About 2021 Va Disability Compensation Rates

50% – 60% VA Benefits and Advantages In 8 Minutes!!!

Your 2021 VA disability compensation is a monthly tax-free payment from the Department of Veterans Affairs paid to former military service members who sustained an illness or injury during their time in service. Veterans with preexisting conditions exacerbated by their time in service, or who develop service-connected disabilities following their time in service, may also apply for benefits. Veterans may also receive additional benefit due to extenuating circumstances, including their number of dependents, loss of limb or other severe injury, or by having a disabled spouse.

It is important to note that this benefit is not permanent, and it may be subject to review. On a wider scale, the VA may change its rating schedule at any time, but it may also reexamine your individual claim to judge whether your disability has improved or worsened, thus affecting your benefit amount. In case of the latter, you would want to initiate the review yourself to ensure they receive a higher benefit for a worse disability.

We Wouldnt Miss Your Retirement Party

When most people think of Social Security, they think of retirement benefits with good reason. But we are more than retirement benefits we offer many online tools to help you plan for your future.

Use Social Securitys to see what your benefits could be based on when you retire and if your income changes.

Va Disability Ratings: Subject To Review And Not Always Permanent

The Department of Veterans Affairs reserves the right to change VA disability rating schedules, screening requirements, and even revisit the VA award itself to see if the condition has improved or gotten worse over time.

In some cases you may get a letter from the VA instructing you to participate in a re-examination of your claim in others the veteran herself may wish to have the claim reviewed. This is especially true in cases where the veteran feels the condition is not improving or getting worse.

Do not skip the re-examination process. Doing so may subject you to a more arbitrary decision from the VA.

Find your basic rate

Go to the compensation rates for your disability rating. On the Basic rates table, find the amount for your disability rating and dependent status. This is your monthly basic rate.

Example :If you’re a Veteran with a 30% disability rating, and you have a dependent spouse , your monthly basic rate would be $493.35 each month.

Find your added amounts, if any apply

If your spouse receives Aid and Attendance benefits or you have more than one child, you may qualify for additional monthly payment amounts as listed in the Added amounts table.

First, determine your basic rate.

Example :If youre a Veteran with a 70% disability rating, and you have a spouse, plus 3 dependent children under the age of 18, you would start with the basic rate of $1,656.71 .

Next, look at the Added amounts table. Find the amount for children under age 18 .

Since your basic rate already provides payment for 1 child, you would add the rate of $61.00 for each additional child .

If your spouse receives Aid and Attendance, you would also add $113 .

In our example of a Veteran with 70% disability rating, your total monthly payment amount would be:

$1,656.71 basic rate + $61 +$61 +$113 Total $1,891.71

What Is The Aid And Attendance Benefit

The VAs Aid and Attendance benefit is designed to help lessen the financial burden of qualified veterans and/or their surviving family members who need additional help with day-to-day activities. This benefit is an additional payment added to existing disability benefit amounts.

Specifically, the Aid and Attendance program provides tax-free payments to veterans who served during wartime. In addition to veterans themselves, veterans surviving spouses and dependent children also are eligible to receive Aid and Attendance benefits. To be eligible for this extra benefit, the veteran or their surviving spouse or dependents must meet specified income and asset thresholds.

Aid and Attendance is one of the lesser-known VA benefits. It is a VA medical rating that allows for additional financial support in the case of veterans, surviving spouses, or qualifying dependents who need the regular aid and attendance of a caregiver.

If a disabled veteran, surviving spouse, or dependent needs assistance with daily activities like bathing, feeding, and dressing, they may qualify for an Aid and Attendance benefit payment. In addition, if a veteran or family member is confined to a bed because of a rated, service-connected disability or medical condition and/or is a patient in a nursing home or suffers from limited eyesight, an additional Aid and Attendance benefit may be approved by the VA.

Specific eligibility requirements associated with Aid and Attendance include the following:

How Va Assigns A Disability Rating

VA assigns a disability rating based on the frequency, duration, and severity of symptoms it uses to characterize a certain condition.

A veterans service-connected condition must have a combined disability rating of at least 10 percent for the veteran to qualify for VA monthly compensation. The highest scheduler disability rating VA can assign to a veterans condition is 100 percent, which yields the highest amount of monthly disability compensation.

How Does The Va Determine Ratings

To determine the amount of a veterans VA disability benefit, the VA needs to quantify the severity of the disability. When you submit a claim for VA disability benefits, its imperative to include all relevant medical documentation and evidence about your medical condition. After a medical examination and thorough review of the medical evidence, the VA assigns a rating based on the severity of the veterans disability.

This VA disability rating ranges from 0 to 100% in 10-percent increments, and it is used to calculate the level of compensation the veteran will receive.

You can receive additional monthly compensation if you are severely disabled, have lost a limb, have a spouse who also is disabled or if you have a spouse, dependent child, or dependent parent within your immediate household.

In some cases, a veteran may submit a VA claim related to multiple disabilities. In these cases, the VA will use a combined ratings table to determine a combined disability rating and VA benefit amount that reflects all rated medical conditions.

Combined ratings can be tricky since the percentages are not simply added together. Its intuitive to think that if a veteran has one disability rated at 40% and another rated at 30%, the combined rating would be 70%, but that isnt the case. Instead, the VA will first rank the disabilities in order of severity.

Having Dependents May Impact Your Disability Compensation Payments

How Much Has Federal Spending on VA Disability Changed ...

Veterans who have a disability rating of 30% or higher may receive increased disability compensation payments from the VA. This does not apply to veterans with a disability rating of 20% or lower.

Veterans must add their dependents to their VA disability claim and inform the VA of any changes to dependency status. This is important any time there is a change such as a marriage, divorce, birth, legal adoption, death, minor entering into the majority, a parent becoming a dependent, or other qualifying changes to dependency status.

Children are no longer eligible to be claimed as a dependent once they reach age 18 unless they are still attending school. To continue receiving benefits for your dependent after they reach age 18, the VA requires the veteran to submit supporting documentation proving the child is attending a qualified school.

What You Need To Know About Va Combined Disability Ratings

In cases where the VA must rate a veteran for more than one medical issue, the VA uses a combined ratings table to determine the final percentage.

The VA points out that its disability system is not additive, which the VA official site explains means that if a Veteran has one disability rated 60% and a second disability 20%, the combined rating is not 80%. This is because subsequent disability ratings are applied to an already disabled Veteran, so the 20% disability is applied to a Veteran who is already 60% disabled.

The VA Combined Ratings Table is a tool used by the VA to make the combined rating determination. The table is lengthy and requires each disability to be listed in order of severity and the VA rater follows a procedure using the ratings matched with the table to arrive at the accurate combined disability percentage. The VA official site offers an example of how this calculation is made:

  • A veteran is rated with a 50% disability and is also rated with a different medical condition at 30%
  • According to VA calculations, the combined value will be found to be 65 percent, BUT
  • The 65 percent must be converted to 70 percent to represent the final degree of disability
  • In a different example on the VA official site, a veteran rated with two disabilities at 40% and 20% requires a calculation to arrive at the combined value of 52%
  • The 52% must be converted to the nearest degree divisible by 10, which is 50%.

Veterans County Service Offices

All counties with a population of 200,000 or more have a veterans county service office that is:

  • staffed by at least one full-time employee and
  • report directly to the commissioners court.

In a county with a population of less than 200,000, the commissioners court may maintain and operate a veterans county service office if the commissioners court determines that the office is a public necessity to enable county residents who are veterans to promptly, properly, and rightfully obtain benefits to which they are entitled.
