How to turn off burglar alarm & decommission

Alarm bell-box battery: if you have a sounder outside your home, it will have a backup battery. Note that the alarm panel battery often causes the greatest issues with burglar alarms, and that it should be changed every four years otherwise, it might cause issues with the rest of the alarm system.

What Happens When Your Security Alarm System Goes Off When Youre Out

If your security alarm goes off when youre at home, it can be a rude wakeup call – but thats the whole point. The alarm in your home security system is designed to be a deterrent to intruders, as well as alert occupants and draw attention to your home, whether that be from neighbours, passers-by or authorities. Systems will sound for about 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the system, before stopping and automatically re-arming. If a sensor is triggered again the alarm siren will sound for another period, and this will continue indefinitely.

How an alarm is responded to will differ slightly for individual security systems and whether you have professionally monitored or self-monitored alarm. If you are home when your alarm sounds, it is easy to let the relevant people know if it is a false alarm or not and get back to your day. But what about when youre not home or out of town? What happens then?

Ways To Stop A False Alarm

To ensure you dont have any false alarms either while youre home or if youre out, there are a few different things to keep on top of.

Quality of system

When you are completing your research to get a home security alarm or upgrade your current system, ensure you are choosing a high quality system . The difference between an average alarm and a high quality system are huge, and choosing the latter can mean less false alarms all year round.

Installation

Once you have chosen your home alarm system, ensure you are enlisting the services of a professional and reputable security company to install your alarm system correctly. If your system isnt installed correctly, this can result in your alarm not working like it should with a potential for more false alarms.

Alarm system servicing and maintenance

The regular servicing and maintenance of your system can ensure it lives a long, happy life and causes you minimal issues whilst still optimally doing its job. People often overlook the need to service and maintain their home alarm systems, but it is a big part of ensuring they can protect you when you need it most. Although a lot of false alarms are caused by human error, faulty technology can be a cause which can generally be avoided through regular maintenance.

Disconnect The Alarm System Battery

Once the panel is open, locate the back-up battery. Forstandard alarm systems, this will be a brick-like unit resting in thebottom of the enclosure. Remove one of the leads from the battery bywiggling the connector from side to side while pulling.

For all-in-one panels, the battery can usually be unplugged where it connects to the main circuit board.

Ifyou werent able to find or remove the low-voltage transformer earlier,it can be disconnected now. At one end of the row of screw terminals, look for two screws marked AC, Power, or XFMR. Any of these termsrefers to the transformer connection.

Use a screwdriver to loosen one of these screws, then pull the wire away from it. It doesn’t matter which wire you remove disconnecting either one will break the circuit and kill the AC power to the panel.

Also, the color of the wires doesn’t matter. Unlike the battery, AC has no polarity, so your AC wires may be red and black, green and yellow, white and white, etc. If you later decide to reconnect the wires, it doesn’t matter which wire goes to which terminal if you accidentally reverse them, all will still work just fine.

This is low voltage, so there is no danger from electrical shock. However, dont allow this wire to come incontact with other wires, the circuit board, alarm enclosure, or anything else metal, oryou could short out and blow the internal fuse in the transformer.

Move the wire well out of the way, or evenbetter, wrap the bare wire with electrical tape.

7 Ways to Hide Security Cameras (Indoors and Outdoors)

Disarming a home alarm without a code is not always possible. It is also based on the security system and console you have in your home. Before taking steps to manually disarm your alarm, it is important to understand that you may be financially liable for any damage or problems that arise during the process if a professional service technician is not available to help assist you from your security company. Some of the most common steps to take when disarming a home alarm include:

  • Locate the main access panel of your home alarm system. Its often located in a garage, utility room, or washroom .

  • Remove the AC power to the home alarm console from the wall directly.

  • Use your consoles access key to unlock and open the systems backing.

  • Lastly, disconnect at least one of the wires that are attached to the systems main battery, which is blocky and noticeable in most units.

In spy movies, wireless-signal jamming is often depicted as a way to disable cell phones and other communications devices. In the real world, it can also be used to disable wireless home security systems.

To do this, a burglar blocks the signals from door/window or motion sensors to enter a home without triggering the alarm. This type of hack gained a lot of attention a few years ago when a YouTuber demonstrating how easily he could jam a SimpliSafe wireless home security system.

Because these systems rely on wireless signals, theres always the possibility that they could be hacked, says Justin Brookman, director of consumer privacy and technology policy for CR. And thats true of any wireless device, from a smartphone to a security camera.

But not all security systems are easy to jam. The success of these attacks depends on the system you own and careful planning on the part of a hacker or burglar, which is unlikely.

For detailed information on these test results, see our article on five DIY home security systems that are vulnerable to hacking.

No Phone Line No Signal

This is one almost everyone knows about, whether they have an alarm system or not. We have all seen the movies where the burglar sneaks around outside the house until he comes across the phone line entering the house. He pulls out his snippers, and cuts the line. Then, when he busts open the window or front door, the alarm goes off, but no one can get the signal.

