‘ssi Just Provides A Bare

Managing money for the 8 million beneficiaries who rely on SSI benefits can be difficult. That’s because they face strict asset and income rules, many of which have not been updated since the program was created in 1972.

Most of the program’s beneficiaries are within 150% of the federal poverty level, according to recent research from the Urban Institute. Because some states may supplement SSI, that may help some beneficiaries get above the federal poverty level, according to Richard Johnson, director of the program on retirement policy at the Urban Institute.

Still, many beneficiaries struggle financially.

“SSI just provides a bare-bones support for older people and people with disabilities,” Johnson said. “It really highlights how little support we provide for the most vulnerable Americans.”

More Help For Children Of Deceased Workers

Some people may not be aware that Social Security provides benefits to children of disabled or deceased workers if they are full-time students.

The legislation would raise the eligibility age for students to collect benefits to 22, provided the individual is a full-time student in college or a vocational school. Currently, the program ends for children of disabled or deceased workers when they turn 19 years old or before that age if they are no longer a full-time student.

The lawmakers say extending this benefit would help ensure that the children of deceased or disabled parents can continue their education beyond high school.

Social Security Bill Would Give Seniors An Extra $2400 A Year Here’s How It Would Work

Seniors and other Social Security recipients in the U.S. are being hit hard by inflation, which has outpaced increases in their benefits this year. Now, some lawmakers have a plan to boost Social Security payments by $2,400 per recipient annually, while also shoring up the program financially.

The Social Security Expansion Act was introduced June 9 by Rep. Peter DeFazio, a Democrat from Oregon, and Senator Bernie Sanders, an Independent from Vermont. The plan comes after the Social Security Administration earlier this month said Americans will stop receiving their full Social Security benefits in roughly 13 years without actions to shore up the program.

Social Security recipients receive one cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, each year, which is based on inflation and is supposed to keep their benefits in line with rising prices. But this year, beneficiaries are seeing their purchasing power wane as inflation overtakes their latest COLA increase of 5.9%. Inflation in May rose 8.6% from a year ago, a four-decade high that pushed up the cost of food, shelter, energy and other staples.

The new bill would seek to lessen the strain on people collecting Social Security by boosting each recipient’s monthly check by $200 an annual increase of $2,400.

Here’s what to know about the Social Security Expansion Act.

Medicare Premiums Shrank Your Social Security Check

You are eligible to enroll in Medicare the year when you turn 65. If you sign up for Medicare Part B, your premiums are deducted from your Social Security benefits. The standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B enrollees is $170.10 for 2022, an increase of $21.60 from $148.50 in 2021. However, its entirely possible that you could end up paying more if you fall into a higher tax bracket.

If you file an individual return and your income was higher than $88,000 but less than $111,000, then you paid $207.90 in 2021. If your income ranged from $111,000 to $138,000, then you paid $297. And if its more than $500,000, then the premium came to $504.90.

And in 2022, single filers with income greater than $91,000 and less than or equal to $114,000 pay $238.10 monthly. If their income is greater than $114,000 and less than or equal to $142,000, they pay $340.20. If it’s between $142,000 and $170,000, the premium is $442.30. For income between $170,000 and $500,000, the premium rises to $544.30. And if its more than $500,000, then the premium comes to $578.30.

If your income has recently dropped, you may appeal to the SSA for a lower premium. The IRS may be providing the SSA with older data that needs to be updated, says James B. Twining, CFP, founder, and CEO of Financial Plan Inc.

For certain high-income earners, Medicare premiums are equivalent to 35%, 50%, 65%, 80%, or even 85% of the total cost of coverage.

Types Of Back Payments

Back payments are paid for the months between the date you applied for disability benefits and the date you were approved for benefits. Due to the number of people that are applying for disability benefits and the time it takes to process your application, there is usually a long delay between your disability application date and approval date. But note that, for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, Social Security has a five-month waiting period, so you’re only eligible to receive back pay for any delay beyond the waiting period .

Those who get SSDI back pay will also get payments for the months between when you became disabled and when you applied for Social Security Disability benefits. These are called retroactive benefits because you can get them even before you applied. These are benefits that you would have received if you had applied for benefits earlier.

However, those payment dates change if the 1st or 3rd of the month falls on a weekend. For instance, Oct. 1 fell on a Saturday this year, so SSI recipients received their October Social Security payments a day early, on Sept. 30, and will receive their SSI payment on Monday, Oct. 3.
