You may be eligible for disability benefits if you’re on disability from your service in the Canadian Armed Forces or Merchant Navy.

You may get social assistance payments from:

  • your province or territory
  • your First Nation

These payments will depend on your household income, savings and investments.

You may also be eligible for health-related benefits from your province or territory. These benefits may include benefits that help cover the cost of:

  • medications
  • medical aids or devices

Make It A Priority To Avoid Missing Payments

Whether or not you believe you qualify for student loan forgiveness, it’s important to continue to make your monthly payments on time every month to avoid potential damage to your credit score. Remember that you’ll receive all of your payments back if you qualify for forgiveness, as long as they were made after the effective date of your disability determination.

While you’re at it, monitor your credit regularly to make sure no other issues pop up that could threaten the health of your credit.

How Are Disability Insurance And Supplemental Security Benefits Funded

Disability Insurance is funded by payroll tax contributions from workers and their employers. Workers currently pay a tax of 0.9 percent of their wages up to $113,700, and their employers pay an equal amount. These tax contributions go into the Disability Insurance trust fund. Funding for Supplemental Security comes from the federal income tax and other federal revenues.

The Social Security Administration administers both of these programs. State agencies, usually called disability determination services, make the initial determination of whether applicants meet the disability standard. These state agencies are federally funded and follow federal guidelines.

Do I Qualify For Social Security Disability Benefits

Are you unable to work due to an injury, illness, or mental condition?

Have you been, or do you expect to be, out of work for 12 months or more?

The Social Security Administration uses a 5-Step sequential evaluation when determining eligibility for disability benefits. Any severe medical impairment or combination of impairments that seriously impacts your ability to perform work-related activities on an ongoing and continuous basis may meet the criteria for Social Security Disability benefits.

Disability is defined as an inability to perform any substantial gainful activity. This means you must be so disabled that you cannot perform any type of full-time work activity. This standard begins to relax as you get closer to retirement age eclipsing 50 and 55 years of age.

If you answered yes to the questions above, you might be eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits. As you can see in the graph below from Social Securitys website, Social Security receives hundreds of thousands of applications each year, and only pays benefits to a small portion of those claimants. Thats why its very important to present the strongest disability benefit claim possible and to work with a qualified Social Security Disability lawyer.

What Changes Must You Report For Supplemental Security Income

If you receive SSI, you must report the following changes if they occur at any time: if the number of people you live with changes, if your living arrangements or income changes, if your resources or assets change or if your marital status changes.

Whether you move in with a friend or family member or a friend or relative moves in with you, these changes in living arrangements, as well as the number of people living with you, must be reported to the SSA, as it can affect how much in-kind income you receive.

If your resources or assets change, you must inform the SSA about these changes and report any new bank accounts in your name. As a candidate for SSI, you are eligible if you have up to $2,000 in assets as a single person or $3,000 in assets if you are married. If your marital status changes, you must report this change to the SSI immediately to avoid penalties.

How Common Is It For Beneficiaries To Return To Work

Both Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security provide incentives for beneficiaries to work. Disability Insurance beneficiaries are encouraged to work up to their full capacity and can earn an unlimited amount for up to 12 months without losing any benefits. Beneficiaries who work for more than 12 months and have earnings above the substantial gainful activity level cease to receive a monthly benefit. If at any point in the next five years their condition worsens and they are not able to continue working above the substantial gainful activity level, however, they are eligible for expedited reinstatement of their benefits. This means they do not need to repeat the entire, and typically lengthy, disability-determination process that they initially went through to qualify for benefits.

Supplemental Security beneficiaries who are able to work are encouraged to do so as well. Their benefits are reduced based on their earningsafter the first $85 of earnings each month, which is not counted against the benefitbut by only $1 for every $2 of earnings. Beneficiaries who are able to do some work will therefore always be better off with both earnings and a reduced benefit than just the benefit alone.

What Happens If You Fail To Report Changes

Failure to report changes in your living situation, income, job status and more could result in unwanted overpayments and penalties. For example, if you do not inform the SSA of a financial change and are therefore overpaid through SSI or SSDI, you will be required to pay back the money you were granted. Additionally, your benefits may be temporarily halted until you pay back your debts. You could also be penalized financially if you fail to report any significant changes to the SSA. These penalties will be taken from your monthly benefits payments in amounts ranging from $25-100.

Further, if the SSA discovers that you have purposefully withheld information about changes in your income, living or job status, they could potentially withhold your benefits for six months, with penalties growing in severity for each additional offense. Therefore, it is imperative to accurately report any changes that may occur and keep the SSA updated on financial, income, living and other life changes.

Social Security Disability: Ticket To Work Helped Some Participants But Overpayments Increased Program Costs

GAO-22-104031

The Ticket to Work program seeks to help those receiving Social Security disability benefits find jobs and reduce reliance on benefits.

We found:

  • Participants earned an estimated $2,451 more per year and were slightly more likely to leave the disability rolls than similar nonparticipants
  • From 2002 through 2015, program costs exceeded the savings in benefits by about $806 million
  • Overpayments cost an estimated additional $133-169 million

We recommended that the Social Security Administration identify the root causes of these overpayments and take steps to address them.
