Calculating Multiple Va Disability Ratings
The VA uses a special method for calculating multiple disabilities.
Here is a simplified example:
Example: If you have a 30% disability rating, the VA would multiply that against 100%, which is assumed to be good health. This gives you 30%. Subtract that from 100% which leaves you with 70% . Then subtract 70% from 100% and you are left with 30%. If that is your only disability, then your final VA Service-Connected Disability Rating is 30%.
If you have multiple ratings, you continue with the process, using your final number each time as your starting point. Continuing with our example, if your next rating is 10%, you would multiply 10% against 70%, which is 7%. You subtract that from 70%, which leaves you with 63%. Subtract 63% from 100% and you get 37%. Your disability rating is 37%, which rounds up to 40%.

Combined Rating System For Veterans With Multiple Disabilities
Veterans with multiple disabilities use the combined rating system.
To use the combined rating system, arrange the disabilities in order by severity and locate the intersect of the two numbers on the table below.
The VA rounds the final figure to the nearest to 10 percent.
If the Veteran has more than two disabilities, find the combined value for the first two, without rounding, and repeat with the third disability. Once you have a final number, round to the nearest 10%.
For example, if disability 1’s rating is 40% and disability 2’s is 20%, the combined rating is 52%. That figure gets rounded to the nearest 10%, making the disability rating 50%.
For a three-disability example, if disability 1’s rating is 60%, disability 2’s rating is 30%, and disability 3’s rating is 20%, we first find the rating of 1 and 2. The rating of 1 and 2 comes out to be 72. We then take the first combined rating and find the intersect with disability 3. The final number comes out at an even 80% rating.

Increased Disability Payments For Veterans With Dependents
Veterans entitled to compensation who have a disability rated at 30% or more are entitled to additional compensation for dependents. Dependent children between the ages of 18 and 23 must be attending school and a dependent for tax purposes.
Parents may be considered dependents if the veteran provides more than 50% of their support. Veterans with a disabled spouse may also be eligible for increased benefits. Check with the VA for details.

How To Obtain A 100% Va Disability Rating
VA disability ratings are expressed in percentages ranging from 0% to 100% in 10% increments. A 0% rating means that a disability is service connected but does not cause enough of an impairment to qualify for cash benefits. A 100% rating means that you are severely impaired in your ability to work, maintain relationships with loved ones, and perform self-care tasks such as bathing or eating without assistance.

Va Disability Ratings Are Subject To Review And Not Always Permanent
The Department of Veterans Affairs reserves the right to change VA disability rating schedules, screening requirements and revisit VA awards to see if the condition has improved or worsened over time.
You may receive a letter from the VA instructing you to participate in a re-examination. You may also notify the VA when you wish to have your claim reviewed again. Do this if you feel your condition is not improving or getting worse.
Do not skip the re-examination process. Doing so may subject you to a more arbitrary decision from the VA.

What Are 2021 Va Disability Rates
Based upon the September 2020 report on inflation from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the Social Security Administration announced that there would be a cost of living adjustment to VA disability compensation for 2021.
VA disability rates 2021 were released on October 13, 2020. The new 2021 VA disability rates were effective December 1, 2020, and disabled veterans saw the new increase starting with January 1, 2021 VA compensation payments.
The COLA increase of 1.3% was small this time around, due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the low inflation rate.
For example, if you were previously receiving $1,000 per month tax-free, a 1.3% pay increase is $13, so your compensation pay in 2021 would go up to $1,013 per month.
What Is The Difference Between Unemployability And A 100% Disability Rating
The monthly compensation amount for unemployability is equal to that of a 100% disability rating. However, the qualifying criteria for unemployability is different than the requirements for a 100% disability rating.
An unemployability rating does not solely rely on the rating of a specific condition to grant benefits, it takes into account a veterans ability to work. Unemployability allows a veteran who is unable to work, to receive compensation at the 100% level even though their service-connected condition does not meet the 100% rating criteria. On the other hand, with a 100% disability rating, there are not the same restrictions on work activity as with unemployability. Therefore, if a veteran is rated 100% for their service-connected disability, and they are able to work, then they may do so.

Increasing 90% Va Disability Rating To 100% Rating
Because there is such a substantial difference between the 90 percent VA disability pay and the 100 percent pay, over $1,300 a month in most cases, veterans are motivated to get to the 100 percent rating. Unfortunately, this is very difficult to do. Even with a disability rating of 90 percent for one disability and 94 percent for the other, the combined disability ratings table would only award 99 percent.
The best way to increase your 90 percent rating to a 100 percent rating is to appeal the decision. Because you stand to gain over $1,300 a month in additional veterans benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs if you are approved, this is a worthwhile endeavor. However, you will want to enlist the help of a VA benefits attorney to ensure you go through the appeals process correctly.
That said, even with an appeal, getting to 100 percent is hard using the combined disability ratings procedures. A better option is to consider Total Disability Individual Unemployability or TDIU.

Yes. TDIU benefits are not necessarily permanent. What Do I Need To Know About The Va And Social Security Programs
Both Social Security and VA pay disability benefits. However, their programs, processes, and criteria for receiving benefits are very different.

How Much Is The Average Va Disability Check
How much is VA disability paying out on average? To understand that figure, its helpful to know a few statistics about the veteran population.
As of fiscal year 2018, there were 19,602,316 veterans eligible to receive a disability rating through the VA. Of those more than 19 million eligible veterans, only 4,743,108 are receiving disability compensation benefits and have a combined disability rating of at least 0%.
That means that 75.8% of eligible veterans are not receiving disability benefits through the VA for one reason or another.

How Much Is Va Disability Pay
How much in additional compensation you will receive also depends on your disability rating and the number of dependents you have.
Veterans with disability ratings of at least 30 percent are eligible for additional allowances for dependents.

Percent Schedular Disability Ratings
There are two ways in which you can receive a schedular 100 percent disability rating: you have a 100 percent rating based on one disability alone or you receive a combined disability rating of 100 percent, meaning the combination of all of your disability ratings for each service-connected condition is 100 percent. However, it is important to note that disability ratings are not added together in the traditional way. Instead, VA uses its own form of math when combining disability ratings. To avoid doing VA math by hand, use the VA math calculator found on our website. Importantly, VA does round up. Therefore, if the VA math calculator produces an outcome of 75 percent, it means you are likely entitled to an 80 percent combined disability rating. On the other hand, if the VA math calculator produces an outcome of 73 percent, then you are only entitled to a 70 percent combined disability rating.
