Why Is Veterans Day On November 11 What You Should Know About The Federal Holiday

The origins of the holiday can be traced back to World War I, according to AccuWeather.

Instead of falling on a Sunday or Monday, Veterans Day is consistently recognized on the 11th of November.

Why the 11th?

This particular date recognizes the Armistice of 11 November 1918, the formal agreement that marked the official end of World War I.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, allied forces and Germany came together to sign the peace treaty, according to AccuWeather.

For years, Americans called Nov. 11 Armistice Day until it was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

Veterans Day is one of 10 of the United States’ federal holidays, meaning nonessential government offices, like the post office, are closed. While banks are not required to close on federal holidays, most branches will likely give staff the day off.

While Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day all celebrate members of the U.S. military, each holiday has its differences.

Veterans Day gives the country an opportunity to thank those who have previously served in the U.S. military, and Memorial Day honors military members who died in service.

Armed Forces Day, celebrated in May, recognizes those currently serving in the U.S. military.

It also distributes the winning design to VA facilities, military installations around the world, and across cities and towns in our nation. It then serves as the cover of the official program for the Veterans Day Observance at Arlington National Cemetery.

Over the years these posters have illustrated the rich history of our countrys service men and women. The poster reflects our pride and patriotism in saluting Veterans while providing the thematic artistry for the year.

The theme for Veterans Day 2022 is Honor. Veterans are proud of their military service in defending our Nation. Honor reflects the military value and tradition of answering the call to duty. There is distinct honor in serving to protect our way of life and the Constitution of the United States of America. We encourage artists to consider Veteran history of service to our Nation and the honor we owe them for fulfilling patriotic duties.

Facts About Veterans Day:

  • Until 1954, Veterans Day was known as Armistice Day. While Armistice Day was principally celebrated to honor the heroes from World War I, the change of name brought about a more inclusive day to celebrate since Veterans Day honors all of those involved and affected by war.
  • It was former US President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a US Army general, who instigated that Veterans Day replaces Armistice Day.
  • World War II saw the highest number of US Military personnel fight for their country with over 16 million deployed. Thats over 3 times the amount of WWI.
  • Veterans Day is often misspelled as Veterans Day. Since the holiday doesnt belong to just one Veteran as it is inclusive and celebrates all Veterans, its Veterans Day.
  • Did you know, that Veterans Day is one of the three military holidays, alongside Memorial Day and Independence Day?
  • Memorial Day is not another name for Veterans Day, its a different day entirely. Memorial Day honors those specifically who have died in the line of duty.
  • Veterans Day honors all US Armed Forces departments, including the US Army, US Air Force, US Marine Corps, US Navy, US Coast Guard, and most recently, US Space Force.

From Armistice Day To Veterans Day

American effort during World War II saw the greatest mobilization of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force in the nations history some 5.7 million more served in the Korean War.

In 1954, after lobbying efforts by veterans service organizations, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the 1938 act that had made Armistice Day a holiday, striking the word Armistice in favor of Veterans. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation on June 1, 1954. From then on, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

The next development in the story of Veterans Day unfolded in 1968, when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which sought to ensure three-day weekends for federal employeesand encourage tourism and travelby celebrating four national holidays on Mondays.

The observation of Veterans Day was set as the fourth Monday in October. The first Veterans Day under the new law was Monday, October 25, 1971 confusion ensued, as many states disapproved of this change, and continued to observe the holiday on its original date.

Is Veterans Day A Federal Holiday

Russia Falls Back Everywhere! Ukraine Daily Update 28 Sept 2022

Veterans Day is a federal holiday, a bank holiday and, in most states, a state holiday. That means that federal employees, including military members, are typically given the day off and, in most states, state workers are as well.

Whether Veterans Day is taken as a work holiday by companies is a business decision. Many companies choose to take off either Veterans Day or Columbus Day, which falls in October, but not both.

Does Veterans Day Have An Apostrophe

Veterans Day is often incorrectly written as Veterans Day or Veterans Day. But, in fact, its apostrophe free.

Veterans Day would definitely be incorrect because it would mean a day for only one veteran. Also, a person may know any number of veterans, which means this day cant use an apostrophe the way Mothers Day and Fathers Day do. These holidays emphasize that a person can dedicate the day to their own parent.

While Veterans Day does encompass multiple veterans, that spelling is incorrect according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. In fact, the department specifically mentions an aversion to the apostrophe being used to make a possessive noun the department says that the holiday doesnt belong to veterans but is about celebrating and honoring all of them. In the name of the holiday, the word veterans acts as an attributive noun, which means that it behaves like an adjective even though it is a noun.

We use attributive nouns all the time without realizing it. For example, if you said Last week, I went to the Cowboys game, it is not grammatically imperative to include an apostrophe at the end of Cowboys, because Cowboys acts as an attributive noun.

Why Is This Apostrophe So Tricky

In modern English, we use s to signify possession. Instead of saying, That is the house of Jack, with s you only have to say, That is Jacks house. Many people probably put that apostrophe in Veterans Day because they feel the day metaphorically belongs to veterans in the same sense that Presidents Day belongs to former presidents.

Apostrophes can also be used to form contractions, such as shortening the phrase is not to the single word isnt.
