The disease is caused by damage to the myelin sheath, the protective covering that surrounds nerve cells. Symptoms which come and go, often lasting for days, weeks, or months include loss of balance and coordination, weakness, difficulty walking or moving, numbness, decreased attention span and reasoning problems. MS can also affect a persons bowel and bladder system causing incontinence and constipation.

If your disability is listed in Social Security’s Listing of Impairments, the first step is to get a diagnosis of the condition from your doctor. But a mere diagnosis will get you an automatic disability approval for only a few conditions, like the following:
- ALS
- organ transplants, such as a liver or kidney transplant
- certain serious cancers, such as esophageal cancer, mucosal melanoma, anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid gland, or small-cell carcinoma .

You must also be considered disabled to be eligible for SSDI benefits. The Social Security Administration determines disability by the following requirements:

Applying For Disability Benefits
You can apply for Social Security Disability benefits online or in person at your local Social Security office. You will be asked to fill out a number of forms, which you should complete with as much detail as possible, and you may be asked to attend a consultative exam. After completing the disability application process, you will receive a decision from the SSA within two to four months. If you are approved for benefits, this notice will tell you when benefits will begin, which benefits you will be receiving, and how much you will be receiving each month. If you are denied benefits, you have 60 days from the date of denial to appeal the SSA’s decision to deny benefits.

The SSA could find you disabled if you are unable to work on a regular basis for a 40-hour workweek. As such, your doctor should discuss whether fatigue or pain would cause you to miss any days of work in a typical month, and how many days of work you would miss. For example, your doctor could verify whether you experience ongoing flare-ups of pain from your back impairment, the pain cannot be effectively controlled by medication, and the level of pain is so severe that it prevents you from performing work activities for at least three days a month.

When you qualify for Social Security disability benefits, your children may also qualify to receive benefits on your record. Your eligible child can be your biological child, adopted child, or stepchild. A dependent grandchild may also qualify.
