And The Best Choice For Vets Is Musc Health

VA hospital moving to North Charleston

Working with your VA physicians, the Health Administration Service and Healthnet, the contractor that administers the program, you can be referred to the hospital of your choice, provided that the hospital or physician offers the service you need.

While there are other good hospitals in the area, we hope you will choose MUSC Health. Heres why:

  • MUSC Health has had a close relationship with the Ralph Johnson VA for decades
  • Many of the doctors and other providers at the VA were trained at the Medical University of South Carolina and also work for MUSC Health in addition to the VA
  • MUSC was named the #1 Hospital in South Carolina by U.S. News & World Report
  • Its the only NCI-designated cancer center in the state
  • MUSC has the most comprehensive Heart & Vascular Center
  • As a comprehensive academic medical center, MUSC has more nationally and internationally recognized specialists than any other local hospital
  • The Institute of Psychiatry and the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences Military Sciences Division have been working successfully with vets suffering from PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • MUSC Health has historically provided a military-friendly environment for: students and post graduate trainees employees including clinical and support staff active, Guard and veteran patients and their families and the government and non-government agencies and organizations that work with the military community

Mission: Serving Those Who Served

Welcome to the Charleston County Veterans Affairs Office website. We are proud to serve our Veteran population in one of the most military-friendly locations in the United States.

On March 22, 1945, the SC General Assembly adopted a bill creating a Veterans Affairs office in each of the states 46 counties. Although mandated by the legislature, employees in this office are employed by Charleston County, not the Federal VA.

We are an advocate for Veterans and their surviving dependents. We provide the assistance needed in applying for benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs and for VA medical care. The Charleston County VA Office assists former and present members of the US Armed Forces and their dependents in preparing claims.

This office assists Veterans and their dependents in filing applications to determine their basic eligibility and conditions of benefits entitlement as administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Types of benefits include but are not limited to: service connected disabilities and non-service connected pension death pension benefits burial medical care educational assistance, including vocational rehabilitation guaranteed home loans government life insurance and other benefits.

The state-of-the-art 75,000 sq. ft. facility, designed to focus on primary care and dental services with select specialty care for Veterans, is scheduled to open this summer at full capability but will be used temporarily as a vaccination clinic to meet the demands of Veterans requesting the vaccination. Veterans 70-years-old and older who are enrolled in VA health care are currently eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at this location, by appointment. The clinic will be able to vaccinate up to 5,000 Veterans per week, dependent on the availability of vaccines. We were approved to be one of the first VA facilities to distribute both the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines and we are eager to get the vaccine to as many Veterans as possible, said Scott Isaacks, Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center CEO. Our goal is to distribute vaccines as quickly as we can and as soon as they arrive.
