As a US Navy veteran, I served proudly for 4 years on the USS Little Rock CLG4 and then at the Brunswick Naval Air Station. I understand the sacrifice and the immense pride vets like myself show for this country and everything it represents. I started this hobby in my early 70s, and there is nothing better than presenting a custom American flag to another vet or any other American.     How One Disabled Veteran Is Closing In On Making 1000 Wooden Flags For Other Vets

    GUTHRIE, Okla. Its a busy garage shop these days south of town.

    Kris Morgan and, on this day, his friend Maggie Bertwell, are putting together a flag for a World War II veteran named John Pioro from North Carolina.

    His grandson turned in a nomination to Kris Facebook page.

    For Kris, this is flag number 922.

    Its changed my life, he declares. Its given me a sense of purpose and love.

    He started three years ago coming off a decade of depression and seizures caused by an accident in the Air Force that left him with permanent disabilities.

    I did spend about 10 years in major depression, he echoes.

    To change direction, he needed direction.

    Kris found it in making wooden flags and donating them to worthy fellow veterans.

    Its given me hope, drive and push, he continues.

    Starting off in a Del City garage, then moving this spring to a bigger place in Guthrie, Kris mission grew in scale as help came in.

    The Heart of a Lion Foundation helped him get settled.

    The new shop is soon to have an AC unit thanks to another donation from a social media friend.

    Its people like that making this whole thing happen, he smiles.

    Right now, Im making about 40 to 45 flags per week.

    Making his new mission in life work meant selling some larger flags to offset his material costs.

    His list of flags to donate free remains more than 100 names long.

    Sometime later this summer, Kris has something special in mind to give away his 1,000th flag.

    How American Wood Flags Are Made

    Inspection. Fingers run over the solid pine panel in front of me, a notice of imperfection an accounting of unique features and grain flow. A beauty of moldable, natural creation ready to be transformed. Destined for something special, a journey before it a work of art will become of it.

    A repetitious process, thirteen stripes will be carved into it along with a union. An appreciation of material can be felt as the smell of fresh cut pine fills the air. With each pass a noticeable transformation begins to take place, building on the previous, as the detail begins to form. Each carve is inspected, there is meaning and purpose in every stripe it must be perfect. This time belongs to the wood, what will follow belongs to the American legacy.

    A brush, light with red stain runs across the first stripe. Through careful edging my mind begins to wander to a place I have never left, a war-torn foreign soil that forever pulls me in.

    A reenactment of events pour over my thoughts. A time and place relived a remembrance of friends, my brothers heroes who shared a belief in freedom, and some who gave all in blood. Respect.

    Therapeutic. An opportunity to accept. An opportunity to heal. A reflection of thoughts that now rests on the red, white and blue before it. A reinforcement of the good that we have done, of the people that we have helped of a nation that we can be proud of.

    EASTON, Mass.

    Tom Farrell shared with us memories that for decades he has kept stored away.

    The Mansfield resident said a surprise gift, a handmade wooden flag, moved him to open up about being drafted to serve in the Vietnam War.

    “I served there 67, 68 with the 11th Armored Cavalry division and came out of the jungle, got on a helicopter, was sent to the airport, came home and put everything in my pocket and never talked about it again,” Farrell said.

    For decades, Farrell said he just felt lucky to have survived and was thankful that people didn’t ask him about his service, but then the flag arrived, its stars and stripes carefully constructed.

    “All individual hardwoods, Farrell said. Matched, individually stained, the stars are carved by hand and it’s heavy, absolutely beautiful.”

    The man responsible for the beautiful craftsmanship is Chris Mills, who since he was a kid was called to build things and help others.

    “When I was in high school for whatever obscene reason, I wanted to be a contractor and I also wanted to be a paramedic, a firefighter,” Mills said.

    He is now both, in the town of Easton. Five years ago, Mills constructed a wooden flag for the retirement of a local police officer as a favor.

    Veterans have been the most frequent recipients.

    Mills said he didn’t know Farrell was a veteran, despite knowing him for years.

    Handmade Wooden Flags Auctioned Off Gift Requests Poured In

    Still yearning to serve his new nation any way he could, Mick joined the SLMPD in 2015. Two years later, in 2017, St. Louis protests led to violence and gunfire, and a fellow police officer was injured. In efforts to raise money for the injured officers medical bills, the SLMPD organized a fundraiser. Mick participated in the fundraiser, having a first-hand knowledge of the lasting impact of sustaining injuries in the line of duty.

    Mick put his creativity to work and designed specialized wooden police department-themed American flags.

    Once Micks creations were for the fundraisers auction, he was met with a slew of requests for similar orders. People proudly paid for these customized pieces, which prompted Mick to open South City Woodworks. And the rest, as they say, is historyor in Micks case, a new beginning.