Unlike most things in the movies, this is one that Hollywood got right. Normal alarm systems use the phone line to send out any signals at all, including fire, burglary, and carbon monoxide signals. Without the phone line, nothing is received by the alarm company, and no call goes out to the authorities. Even multiple phone line systems are pretty easy to disable from the outside of the building!

Types Of Alarm Systems

There are several types of alarm systems. In general, all security systems will include a central control unit, one or more entry sensors, and maybe even video cameras and motion detectors. The difference that is most important when considering how alarms are disabled is the way the system is connected and monitored. Generally, all alarm systems will fall into three main categories.

Disabling The Factory Security System On The Honda Accord

Many old Honda Accords were notoriously known for their alarms going off in the middle of the night, even if a small tree branch fell on it and thereby waking everyone else up in the neighborhood. To deal with this challenge, you can either adjust the sensitivity of the alarm or disable it entirely.

To perform this job that would take a maximum of 30 minutes, youll need a Philips head screwdriver, a flat head screwdriver, and a piece of wire.

If you intend to adjust the sensitivity of the alarm, then you can do so with the flathead screwdriver. Just below the dashboard on the drivers side rests the control unit for the security system. Rotating the sensitivity knob between min and max helps select the desired amount of sensitivity.

Youll need to set it to the level where it is neither too sensitive nor too insensitive and the best way to find that perfect spot is to keep rotating it until the point where even the slightest impact doesnt trigger the alarm.

However, setting the sensitivity too low may not activate the alarm, even if someone broke the glass. Be wise and pedantic when setting the right sensitivity.

Why Is My Honda Accord Alarm Going Off At Random

Assuming that the alarm security system is working correctly on your Honda Accord and that the battery and the charging system are perfect, there could be other faults and glitches triggering the alarm.

Firstly, you need to check the hood latch sensor as it can trigger the alarm to go off if it is faulty. To check, you may detach the hood latch sensor and if the alarm goes off randomly, the fault could be found in the connector. A bad sensor can cause false signals to get triggered due to the accumulation of dirt.

Apart from that, you also need to check if theres a short in the wiring. Was the wiring tampered with in the recent past? Was the alarm fitted recently? These clues can often hint at a shoddy wiring job which causes the alarm to go off randomly. A rodent can also harm the wiring harness so you must get the wiring checked by a professional at the auto shop.

If your key fob got damaged or wet recently, it could be sending false signals to the alarm in your Honda Accord, thereby causing the alarm to go off suddenly. If you think that the key fob is the culprit, then it is best to get the problem resolved at the dealership or at an auto shop that fixed the alarm in your car.

How Do Burglars Defeat Alarm Systems

While many of our alarm customers hate to think about the prospect, homes with security systems still get broken into. Ideally, the presence of a home security system encourages potential thieves to look elsewhere for a victim. If not, you would hope the blaring siren and potential police response lessens the damage done during a robbery. However, occasionally burglars defeat alarm systems and carry on their crime just as if no security system were present.

In this post, we wish to share some common ways that burglars defeat alarm systems. Of course, as part of this discussion we also want to share tips on how to overcome these measures. Well start with a couple actions burglars take that disable alarms entirely. From there, well look at how thieves try to escape your alarms detection. Finally, well give some insight into making sure your alarms communication and police response work as quickly as possible. Lets begin with a look at one of the most basic ways that burglars get into homes with security systems: breaking in during a blackout.

Stocking up on backup batteries, such as the Interstate Battery model shown here inside of an Interlogix Concord 4 panel, can keep your alarm running even through extended power outages.

How Can You Be Sure Here Are Some Tips:

How to Turn Off Your Honeywell Alarm System
  • In almost all cases, a security system in alarm will havekeypads beeping or blaring, with lights flashing, and displaying an Alarm, Alarm Memory, or Trouble condition. The main siren,if any, will also sound until it times out, usually programmed for 10minutes or so.
  • Smoke detectors that are tied to the alarm systemwill also cause the keypads to beep or show a troublecondition. A beeping noise that doesnt come from akeypad is likely not an alarm problem.
  • 110-voltsmoke alarms and stand-alone battery-powered smokes will often beep fora low back-up battery, but will not cause the keypadsto beep.
  • Fire alarm beeping sounds are notoriously hard to locate, and abeeping smoke detector is often mistaken as being part of the alarmsystem. If you find that a smoke alarm keeps going off, see this page on How to Stop a Beeping Smoke Alarm.

Police Often Just Drive

There are several reasons that police officers are not able to check on a home after an alarm was triggered. These include gated communities or additional security precautions. These limit the accessibility to police officers that cannot legally access properties by force in many situations.

Fix: Include any additional access information in your plan to contact emergency services, including police, fire, and medical services. This could be as simple as having instructions given from your monitoring company to emergency response with necessary access codes or passwords. Remember to update this information when there are any changes.
