What Day Do You Get Your Disability Check

Don't Miss

If A Person Receives A Social Security Check And Then Dies Does That Check Need To Be Returned

When and how you get your first disability check

The Social Security Administration pays retirement and disability benefits the month after the month covered. You receive June benefits in July. You may think that if you die in June, your benefit check paid in July would be valid and would not require that your survivors return it. The Social Security regulations require your survivors to return checks received covering retirement or disability benefits for the month of death.

When Your Benefits Start

Generally, if your application for Social Security Disability Insurance is approved, you must wait five months before you can receive your first SSDI benefit payment. This means you would receive your first payment in the sixth full month after the date we find that your disability began.

Example: Your disability began on June 15, 2020 and you applied on July 1, 2020. Your first benefit would be paid for the month of December 2020, the sixth full month of disability.

However, there is no waiting period if your disability results from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and you are approved for SSDI benefits on or after July 23, 2020.

Example: We found that your disability began on November 3, 2020 and you applied on January 11, 2021. We would pay your first benefit for the month of December 2020, the first full month of disability.

We pay SSDI benefits in the month following the month for which they are due. This means that the benefit due for December 2020 would be paid to you in January 2021, and so on.

What If The Social Security Administration Finds That My Disability Has Ceased But Im Still Not Able To Work

The notice, which you will receive from the Social Security Administration following a continuing disability review, will explain your appeal rights. Read this notice carefully. If you appeal within ten days of the date you receive the notice your benefits will continue during your appeal. So be sure to act quickly.

What Benefits Do You Get From Social Security Disability ...

While the basic rule for Social Security disability is defined as a condition that has lasted or is expected to last for at least 12 months, that should not necessarily determine when you apply for benefits.

“If an individual is not working and earning income, then they’re allowed to apply now,” Geist said. “There’s not a set period of time where they have to wait to apply.”

However, there are certain financial restrictions that claimants will have to meet to be approved.

For starters, you must have paid so-called FICA taxes into the system. Generally, you have to contribute for at least 10 years in order to be eligible.

Additionally, your condition must meet Social Security’s definition of a disability. It must be so severe that you can no longer work. It must also be expected to last for at least a year or result in death.

In addition, your income must fall below certain a certain threshold known as substantial gainful activity. In 2021, that limit is $1,310 per month for non-blind individuals.

Those who have not paid FICA taxes may instead qualify for Supplemental Security Income, or SSI. However, those benefits are means tested and come with strict asset limits of $2,000 per individual, or $3,000 per married couple.

While some disabled workers may be tempted to take advantage of expanded pandemic unemployment insurance benefits that are still available in some states, that could hurt your chances of getting approved for disability benefits, Geist said.

Five Things You Need To Know About Social Security Disability Back Pay

The Social Security Disability process can take a long time, especially since most claims get denied at least once. Its not uncommon for people to feel frustrated and want to quit but theres a good reason to stay the course. Most people who get approved for Disability benefits receive more than just monthly checks. They also receive a substantial amount of back pay, which is usually paid in one lump sum.

The amount of back pay you are owed depends on variety of factors, including when you became disabled, when you applied for benefits, and how long you waited before finally getting approved. Like most aspects of the Social Security Disability process, back pay can be very confusing. Here are five things you need to know about Social Security Disability back pay:

You may be entitled to back pay and retroactive benefits.

Back payments are past due benefits. That is, the money the Social Security Administration would have started to pay you if they had approved your application immediately after you filed. Back payments are owed to you from the date of your application to the date that the SSA approved you for Disability benefits.

Because of theres a huge backlog of Disability claims, nearly everyone who gets approved is entitled to some amount of back pay. There is no limit to the amount of back pay you can receive. All this time you have been waiting, back pay has been building up.

When Are Monthly Ssdi Benefit Checks Deposited

The date that your SSDI check is deposited every month will depend on three factors: whether or not you receive other benefits, when you were first approved for benefits, and your birthday.

Some people receive both SSDI and Supplemental Security Income benefits. If you receive both types of benefits, you will receive your monthly check on the third day of the month. But if the third day of the month falls on a weekend or holiday, you will receive your payment for that month the day before. So if the third of a month falls on a Saturday, your payment for that month will be deposited on Friday the 2nd instead.

If you were initially approved for SSDI benefits prior to 1997, you will also receive your SSDI checks on the third day of every month. The same rule regarding weekends and holidays applies to payments for these recipients.

If you were initially approved for SSDI benefits after 1997, the date you will receive your monthly SSDI check will vary depending on your birthday.

If your birthday is between the 1st and 10th, you will receive your SSDI check on the second Wednesday of every month. If your birthday is between the 11th and 20th of a month, you will receive your SSDI check on the third Wednesday of every month. Finally, if your birthday is between the 21st and 31st of a month, you will receive your SSDI check on the fourth Wednesday of the month.
