Veterans Pension Versus Disability Compensation
In some cases, veterans can receive disability compensation. It’s not the same as the VA pension. Heres a way to tell the difference:
Disability compensation is for an illness or injury that happens because of or was made worse by your military service. Its not income-based and war service is not required.
A VA pension is for war veterans with a low income and who may have a disability that is not service-related.
Gi Bill Education Benefits
All versions of the GI Bill, including the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Montgomery GI Bill, provide tax-free benefits for higher education, including undergraduate and postgraduate study as well as vocational training. You dont have to report these benefits as income on your tax return.
If you qualify, you can claim tax credits such as the Lifetime Learning Credit or the American Opportunity Credit Lifetime Learning Credit or the American Opportunity Credit in addition to using the applicable GI Bill for education expenses. Note that if you do, your credit will be reduced for any money the GI Bill contributes toward your tuition and fees. For example, if your tuition bill is $5,000 one year, and the GI Bill pays for $4,000 of it, your credit would be based on the $1,000 you paid yourself.

Your Fein Is Important
Each business that is a legal entity has its own, unique Federal Employer Identification Number assigned to it. The FEIN is the Boardâs primary identification for that business.
Employers must notify their insurance carrier of FEIN when
- Obtaining or modifying disability and Paid Family Leave benefits coverage.
- Changing their legal entity type.
- Adding new legal entities to their business operations.
When an employer obtains an insurance policy, it is the insurerâs responsibility to electronically notify the Board of that coverage using the employerâs FEIN.
If the FEIN on your notice is the correct legal FEIN , contact your insurance carrier and request they submit the correct FEIN to the Board.
If the FEIN on the policy is the correct legal FEIN , send a copy of your CP575 issued by the Internal revenue Service to the New York State Department of Labor, Registration Section, State Office Campus, Building 12, Albany, NY 12240 or fax it to 485-8010.

Disability Compensation Disability compensation is a monetary benefit paid to veterans who are disabled by injury or disease incurred or aggravated during active military service. The service of the veteran must have been terminated through separation or discharge under conditions that were other than dishonorable. Disability compensation varies with the degree of disability and the number of dependants, and is paid monthly. The benefits are not subject to federal or state income tax. The payment of retirement pay, disability severance pay and separation incentive payments known as SSB and VSI also affects the amount of VA compensation paid.

The short answer is no, these benefits are NOT taxable and should NOT be reported on your tax return as income. Just like VA health benefits, education benefits are connected to your service and not reported to the IRS. If you have done so in the past, you should have your returns amended for additional savings. You should receive a 1098-T showing what the VA paid for.
Excerpt from IRS Publication 970
Payments you receive for education, training, or subsistence under any law administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs are tax free.
To be clear, this means you do NOT claim GI Bill® benefits or other government funded education benefits as income. This also means you cannot take deductions or credits for expenses that are paid with grants or VA benefits.

Definition Of A Disabled Veteran
The Disabled Veterans’ Exemption is available to a qualified veteran who:
- Is blind in both eyes. Being blind in both eyes means having a visual acuity of 5/200 or less, or concentric contraction of the visual field to 5 degrees or less.
- Has lost the use of two or more limbs. Losing the use of a limb means that the limb has been amputated or its use has been lost by reason of ankylosis, progressive muscular dystrophies, or paralysis.
- Was totally disabled as a result of injury or disease incurred in military service. Being totally disabled means that the United States Department of Veterans Affairs or the veteran’s military branch has rated the disability at 100 percent or has rated the disability compensation at 100 percent by reason of being unable to secure or follow a substantially gainful occupation. If a veteran has received a disability rating of 100 percent from the USDVA, the county assessor should consider the veteran qualified for the exemption without requiring further documentation of disability, such as medical files.
The Disabled Veterans’ Exemption is also available to an unmarried surviving spouse of a deceased veteran who:
- Qualified for the exemption during their lifetime or
- Would have qualified for the exemption is they had been alive on January 1, 1977 or
- Died from a service-connected injury or disease.
