, we focus exclusively on medical disability retirement but there are some common issues for retirees in general. For exampleretirement eligibility. All military retirees must meet the DoD-specified criteria that is applicable in their retirement category:

    Active component retirementavailable to those who have completed 20 years of military service. Retirement pay in this case begins after the military members final out processing.

    Reserve component retirementthis pay is offered after 20 years of military service, but is based on a points system which can include points for the following:

    • 1 point for each day of active service
    • 1 point for each attendance at a drill period
    • 1 point for each day of performing funeral honors duty
    • 15 points for each year of membership in a reserve component

    There are other ways of calculating retirement points for reserve members, the above is not the only method. In any case, Reserve retirement pay does not become effective until the veteran is 60 years old.

    Whether You Meet A Disability Listing

    The SSA outlines a number of conditions that, if all the criteria are met, are eligible for automatic approval. These conditions are known as “listings.” If your doctor thinks that your condition qualifies for automatic approval under a listing, the doctor should complete a listing form that explains his or her opinion and provide the appropriate medical documentation. Here is an example.

    The claimant was diagnosed with skin cancer, specifically sarcoma. Sarcoma of the skin is eligible for automatic approval for benefits under the disability listing for cancers if the cancer has spread to, or beyond, the regional lymph nodes. A biopsy revealed that the claimant’s cancer had spread. To prove she met the listing requirements for sarcoma of the skin, the claimant provided the following information from her doctor.

    • The pathology report that initially diagnosed the claimant with sarcoma of the skin.
    • A surgical and pathology report that established that the sarcoma cells had spread to her lymph nodes.
