How To Apply For Housing Assistance Grants

VA’s Adaptive Housing Grants for Disabled Veterans

The application process for VA-sponsored housing assistance grants is pretty straightforward. The application can be completed online via the VAs eBenefits portal or by mail to the closest VA regional loan center. Alternately, veterans can reach out directly to the VA by calling 800-827-1000. After the application is submitted, veterans will be notified of the VAs decision via mail or through the eBenefits portal.

However, for the HISA grant, the process is a bit more complex. In addition to completing an application form, the veteran has to provide a written prescription from a VA physician, providing a detailed overview of why the home improvement or structural alteration is merited, as well as a written itemized estimate for the cost of labor, materials, permits and potential inspections for the home alteration.

Supportive Services For Veteran Families

Disabled veterans also qualify for this program. The family can get temporary help to pay for rent, deposits, utility fees and other moving expenses. The money is paid directly to the property owner or moving company. To qualify for help, the family’s income cannot exceed 50 percent of the area’s median income and the veteran must be the head of household.

VA Housing Grants for Disabled Veterans, Housing Adaptation | Maura Neill, REALTOR

Effective Aug. 8, 2020, Public Law 116-154 opened up the SAH grant program to more veterans. Prior to the enactment of the new law, veterans suffering vision loss were only eligible for the grant if they also experienced the loss, or loss of use, of one leg.

The new law made veterans who are blind in both eyes eligible for the grant, regardless of their ability to use their lower limbs.

Also, a veterans disability rating for vision loss no longer needs to be permanent and total, just permanent for them to be eligible. The veterans vision loss requirements are also not as strict as before. Prior to the law, a veteran only could have light perception in one or both eyes to be eligible, but under the new law, a veteran with vision that can be corrected to no better than 20/200 acuity may be eligible for the housing grant.

The maximum grant amount is $1 million with $700,000 as the minimum amount. The program requires a 50 percent match through funds or in-kind contributions and dictates specific output and outcome measures.
