Interested In Workforce Training/credentialing
The Veterans Career Transition Program , operated by the IVMF at Syracuse University, is delivered at no cost to post-9/11 veterans, their spouses, and spouses of active duty military. Paid for in entirety by a grant from JPMorgan Chase & Co, VCTP offers solutions to servicemembers transitioning out of the military into careers in civilian business/industry, government and more.
Onward to Opportunity Offered by the IVMF on U.S. military installations across the country, O2O provides in-demand, industry-validated training to transitioning servicemembers, all Guard and Reserve, and active duty spouses who are navigating the transition to civilian employment.

Today’s episode is another installment of Home Base Nation: Veteran Stories with Retired U.S. Army Sgt. Monica “Mo” Southall. Mo participated in Home Base’s Intensive Care Program in January 2022. Mo is an athlete and adaptive sports athlete, having competed multiple times in the Invictus Games, and competed and coached in the Department of Defense Warrior Games. Mo was gravely injured in 2009 while on deployment, and speaks openly about how finding her way into adaptive sports saved her life. In this conversation, Mo and Ron talk about her time in the Army and her love of service, into the world of adaptive sports, what it was like to be a gay woman during the time of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, what led her to Home Base, and why she feels it is so important to talk about mental health care and struggles, and why it is okay to ask for help.

The collection and use of Z-codes have been slow to gain traction, but more and more states are starting to require the collection of these “social diagnoses” as part of payment efforts for social services. Collecting Z codes doesn’t have to be difficult, and doesn’t even require a clinician to document! There is a big opportunity for community based organizations to help with the screening and documentation of Z codes, especially when they have tools that make it simple for them to collect this information. At Unite Us we are helping the market to find simple ways to capture actionable Z codes, and are eager to help health plans, health systems, and hospitals put these types of codes to good use!

The Institute for Veterans and Military Families is an interdisciplinary research institution that informs and advances the policy, economic and wellness concerns of the Americas veterans and families. It is housed in the National Veterans Resource Center at Syracuse University. The IVMF annually serves thousands of U.S. veterans, service members, and their families around the world and as of 2019, the Institute had served 100,000 military service members, veterans, and their families through their programs.

National Veterans Resource Center
The IVMF is housed in the National Veterans Resource Center at the Daniel & Gayle DAniello building. The building was designed by SHoP Architects in 2016, and the construction finished in spring 2020. The $64 million facility was funded entirely with philanthropic gifts. A $20 million gift was announced in 2018 by SU trustee Daniel DAniello, ’68, and his wife Gayle to support the construction of the National Veterans Resource Center .The IVMF received $14.5 million from the Upstate Revitalization Initiative.
The four-story, 126,000-square-foot complex has space for a variety of veteran-related organizations and houses a 750-seat auditorium, a cafe, a gallery, a research center, and a banquet hall that turns into a lounge/study area. The facility serves Regional Student Veteran Resource Center, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs “Vet-Success on Campus”, the National Center of Excellence for Veteran Business Ownership, Veteran Business Outreach Center and Accelerator, and Syracuse Universitys Office of Veteran and Military Affairs, and offices for the Army and Air Force ROTC.

SEATTLE, WA â Today, the Schultz Family Foundation announced a $7.5 million investment to the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University to advance the Onward to Opportunity program in support of veteran career preparation and employment.
Each year, approximately 250,000 veterans and their families transition from the military to civilian life. While returning service members have diverse skills demanded by todayâs civilian labor force, including tenacious work ethics, tested leadership, and strategic problem-solving abilities, these transitions too often leave veterans struggling to best align the experience acquired during military careers with the civilian workplace.
Todayâs grant announcement coincides with the release of, âA Case for Patient Philanthropy: Supporting Jobs and Careers for Military-Connected Americans,â which details the rationale and impact of the O2O program. Funded through a grant from the Schultz Family Foundation, the white paper details the costs and consequences associated with a failed or sub-optimal employment transition for the service member, his or her family, and society.

Research On Veterans In Military Records
There is no simple explanation for how to begin research on veterans. Your path will depend on whether your research is personal, genealogical or historical in nature and on aspects of the veteran’s service such as: which branch of service, which conflict, what dates, whether Regular Army or a volunteer unit, whether they were an officer or enlisted personnel, and whether there was a pension application.
Research in Military Service Records Military service records are the primary source of information on individual veterans. These include Official Military Personnel Files for recent veterans, and compiled service records and pension files for older veterans.

Five years after cofounding the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University, JPMorgan Chase & Co. and the university announced today a renewed $13.8 million commitment through 2020 to support the Institutes mission of advancing the post-service lives of Americas service members, Veterans and their families. Since its founding, Veterans and military spouses across the country, and around the world, have benefited from the IVMFs innovative programs, research, policy analysis, and program evaluation. JPMorgan Chase remains the Institutes largest corporate contributor. Over the coming months, Chase will begin piloting seven new digital enhancements to make banking even more convenient.

For many, this can be a challenging time, marked by questions about what the next phase of life holds, issues related to finding and establishing a new career, as well as securing needed resources and support for a successful transition.
The Institute for Veterans and Military Families , which was founded at Syracuse University in 2011, is committed to advancing the lives of these veterans and their families. The IVMF offers career skills programs that provide career training, entrepreneurship education, professional certifications, and job placement support all at no cost to the service member, veteran or family member. It also conducts national research, policy analysis and program evaluation, and works with communities and nonprofits across the nation to enhance service delivery for veterans and their families.
The institute also uses SAS advanced analytics to drive its programs and operations, enabling the organization to gain greater insights on performance and impact on those it serves.

Military records can be valuable resources in personal and genealogical research. We are the official repository for records of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard and other government agencies. These records include:

This week is National Veteran Small Business Week. In different circles you will hear the parallel drawn between small business success and the backbone of the United States economy.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration there are 28.8 million small businesses which account for 99.7 percent of all U.S. businesses. These small businesses employ more than 56 million people, about half of the U.S. workforce. Another backbone of this country is Veterans and their families. There would be no life, liberty or the pursuit of happiness without them. We became the land of the free because of the brave.
Veterans have a long history of being entrepreneurs and building both literally and figuratively main streets across the nation with their businesses. After WWII, 45 percent of returning Veterans became entrepreneurs as part of their transition, and while that number has drastically declined today, they are still doing so today with10 percent or 2.5 million of U.S. small businesses are owned by Veterans
These businesses employ 5.5-million people and bring in $1.2 trillion in revenue. Interestingly, many well-known brands are companies founded by Veterans Nike was co-founded by Army Veteran Bill Bowerman Walmart, was co-founded by Army Veteran Sam Walton GoDaddy and FedEx were founded by Marines, Bob Parsons and Fred Smith respectively and newcomers Plated.com, who are quickly becoming a household name, was founded by Nick Taranto, a USMC Veteran.
