If you are a parent caring for a child with a severe disability, you may be able to receive financial support through the Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities Program.

This program provides financial support for low-income to moderate-income families to cover some of the extra costs of caring for a child who has a severe disability.

If You Have A Disabled Child

You’re allowed an extra bedroom if your child is disabled and can’t share a bedroom with another child because of their disability. You’re also allowed an extra bedroom if your child is disabled and needs regular overnight care from a carer who doesn’t live with you. You must meet the following conditions:

• your disabled child must be entitled to the middle or higher rate care component of Disability Living Allowance
• your local council must accept that your childs disability means they cant share a bedroom with another child

How Is A Family’s Income Calculated:

Does Ssdi Affect Section 8 Housing

SSDI, or Social Security Disability Insurance, is a monthly benefit payment given to those whose medical condition keeps them from working. The amount you receive is based on the amount youve paid into Social Security while employed and your age. The National Alliance on Mental Illness stated that on average, SSDI recipients received $900 in 2009. With the Census Bureau reporting that the national median rent was $842 that same year, obviously SSDI isnt always enough to cover the basics like prescriptions, food, and housing. In order to offer housing/rent assistance, HUD, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, provides Housing Choice Vouchers, previously known as Section 8, for low-income individuals.

Do Housing Benefit Size Restrictions Apply To All Types Of Homes

If you live in a certain type of social housing, you won’t be affected by the rules about size restriction.

This will be the case if you live in:

• temporary accommodation your council has put you in because you were homeless
• supported accommodation such as a house or a flat where you get extra help from support workers, or sheltered accommodation for older people

The size restrictions do not apply to site fees for a caravan or mobile home, or to mooring charges for a houseboat. But they could apply if you rent your mobile home or houseboat from the council or a housing association.

Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefits

The Canada Pension Plan provides monthly payments to people who contribute to the plan during their working years.

You may be eligible for CPP disability benefits if:

• you contributed to the CPP for a certain number of years
• you’re under 65 years old
• you have a severe and prolonged mental or physical disability
• your disability prevents you from working on a regular basis

The benefits include payments to children of a person with a disability.

Apply as early as possible if you think you’re eligible for CPP disability benefits. Quebec residents may be eligible for a similar program called the Quebec Pension Plan . It may take several months to process your application.

If you applied for CPP or QPP disability benefits and were told that you’re not eligible, you can ask to have your application reviewed or considered again.

Once you reach age 65, your CPP disability benefit will automatically change to regular CPP payments. Your regular CPP payments may be less than the CPP disability payments you got before.

Apply For Local Section 8 Housing Vouchers And Search Affordable Housing Listings In Your Area

Section 8 housing vouchers are similar to the PHAs voucher program. They offer Section 8 rental options in addition to public housing programs. So, you may have more variety with affordable housing options under the Section 8 program. However, not all housing authorities offer properties that accept both voucher types. Check open wait lists for private housing options and communities that accept Section 8 vouchers for every state here. Housing Choice Vouchers are funds distributed to local low-income individuals and families, including those with disabilities, by the federal government. You can find the program at your local Public Housing Authority, or PHA, office.
