No. VA disability compensation is not considered income, and therefore does not affect your Social Security Benefits, nor does Social Security reduce your VA disability compensation.
VA disability compensation also does not affect Social Security Disability Insurance benefits or SSDI.

What Is The Aid And Attendance Benefit
The VAs Aid and Attendance benefit is designed to help lessen the financial burden of qualified veterans and/or their surviving family members who need additional help with day-to-day activities. This benefit is an additional payment added to existing disability benefit amounts.
Specifically, the Aid and Attendance program provides tax-free payments to veterans who served during wartime. In addition to veterans themselves, veterans surviving spouses and dependent children also are eligible to receive Aid and Attendance benefits. To be eligible for this extra benefit, the veteran or their surviving spouse or dependents must meet specified income and asset thresholds.
Aid and Attendance is one of the lesser-known VA benefits. It is a VA medical rating that allows for additional financial support in the case of veterans, surviving spouses, or qualifying dependents who need the regular aid and attendance of a caregiver.
If a disabled veteran, surviving spouse, or dependent needs assistance with daily activities like bathing, feeding, and dressing, they may qualify for an Aid and Attendance benefit payment. In addition, if a veteran or family member is confined to a bed because of a rated, service-connected disability or medical condition and/or is a patient in a nursing home or suffers from limited eyesight, an additional Aid and Attendance benefit may be approved by the VA.

What Is The Eligibility Criteria Of The Additional Pain And Suffering Compensation

When Does The Va Reevaluate Disability Cases
The VA might require you to have a medical reexamination six months after leaving service and then again between two and five years later. The exam is used to verify the continued existence or the current severity of your disability. The VA will require a reexamination when:
- it’s likely that your disability has improved
- evidence indicates there’s been a significant change in your condition, or
- there’s reason to believe your current disability rating is incorrect.
If your health has improved significantly, the VA may choose to reevaluate your condition. If the VA lowers your disability percentage rating, the amount of your benefits will be lowered too. The VA might also determine that the condition that disabled you no longer exists and discontinue your benefits altogether.
Why Will Vac No Longer Be Providing Support To Medically
Currently, all medically-released Veterans can access services through both the CAF LTD plan and Veterans Affairs Canada. CAF LTD is, and has always been, the first payer. The goal of the change is to simplify existing supports for Veterans to reduce confusion and duplication of the services being provided.
Support will continue for medically-released Veterans. This support is more generous than Public Service Health Care Plans and is specifically tailored to support the needs of releasing CAF members. All medically releasing members have access to other benefits such as the Education and Training Benefit and Career Transition Services. Nor will support be taken away from those Veterans who experience health problem after they have released that result primarily from their service and cause a barrier to re-establishment.
As the employer sponsored group disability plan, CAF LTD will continue as first payer for income support, and as the first provider of vocational rehabilitation and vocational assistance for all medically-releasing CAF members, as it has since the 1970s.

Va Disability Compensation Explained
VA disability compensation is a tax-free monetary benefit paid to veterans with service-connected conditions .
To qualify for disability compensation, a veteran must first establish service connection for their disabling condition. Generally, service connection requires evidence of the following three elements:
- A current diagnosis of a condition by a medical professional
- An in-service event, injury, or illness and
- A medical nexus, or link, between the current condition and the in-service event.
Once service connection is granted, VA will assign a disability rating based on the severity of the veterans condition. Essentially, the more severe the condition, the higher the disability rating. VA disability ratings range from 0 to 100 percent, in increments of 10.
How Do I Apply For Va Disability Benefits
The Department of Veterans Affairs recommends eligible Veterans apply for disability compensation benefits through the VA’s eBenefits online portal. However, Veterans may also apply by mail with VA Form 21-526EZ, in person at your regional benefits office, or with help from a trained professional.
In any case, you will need access to your DD214 , the medical evidence of the disability, and dependency records .
If you have yet to separate from service, you may still apply using the Benefits Delivery at Discharge program. To be eligible for the BDD, you must:
- Be on full-time active duty , and
- Have a known separation date, and
- Your separation date is in the next 90 to 180 days
If you have less than 90 days until separation, you may still file a fully developed or standard claim.

Combined Rating System For Veterans With Multiple Disabilities
Veterans with multiple disabilities use the combined rating system.
To use the combined rating system, arrange the disabilities in order by severity and locate the intersect of the two numbers on the table below.
The VA rounds the final figure to the nearest to 10 percent.
If the Veteran has more than two disabilities, find the combined value for the first two, without rounding, and repeat with the third disability. Once you have a final number, round to the nearest 10%.
For example, if disability 1’s rating is 40% and disability 2’s is 20%, the combined rating is 52%. That figure gets rounded to the nearest 10%, making the disability rating 50%.
For a three-disability example, if disability 1’s rating is 60%, disability 2’s rating is 30%, and disability 3’s rating is 20%, we first find the rating of 1 and 2. The rating of 1 and 2 comes out to be 72. We then take the first combined rating and find the intersect with disability 3. The final number comes out at an even 80% rating.
How Are Veterans Disability Benefits Determined
First, you have to apply for veterans disability benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs . You’ll need documentation that supports your claim. To qualify for benefits through the VA, you must be a veteran who served on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training. You also must currently have a medically diagnosed condition that affects your body or mind. Your disability must be “service-connected,” meaning at least one of the following must be true:
- You were injured or became sick in the line of duty while serving in the military .

A Veteran may qualify if they are a Canadian Armed Forces Veteran who has a barrier to re-establishment because of service-related physical or mental health problem, and they are taking part in VAC rehabilitation services.
A Veteran who is participating in the VAC rehabilitation program will be evaluated to see if their eligible permanent physical or mental health problem associated with their Income Replacement Benefit results in a permanent Diminished Earning Capacity . If it turns out that the Veteran does have a DEC, then the IRB may be extended for the Veteran’s lifetime or until the Veteran no longer has a DEC.
For those who have an eligible permanent physical or mental health problem that results in a diminished earning capacity, the Income Replacement Benefit will be increased by 1% every year until the Veteran reaches what would have been 20 years of service or age 60. The benefit is also available to qualified survivors and dependent children after the death of the Veteran.

The CAF LTD plan is the CAF’s group disability insurance plan that provides vocational rehabilitation, vocational assistance and income support to all medically releasing CAF members.
