National Health Study For A New Generation Of Us Veterans

VA’s National Health Study for a New Generation of U.S. Veterans is an ongoing study of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans by researchers with VA’s Office of Public Health. More than 20,500 Veterans participated in the study, half of whom were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The study aims to provide insight on the overall health of recent Veterans, to improve VA’s understanding of the health services Veterans need, and to maximize the quality of care VA offers to these Veterans. Among the study’s findings so far have been:

• 41.5 percent of women and 4 percent of men in the study experienced military sexual trauma while in the military
• 15.7 percent of Veterans deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan screened positive for PTSD, compared to 10.9 percent of non-deployed Veterans. Overall, 13.5 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan era Veterans screened positive
• 29 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans were more likely to report having sinusitis compared to Veterans who were deployed elsewhere and
• 15.8 percent of women and 13.8 percent of men reported that they had experienced infertility.

Researchers are continuing to analyze data from the study.

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America , is a nonprofit 501 veterans organization founded by Paul Rieckhoff, an American writer, social entrepreneur, advocate, activist and veteran of the United States Army and the Iraq War. He served as an Army First Lieutenant and infantry rifle platoon leader in Iraq from 2003 through 2004. Rieckhoff was released from the Army National Guard in 2007.

Social And Community Involvement

IAVA membership is exclusive to post 9/11 veterans. Social media platforms are essential to IAVA because the organization understands that this is where the youngest veteran generation is most active. Social media connects members of IAVA to work together and advocate for beneficial change.

Storm the Hill is an event unique to IAVA. It offers members the opportunity to directly influence policies they are passionate about. This is a wonderful example of IAVAs membership and advocacy work in action. Storm the Hill is IAVAs leadership developmental program. It gives members the chance to sit down with lawmakers, share their experiences and discuss what matters most. IAVA Storms the Hill because they bring the collective stories of more than 4 million post-9/11 veterans to leaders in Washington. IAVA Stormers interact with members of Congress and fellow veteran leaders.

IAVAs Storm the Hill efforts have fought for better body armor and funding for VA health care, addressed slowdowns in veterans receiving VA care and helped protect and enhance the post-9/11 GI Bill. Storm the Hill has also helped with the passage of the Clay Hunt SAV Act to help reduce veteran suicides by creating opportunities for better mental health care.

Water Purity And Availability

The New York City drinking water supply is extracted from the protected . As a result of the watershed’s integrity and undisturbed natural system, New York is one of only four major cities in the United States the majority of whose drinking water is pure enough not to require purification through plants. The city’s municipal water system is the largest in the United States, moving over one billion gallons of water per day a leak in the Delaware aqueduct results in some 20 million gallons a day being lost under the . The north of the city is undergoing construction of a $3.2 billion water purification plant to augment New York City’s water supply by an estimated 290 million gallons daily, representing a greater than 20% addition to the city’s current availability of water. Since 2001, between 1.9 and 3 million service members have served in post-9/11 war operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and over half of them have deployed more than once. Many times that number of Americans have borne the costs of war as spouses, parents, children, and friends cope with their loved ones absence, mourn their deaths, or greet the changed person who often returns.

Many Iraq and Afghanistan veterans face a life of disability due to the physical and psychological injuries they sustain in the war zones. Over 1.8 million veterans have some degree of officially recognized disability as a result of the wars veterans of the current wars account for more than half of the severely disabled veteran population. Many additional veterans live with physical and emotional scars despite lack of disability status or outstanding claims.

When service members return home injured, it is often their families who provide care even when veterans are housed in military hospitals. The offloading of care for the war wounded onto families and community organizations has been an express part of military planning, and should count among the costs of war.
