How Can I Check My Social Security Disability Claim Status?

If youve applied for VA disability benefits or have filed an appeal, its understandable to feel impatient. The VA is known to be slow at approving claims, and its not uncommon for cases to take several years to resolve. However, you can easily check the status of your VA disability claim at any given time.

Apply For Benefits Online

You should apply for disability benefits as soon as you become disabled. Follow these easy steps to apply online for disability:

  • To start your application, go to our Apply for Benefits page, and read and agree to the Terms of Service. Click Next.
  • On that page, review the Getting Ready section to make sure you have the information you need to apply.
  • Select Start A New Application.
  • We will ask a few questions about who is filling out the application.
  • You will then sign into your mySocial Security account, or you will be prompted to create one.
  • Complete the application.

You can use the online application to apply for disability benefits if you:

  • Are age 18 or older.
  • Are not currently receiving benefits on your own Social Security record.
  • Are unable to work because of a medical condition that is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death and
  • Have not been denied for disability in the last 60 days.
  • Note: If your application was recently denied, our application is a starting point to request a review of the determination we made.

You may be able to file online for SSI at the same time that you file for SSDI benefits. Once you complete the online process above, a Social Security representative will contact you if we need additional information.

Getting Notified Of A Benefits Decision

If a decision has been reached by the SSA, checking your claims status online will provide this information much faster.

You will also receive notification of a benefits decision by getting an official letter from the SSA detailing the reason why your claim was approved or denied. An SSA representative may even call you in certain cases. You can also check your bank account every few days to see if a deposit has been made.

Why You Should Check The Status Of A Social Security Disability Application

How to Check Your CPP Disability Application Status ...

Now that you know how to check the status of your Social Security disability application, it is important to know why you should do so. You should check on your applications status because:

  • Paperwork may get lost. It is possible that the paperwork for a Social Security disability benefits application was lost. When this happens, the case will not progress, and valuable time may be lost. In some cases, the applicant may even have to prepare and file an entirely new application. This occurs when the Social Security Administration determines that the appeal deadline was missed, even if that missed deadline was the fault of the SSA itself.
  • The Social Security Administration may fail to notify you that your claim has been denied. Applicants have only 65 days from the date on which the denial was issued to file an appeal. Naturally, it is extremely difficult to comply with this deadline if you are not aware that your claim was denied.
  • Contacting your claims examiner at the Disability Determination Services to inquire about the status of your case could potentially speed the matter along.

Leveling The Application Process

The Social Security Administration is overwhelmed with a backlog of applications and the process can take an unnecessarily long time. It is important to check with the SSA and ask if anything else is needed. When paperwork or a medical document is missing, this can cause further delays. This is one of the many reasons why securing legal help from our office to represent you is beneficial to your case. From the initial filing with our experience, we can make sure that everything is in order from the start.

When you check on the status of your claim, you can also ask when you can expect a decision. Again, many people find dealing with a government office frustrating and would rather have a professional deal with all the communication to the SSA. With the people working in the SSA buried under a huge backlog of applications, the response tends to be non-personal and they do, in fact, deny most of the claims that come in. Because of our experience in this field, we know how to get results.

What You See When You Check The Status Of Your Ssdi/ssi Claim

  • The number for the application
  • Whether an online appeal is submitted
  • The date of the application and/or appeal
