If you wish to request leave without pay for illness or injury, you must provide a medical certificate from your physician. With this certificate, and the indication of a likely return to work within a reasonable period of time, your manager will consider granting you leave without pay for illness or injury.
Once your leave without pay is approved, your manager will notify your departmental human resources. They will then notify the Pay Centre through a pay action request form. The Pay Centre will take the appropriate action to temporarily stop your salary.

If you are an Unemployment Insurance customer, California Training Benefits allows you to continue your education, upgrade your skills, or learn a new trade while receiving UI benefits.
To protect your potential right to a training extension ,;contact UI;to let EDD know that you are interested before your 16th week of benefit payments. If the maximum award of your claim is less than 16 weeks, you must contact EDD before your claim reaches a zero balance.

When Should I File My Claim
You must file your claim between 9 and 49 days after the start of your disability. You cannot submit your application until the 9th day, and if you wait too long you may lose your benefits. Key Distinctions Between Short Term And Long Term Disability Insurance
Short term disability insurance provides income replacement if you are unable to perform the duties of your occupation for a short period of time. Long term disability insurance provides continued benefits if the illness or injury keeps you out of work for a longer period of time. Aside from this rather obvious difference, there are a few other differences you should be aware of.
First, short term disability insurance benefits can end if you lose your employment while disabled. This means if you become unable to continue working due to a disability and you lose your job because your employer refuses to hold your job for you, your short term disability benefits may end. It is much more common for short term disability insurance benefits to continue, even if you lose your job, but you should be aware this may happen. Long term disability insurance benefits, however, will continue even if you lose your job. This makes sense because long term disability benefits are meant to cover extended periods of time in which you are unable to work, and seriously injured workers often cannot ever return to their old jobs.
Beyond this, special rules may apply to your short term disability insurance claim. This may impact your ability to recover benefits.
Not Having Paid Into Sdi Or Not Having Earned Enough In Your Base Period
In addition to having a non-work-related injury or illness, to get SDI benefits:
- If you’re an employee, you must have had California SDI taxes taken out of your paychecks, and you must have earned at least $300 in your base period .
- If you’re an independent contractor or business owner, you must have paid into Elective Coverage for at least 6 months.
If you have not paid California SDI taxes during the base period, you do not qualify for SDI.
Example: For the last three years, you’ve been working for a company in Phoenix, Arizona. Three months ago, you got a promotion and were transferred to their office in San Diego. Since working in the San Diego office, 1.2% of your pay has gone to SDI. However, you don’t qualify for SDI yet, because during your base period, you lived in Arizona and weren’t paying into SDI.

How Do I Contact The Sdi Program

Why Does It Take So Long To Get Paid
This summer, the unemployment horror stories started to boil over. As out-of-work Californians slogged through150 redials to the unemployment office or long waits for checks docked for previously unknown penalties, The Mercury News reported that just 3.1 million of the more than 5 million California workers who applied for benefits from March to May had received their first checks by early July.
In late September, officials at EDD made the decision to;pause accepting unemployment claims until early October, after the release of a “strike team” report commissioned by Gov. Gavin Newsom that highlights the department’s need for a massive overhaul to meet the demand of millions of people who are out of work.
The report, released Sept. 19, emphasizes that the department is wholly unequipped to handle its rapidly growing backlog of some 10,000 unemployment claims a day.;In a letter to Newsom, EDD Director Sharon Hilliard said the “pause” would allow her department to catch up with its backlog and implement new technologies, strategies and protocols to tackle the overwhelming number of claims.
The department is once again accepting new unemployment insurance claims as of Oct. 5.
Theres also no denying how drastically the workload has increased. The state processed eight times as many applications during the worst week so far of the coronavirus recession 1,058,325 in the third week of March than the worst week after the financial crisis, according to a CalMatters analysis.
G Appealing An Adverse Decision On An Unemployment Claim
1. How do I appeal a decision from the EDD on my unemployment claim?
You have the right to appeal the EDD’s decision to reduce or deny you benefits. You must submit your appeal in writing within 30 days of the mailing date on the;Notice of Determination and/or Ruling;.
You can download the;Appeal Form;or use the copy included with the Notice of Determination that you receive. Mail your appeal to the return address shown on the decision notice.
If you dont have a copy of the;Appeal Form;, or cannot print a copy, you can write a letter to the EDD to notify the Department that you want to appeal the decision to reduce or deny you benefits.

California Golden State Stimulus Program
Many unemployed and lower income Californians have also been able to partake of the Golden State Stimulus program which provides a one time $600 or $1200 to qualifying individuals and families. Most of these payments will be made by the end of May, or generally 2 to 4 weeks after filing your state tax return.
However Governor Gavin Newsom has recently announced, thanks to state budget surplus and federal funding via the Biden ARPA stimulus package, another nearly $12 billion in direct cash payments. This expansion to the Golden State Stimulus, providing additional direct payments to middle-class families;that make up to $75,000, will provide $600 direct payments. Qualified families with dependents, including undocumented families,;will also now be eligible for an additional $500 dependent payment.
