Many states and localities have anti-discrimination laws similar to the ADA and agencies responsible for enforcing those laws. These agencies are often called “Fair Employment Practices Agencies . If you file a complaint with a FEPA and you are also covered by the ADA, the FEPA may “dual file” the complaint with the EEOC to protect your federal rights. The FEPA will usually handle your complaint after letting the EEOC know about it. If you file a complaint with the EEOC and you are also covered by state or local law, EEOC may dual file the complaint with your state or local FEPA, but usually handles the complaint.

What Can You Do

It’s easy for people with disabilities, and others, to participate in the Campaign and drive positive change. For example, the campaign’s website, whatcanyoudocampaign.org, offers users the chance to learn, express their commitment to disability employment efforts and share their employment experiences. The site offers posters your department can use to show your support for the campaign.

Establish An Employee Resource Group

NDEAM is a perfect time to launch a disability Employee Resource Group . Sometimes referred to as Employee Networks or Affinity Groups, ERGs offer employees an opportunity to connect and receive support from others with similar backgrounds or interests. If your company already has a disability ERG, consider using NDEAM to remind employees about it through displays, information tables or other communication channels.

Campaign For Disability Employment Promotes Positive Employment Outcomes For People With Disabilities

Disabled Spectator is revolutionizing the way people with disabilities, their family and friends connect and enjoy entertainment and sporting events at public venues. To achieve our mission, it is important to recognize, promote, and work with organizations that have similar goals. At this point, wed like to introduce one such organization the Campaign for Disability Employment .

CDE is a collaboration of organizations that are also in the fight for inclusion. The alliance consists of the American Association of People with Disabilities , the National Business and Disability Council , the Job Accommodation Network , the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce , the Society for Human Resource Management , the Special Olympics, and the U.S. Business Leadership Network .

Above all, the CDE encourages employers to recognize the talents that people with disabilities bring to the work environment. They also help them realize the benefits of creating an inclusive workplace. As a result, they are promoting positive employment outcomes for people with disabilities.

Nacdd On National Disability Employment Awareness Month 2020

    The roots of this month date back to 1945 when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October to be National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Since then, the US Department of Labor has created the Office of Disability Employment Policy to ensure that people with disabilities are seen as valued members of the labor force and have the resources necessary to be outstanding employees.

    NACDD celebrates NDEAM as it brings people with disabilities into the forefront of the workforce conversation, ensuring that their voices are heard. We truly believe that this celebration sheds light on the wonderful accomplishments our nation has made in its ability to support a fully inclusive workforce, said Donna Meltzer, CEO of NACDD. We still have much work to do but we are making progress every day and will continue to focus on the employment of people with disabilities well beyond the month-long celebration.

    National Organization On Disability’s ‘look Closer’ Campaign Featured In Nyc Taxi Cabs And Bus Shelters Throughout New York

    Campaign Urges Corporate America to Look Closer and Rethink Hiring Practices

    NEW YORK – The National Organization on Disability and the New York City Mayors Office for People with Disabilities today announced a partnership that will allow NODs new Look Closer public-awareness campaign to be featured in New York City taxi cabs and on 50 bus shelters across the city. As part of the partnership, PSAs featuring messages that urge U.S. employers and job recruiters to think differently about people with disabilities when they seek to add new talent are running on New York City Public Access and Taxi TV.

    Led by the outstanding work of Commissioner Victor Calise, MOPD has long been a proponent of employment for the citys disabled population, said NOD President Carol Glazer. We are grateful to MOPD for helping us to extend the message of the Look Closer campaign to thousands of New York commuters and visitors so that we can expose them to this important message.

    In addition to supporting the Look Closer campaign, MOPD has established NYC: ATWORK, the first business driven, public-private partnership for employment for New Yorkers with disabilities. This collaboration with business, colleges, vocational rehabilitation and non-profits agencies and city government is connecting NYC: ATWORK participants who are unemployed or underemployed to meaningful, living wage jobs across the citys five boroughs.

