The Virginia Employment Commission administers the unemployment compensation program that provides temporary financial assistance to individuals who become unemployed through no fault of their own. Benefits are paid through taxes on employers covered under the Virginia Unemployment Compensation Act. No part of the cost of your unemployment benefits is deducted from your earnings. Your name and social security number will be cross-matched with the Social Security Administration to verify your identity. To receive benefits you must meet each of the following:

Monetary qualification Weekly eligibility requirements

This document explains these requirements and will assist you in filing for benefits. Read it carefully and retain it for your records. Note: If you reside in another state and filed your claim against Virginia, you are subject to Virginias unemployment laws, rules, regulations, and the requirements contained in this document.

The base period is set by law and will not change during the life of your unemployment claim. If you qualify monetarily, your claim remains in effect for one year. This period is called a benefit year.

Classes Have Already Started And I Have Not Received My Va Benefits Will Ku Charge Me A Late Fee Or Cancel My Enrollment Since My Tuition Has Not Been Paid

When you have completed your Using VA Benefits paperwork forms for the semester, you are placed on deferment, giving you/the VA until the end of the semester to pay your tuition and fees.

If you receive a late fee, it most likely means you have not completed your request for the semester. Contact us to confirm you have completed your paperwork for the semester.

Ch. 33 Post-9/11 GI Bill users: Beginning Jan. 2021, your enrollment is first certified to the VA without tuition and fees. A second certification will occur after the add/drop period with your tuition and fees, as now required by law. This means it will take longer for the VA to pay my tuition/fees, but a deferment is placed on your account.

Contact us by Dec. 1/May 1 if you still have charges on your account.

Applying For Disability Benefits

You can apply for Social Security Disability benefits online or in person at your local Social Security office. You will be asked to fill out a number of forms, which you should complete with as much detail as possible, and you may be asked to attend a consultative exam. After completing the disability application process, you will receive a decision from the SSA within two to four months. If you are approved for benefits, this notice will tell you when benefits will begin, which benefits you will be receiving, and how much you will be receiving each month. If you are denied benefits, you have 60 days from the date of denial to appeal the SSAâs decision to deny benefits.

If you do need to pursue a Social Security Disability appeal, do not give up hope. A number of applicants who are denied during the initial stage of the application process go on to successfully receive benefits through the process of an appeal

What If I Dont Have A Bank Account

You can always opt for a prepaid debit card. However, using a bank is safer and more secure. You have no recourse if your prepaid debit card is lost, stolen, or hacked. You have much more transparency and security with a bank account.

We recommend opening a bank account with a military-friendly bank. There are many military-friendly banks that offer free checking and savings accounts, including USAA, Navy Federal Credit Uniton, and Chase Bank. Chase Bank even offers a lucrative sign up bonus for opening a new bank account.

If none of those recommendations work for you, then check out the Veterans Benefits Banking Program , a collaboration with the Association of Military Banks of America and the VA.

Why Social Security Payments Dates Are Important

Social Security benefits are sent out the month after they are due.

This means that Social Security checks are paid in arrears, so any check received is for the month prior.

For example, your March payment is distributed in April.

Furthermore, the Social Security Administration adjusts payments each year to keep pace with inflation.

This is called the Cost of Living Adjustment .

The Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment will see an increase of 1.6% in 2020 and 1.3% in 2021.

Message For Us Citizens: Choose Direct Deposit For Federal Benefits

Message for U.S. CitizensDecember 11, 2019Choose Direct Deposit for Federal Benefits

Each month, the U.S. Embassy in Quito mails out several hundred federal benefits checks, including those from social security, veterans affairs, IRS, and other federal agencies. Unfortunately, the majority of these are returned by Correos del Ecuador, the local mail service, as undeliverable due to incomplete addresses. This process represents a significant waste of government resources. More importantly, it means individuals who should be receiving federal benefits are not receiving them in a timely manner.

Correos del Ecuadors delivery requirements have recently become more stringent. While in the past Correos del Ecuador would attempt to deliver even with a partial address, now they confirm the validity of addresses before accepting checks and reject those that are undeliverable. The Embassy must return all rejected checks to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

To avoid problems with physical checks, the federal government strongly encourages federal benefit recipients to choose direct deposit. Indeed, Federal Regulation 31 CFR Part 208 requires individuals who are physically in the United States to convert federal benefit paper checks to direct deposit in many circumstances. Direct deposit is safer, easier, and more convenient.

    Dependency And Indemnity Compensation

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation and Parents Dependency and Indemnity Compensation is a tax free monetary benefit generally payable to a surviving spouse, child, or parent of Servicemembers who died while on active duty, active duty for training or inactive duty training, or survivors of Veterans who died from their service-connected disabilities. DIC for parents is an income based benefit.

Questions About Adding Or Removing Certain Kinds Of Dependents

If you and your spouse are both Veterans with a combined disability rating of at least 30%, you can both receive additional disability compensation for each other and for your children.

You should know: Itll take us longer to process your claim if your spouse is also a Veteran. But if you file your claim online, and we decide youre eligible for additional disability compensation for your dependent, well pay you back to the date you started the online claim process.

You can submit a request through eBenefits asking us to stop paying additional disability compensation for a spouse or child. Well need more time to process a request that involves a child than a request that involves a spouse, but the online process is still much faster than submitting a paper request.

If you get divorced, youll want to notify us right away. You dont need to send or upload supporting documents to eBenefits in this case.

This will help to make sure we dont continue paying you additional disability compensation for your former spouse and, if applicable, stepchildren after the divorce. If we continue paying you benefits that youre not eligible for, we may withhold money from future payments until youve paid us back.
