However, the Stolen Valor Act of 2013 makes it a crime for someone to claim they received certain medals in order to obtain money, property, or some other tangible benefit. The law only bars false claims about certain military awards, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and a few others and ONLY when someone makes a false claim about them to gain money or some tangible benefit a crime. Someone falsely claiming military service in order to brag or impress others is not a crime. We take all reports of suspected fraud seriously and assess every report.

Sometimes you may not see changes to someones situation. This can be because the information you give us does not always result in a change in a persons payment or service.

In some cases we may be unable to take any further action. For example, we may find any of the following:

• the person you name does not receive a payment or service from us
• we cannot identify the person
• the information does not affect the payment or service the person receives
• the information does not match the persons situation
• the information provided is not fraud against us where we are the victim

Where we find enough evidence of criminal behaviour we may refer matters to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions. This may lead to criminal charges and imprisonment.

Investigation of criminal offences can be a lengthy process and it may take several years before details become publicly known, if at all.

Not all investigations find enough evidence to prove a criminal offence. Even if someone receives an ineligible payment through a mistake or error, people must repay the money.
