You can earn up to a certain amount per year without losing your disability benefits. For 2021, this amount is $6,100 . You must contact Canada Pension Plan as soon as you make more than $6,100 .
If you delay in contacting us when you start making over the allowed amount, you might have to pay some money back.

Re-starting disability benefits for the same disability
If you return to work but are unable to continue working because of the same or a related disability, you can ask to have the benefit automatically restarted without going through the usual reapplication process.

Working part-time while on CPP disability
Joseph returned to work on a part time basis in March 2021. He earned $6,170 by June 2021. Joseph must call Service Canada to let them know he has earned $6,100.
Additionally, he needs to tell them:
- the date he returned to work
- the hours he worked per week/month
- his hourly wages
- if the job is full time, part time, seasonal or self employed

There are a number of reasons why Social Security Disability benefits would be revoked after being instated. The most common reasons for a stop in Social Security Disability benefits are improvement of one’s disabling condition, incarceration, or a return to work. What If I Attempt To Return To Work But I End Up Needing To Go Out On Disability Again
If you return to work and are able to perform your regular or customary job for more than 60 days, then your disability benefit period is considered ended. If you stop working again due to disability, you must file a new claim for SDI, and re-establish your eligibility for benefits as of the date of the new claim. If you are eligible for SDI as of the date of your new claim, you are entitled to a new benefit period of up to 52 weeks.
If you return to work for more than 60 days, but do not perform your regular or customary work due to your disability for example, you work only light duty or only part-time you may be able to continue your prior disability claim. You will need to show EDD that you did not perform your regular or customary work when you attempted to return to work.
If you return to work for fewer than 60 days, and stop working due to the same disability, you are considered to be within the same disability benefits period. You may continue receiving benefits under your original claim and the 7-day waiting period required by these claims will be waived.

Contributing Factors When It Comes To How Long It Takes To Get Disability
What factors impact how long it takes to get a Social Security Disability approval? The first thing that will impact how quickly you get a response to your application for Social Security Disability is whether your initial disability claim is approved or denied.
Initial claims usually take 30 to 90 days to process. If you are one of the lucky people who gets approval on their initial claim, it will take you 90 days or less for Social Security Disability approval. If, however, your claim is not approved then at this point you will have to go through the disability appeal process, and that means it will take longer to get your Social Security Disability benefits.
Another factor that will impact how quickly your Social Security Disability application is approved or denied is what medical records are needed to process your claim, and how long it takes your doctors to send in the records that have been requested. If the doctors are taking too long to get your records in, you may be able to speed the process up by getting copies of the records yourself and sending them in with your application.
The state in which you live also plays a part in how long it takes for your Social Security Disability application process to be completed. Some states have more of a backlog than others. For example, someone who lives in the State of Illinois will wait much longer than someone living in the State of Utah.

Claims
Under the legislation the onus is on a person to apply if s/he believes that s/he may have an entitlement to payment. The Disability Allowance claim form DA1 should be completed in full and signed by the claimant. The person should state his/her Personal Public Service Number . If s/he has no PPS no. he/she should apply to their local INTREO Centre and a new PPS no. will be allocated and should be quoted in all future correspondence.
The claimant should forward all relevant documentation as requested. However this may be submitted after the initial claim is made rather than delaying the claim in order to obtain it.
An acknowledgement of each claim is issued via SMS upon receipt of the claim where claimants have provided their mobile number.
Late Claims
The claim should be made within 7 days of the start of entitlement. However, the claim may be backdated for up to 6 months where the person can prove to the satisfaction of the Deciding Officer or Appeals Officer that s/he satisfied the qualifying conditions during that period and that throughout the period of delay there was good cause for delay in making the claim.
Further back-dating may also be possible in certain circumstances:
- where the failure to claim within the prescribed time period arose as a result of false and misleading information being provided by staff of this department to the person or their agent

What If I Dont Have Money In My Base Period Because I Was Unemployed Before I Became Disabled
There are two rules that may help you if you do not have earnings in your base period due to unemployment:
First, if you have an unexpired claim for unemployment insurance benefits when you are seeking SDI, then you may use the base period you used for your unemployment insurance claim.
Second, if you were unemployed during any quarter of your base period meaning out of work for 60 or more days and looking for work you may disregard that quarter and begin your base period three months earlier than the period set forth in the above chart. For each quarter you were unemployed, you may go back another quarter.

First, you must have received your billing notice. The Benefit Overpayment Statement of Amount Due form is a billing notice that is mailed to you each month. If you have not yet received this notice or have lost it, please contact the EDD at 1-877-238-4373.
