Service Connected Disability Explained

The Department of Veterans Affairs official site describes VA Disability Compensation as a benefit paid to qualifying veterans disabilities that are the result of a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service.

VA rules also allow for compensation for post-service disabilities that are considered related or secondary to disabilities occurring in service and for disabilities presumed to be related to circumstances of military service even in cases where such issues are not discovered until after the veteran has retired or separated from the military.

Depending on the nature and severity of the conditions evaluated by the Department of Veterans Affairs, you may be entitled to a monthly payment based on the VA disability percentage rating assigned to your condition.

Some medical conditions can only warrant a 10% rating , while others may be rated as much as 50% or higher depending on the condition. Servicemembers with dependents may receive additional consideration for higher VA disability payments.

How Your Ssdi Payments Are Calculated

The severity of your disability will not affect the amount of SSDI benefits you receive. The Social Security Administration will determine your payment based on your lifetime average earnings before you became disabled. Your benefit amount will be calculated using your covered earnings. These are your earnings at jobs where your employer took money out of your wages for Social Security or FICA.

Your SSDI monthly benefit will be based on your average covered earnings over a period of time, which is referred to as your average indexed monthly earnings . The SSA uses these amounts in a formula to determine your primary insurance amount . This is the basic amount used to establish your benefit.

SSDI payments range on average between $800 and $1,800 per month. The maximum benefit you could receive in 2020 is $3,011 per month. The SSA has an online benefits calculator that you can use to obtain an estimate of your monthly benefits.

A healthy workplace can be described as one where workers and managers actively contribute to the working environment by promoting and protecting the health, safety and well-being of all employees. An academic report from 2014 suggests that interventions should take a 3-pronged approach:

    • Promote mental health by developing the positive aspects of work and the strengths of employees.
    • Address mental health problems regardless of cause.

    What Is Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that is characterized by unusual shifts in mood, energy and activity levels. People who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder often have varying abilities to carry out daily tasks. Bipolar disorder involves clear changes in mood, from manic, highly energized periods to more depressed, sad times.

There are four primary types of bipolar disorder. They include:

    1. Bipolar I Disorder: the most severe type of bipolar disorder, this type includes manic episodes that last for at least seven days or that are so severe that they require hospitalization. Depressive episodes usually last for at least two weeks.

    2. Bipolar II Disorder: this type has both depressive and manic episodes, but with less extreme manic periods.

    3. Cyclothymic Disorder: also known as cyclothymia, this type involves numerous periods of hypomanic symptoms and depressive symptoms for at least two years.

    4. Other Specified and Unspecified Bipolar and Related Disorders: this type involves bipolar symptoms that do not meet the criteria for one of the other diagnoses.

Signs and symptoms of a manic bipolar disorder episode include:

    • Feel very up, high, or elated
    • Have a lot of energy
    • Have increased activity levels
    • Eat too much or too little
    • Feel tired or slowed down
    • Think about death or suicide

Bipolar disorder affects people in different ways. While medication and psychotherapy can help to control the symptoms of bipolar disorder, it may not completely eliminate them.

How Va Disability Ratings And Va Disability Compensation Work

Military members who received injuries, got sick, or developed medical or mental health conditions while serving may be eligible for VA veterans benefits including VA disability compensation.

The Department of Veterans Affairs does not award compensation automatically, a review of the veterans health, medical records, medical history with the claimed condition, and related factors will all play a part in that review.

The veteran is responsible for scheduling a claims appointment. This can be done as part of final out processing, but may also be accomplished within a specified time frame after leaving military service.

Those applying for VA compensation benefits may also be eligible to sign up for VA healthcare benefits and a Veterans Health Identification Card. VA compensation for service connected medical issues is not necessarily tied with VA healthcare benefits, but if you have a VA rated disability you should definitely explore the options open to you under the VA health system.

    Access To Care Is Limited

Beyond the cost of mental health care, access to care is improving but still a big issue.

Access and coverage for mental health and substance abuse treatments have improved in recent years thanks to the 2008 Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which barred health insurers from making coverage for mental health more restrictive than for physical ailments. That law and other legal and regulatory updates helped stop blatant discrimination against behavioral health care.

But there are still a lot of medical and insurance loopholes that exist that make it difficult for patients to get affordable care, says Angela Kimball, National Director of Advocacy and Public Policy at the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

And there are many other factors too, she says.

Mental health and substance use treatment centers and clinics, for instance, tend to be concentrated in urban areas. Rural parts of the country tend to lack access to more specialized treatment options similar to the barriers that exist in traditional physical medicine.

In fact, more than 112 million Americans live in areas where mental health providers are scarce. States like Missouri, Arizona, South Dakota, Montana and Washington are among those with low rates when it comes to meeting the mental health needs of residents. On a national level, research shows that the U.S. is likely to continue to experience a shortage of mental health professionals through 2025.
