Accommodating Individuals With A Disability

Federal agencies are required by law to provide reasonable accommodations to qualified applicants and employees with disabilities, unless doing so will result in undue hardship to the agency. The accommodations make it easier for an employee with a disability to successfully perform the duties of the position. For example, an agency may offer:

  • Interpreters, readers or other personal assistance
  • Modified position duties
  • Flexible work schedules or work sites
  • Accessible technology or other workplace adaptive equipment

You can request reasonable accommodations any time during the hiring process or at any time while on the job. Requests are considered on a case-by-case basis.

To request a reasonable accommodation:

  • Look at the job posting for instructions on requesting a reasonable accommodation.
  • Work directly with the person arranging the interviews.
  • Contact the agency SPPC.

Choose the right jobs for people with disabilities.

While many companies have made it a priority to offer jobs for people with disabilities, these job seekers face a unique set of challenges that can make the search and interview process more difficult.

“Even if you’re highly qualified for a job, you might be self-conscious about your disability,” says Jonathan Kaufman, a career coach and psychotherapist who focuses on disability issues. “There’s a huge psychological component at play.” Born with cerebral palsy, Kaufman was also a former policy advisor to the White House on diversity and disability.

If you worry whether prospective employers will question your ability to perform well on the job, know that you’re not alone. “There is still a significant level of stigma surrounding people with disabilities in the workplace,” says Rebecca Cokley, disability rights program officer at the Ford Foundation and former director of the Disability Justice Initiative at the Center for American Progress.

The good news is that more and more companies have pledged to widen their diversity hiring to include people with disabilities. For example, Microsoft, SAP, and Walgreens have programs in place to offer jobs for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Does Social Security Make Exceptions To The Sga Limit

Some argue that the monthly SGA earnings limit is an arbitrary amount with no real basis and is unfair, and to some extent that’s true. For instance, someone making the federal minimum wage can work 32 hours per week and have their earnings come under the SGA amount, while someone who makes significantly more can work only five hours per week without becoming ineligible for benefits.

In actuality, Social Security can look at things that affect the true “worth” of your work. If the value of your work is more or less than the dollar amount earned, Social Security might take this into account when it determines whether you’re doing SGA-level work activity.

Social Security claims representatives will investigate whether an individual is performing work activity that is actually worth what they are being paid. They will consider the fact that some employers will subsidize disabled employees’ work by paying them their full wage even though the employees are not performing up to the value of that wage because of their disability. For instance, if an employer considers an employee’s work to be worth half of the actual pay, then Social Security could just count half the amount of earnings toward the SGA determination.

    Take Advantage Of Resources

There are a number of disability advocacy and support groups that offer free job training and job-placement assistance.

Ryan recommends the Job Accommodation Network , a service provided by the United States Department of Labor that offers advice on workplace accommodations for a wide range of disabilities. There’s also the Workforce Recruitment Program , a recruitment and referral program that connects federal sector employers nationwide to job seekers with disabilities.

Attending networking events that offer jobs for people with disabilities can play an important part in helping you find companies that have excellent facilities and support systems already in place. Don’t hesitate to put yourself out there.