    Campaign For Disability Employment Announces Runner

    Members of the public selected favorite videos featuring ability and talent

    WASHINGTON The Campaign for Disability Employment, a collaborative of leading disability and business organizations funded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy, today announced the runner-up winners of the 2012 “What can YOU do?” video contest. Overall contest winners in three categories were announced in late May, and the public was asked to participate by voting for the top two videos out of four runners-up. Nearly 900 votes were cast.

    The first runner-up video, “Hire Me for My Ability,” was submitted by Developmental Disabilities Service Organization Inc.’s Employment Plus program, which is based in Sacramento, Calif. The video shows the many occupations in which people with disabilities are using their talents to contribute to the workplace and reminds viewers that people with disabilities should be hired for their abilities.

    The second runner-up video, “Yes I Can,” was submitted by students from the Henry Viscardi School in Albertson, N.Y. The video features people with disabilities who are valuable assets to their workplaces. It encourages employers to provide opportunities, hire people with disabilities and focus on abilities.

    Who I Am Now Airing On More Than 650 Tv Stations And Cable Outlets Nationwide

    The “Who I Am” PSA debuted at the White House in October 2014 and has aired more than 175,000 times on television stations and cable outlets nationwide. It is available online and for mail order on an accessible talking menu DVD.

    “Who I Am” features nine real people with disabilities. Rather than be defined by disability, these individuals are the sum of their many life roles which includes working in jobs they love. The message of “Who I Am” is to remind us to see one another for who we are and what we can contribute.

    Because Celebrating The Power Of Youth Influencers

    The “Because” Campaign, which includes the “Because” PSA, posters and discussion guides, was released in January 2013. Since then, it has aired more than 112,000 times on television and cable stations nationwide, at the Indianapolis 500 automobile race, on electronic billboards alongside interstate highways, and many meetings, conferences, and presentations. “Because” reflects ODEP’s work around youth with disabilities, and the important roles that parents, teachers, coaches, mentors, and future employers play in shaping the career aspirations of youth with disabilities. Together, “Because” and “Who I Am” have been ranked in the top 1% of all PSAs as reported by Nielsen Media Research.

    WASHINGTON, D.C., September 18, 2009 Last evening at the U.S. Business Leadership Networks Annual Conference and National Career Fair, several leading disability organizations launched the Campaign for Disability Employment, a new collaborative effort to promote positive employment outcomes for people with disabilities. Announcement of the nationwide campaign built around the theme What Can YOU Do? came during the conferences keynote speech by Robert David Hall, actor and disability rights advocate.

    Every day, people with disabilities can and do add value to Americas workplaces. However, in both good economic times and bad, people with disabilities have far fewer job opportunities than the general population. The Campaign for Disability Employments goal is to promote the hiring, retention and advancement of people with disabilities and dispel negative stereotypes about disability and employment.

    About The Campaign For Disability Employment

    Funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, the Campaign for Disability Employment is a collaborative among several disability and business organizations that aim to change attitudes and improve employment opportunities for people with disabilities. In fact, the CDE is behind a series of public service announcements that have aired hundreds of thousands of times on television stations nationwide. Pat, Elizabeth and Denyse are just a few of the people featured in the “Who I Am” PSA.

    GCDD held a virtual workshop on how to be successful with the inclusive and equitable employment of people with developmental disabilities and why it is important to employers, employees and the wider community. The event fostered real discussions between employers/supervisors and their disabled employees. The goal was to provide usable tips and tools for employers & employees and address potential hesitancy of employers to try inclusive hiring.

    The inspiration for my painting, In Our Hands came from the dynamics involved in a healthy coral reef such as the Flower Gardens we have in the Gulf. Just like in our lives, it takes the interaction of many diverse and living thingsin a multitude of colors, shapes, sizes and functionsto make the whole community successful and thrive.

    In the same way, every single one of us needs a special niche where we can contribute our unique skills and natural talents. And in return, through give and take, have our needs met in order to reach a balance. The vitality of any environment or community relies on this equilibrium.

    I am a 64 year-old resident of Bryan, Texas, and a middle school science teacher, a mother, and a grandmother. In 1999, I suddenly contracted Transverse Myelitis, which resulted in paralysis from the waist down, chronic pain and limited use of both hands. I am a user of a wheelchair but that does not diminish my worth as a person, nor do I let that be a defining factor of who I am.
