Airports And Disabled Parking Permits

New rules for disabled veterans who need an accessible parking spots

Airport parking is complicated enough for non-disabled drivers. Disabled parking at airports takes the difficulty up yet another a notch. Luckily, there are a few things available to disabled drivers that help to make airport parking a little bit easier.

Whether you choose economy long-term parking, short-term parking, or a parking garage, disabled parking at airports should be easy to spot. You simply need to look for the wheelchair symbol, or International Symbol of Access, that will be displayed either on a sign posted at the parking spot or painted on the ground.

Most airports also offer discounted parking to those with disabled parking placards or plates. As long as your disabled parking permit or plate is displayed properly and is current, you can access discounted or even free parking. Thats why its always a good idea to check the airports website before you travel to see if these discounted or free disabled parking services are offered.

Disabled Veteran Free Airport Parking

I read where parking is free for those with a disabled veteran car tag at the Orlando Airport , but it says it is only for a week. Does anyone know how much they charge per day after one week, and if that is a 7 day week? We are flying to California for my daughter’s wedding in late July and will be gone about twelve days.

The law requires the airport to give you one week free. I have parked at MCO for 12 days and 14 and have not been charged. I’m leaving for 2 weeks tomorrow and am hopeful but ready to pay for second week.

I emailed the Orlando International Airport , and this is their response:

“As long as your vehicle displays a Disabled Veteran License plate you may park at the Airport for no charge up to 45 days in the parking garages and 90 in the economy lots. We consider vehicles parked longer as Abandoned Vehicles.

You must enter a ticket only lane and go to a regular cashier lane at the exit. Just inform the cashier that you are not required to pay as you have a DV Plate. The cashier will then call a supervisor to respond to process the transaction at no charge.”

Chris Curry, as president of the Mobile Airport Authority, will walk around the terminals and talk to customers about their experiences.

One recent conversation Curry had with a veteran who lives on the Eastern Shore sparked an idea that, a few years ago, became law in Florida. He hopes its replicated in Alabama: Free airport parking for disabled veterans.

The gentleman was talking about how much he enjoyed flying out of due to its proximity, but that in Florida, hes allowed to park at the airport for free, said Curry, who was once the executive director at Tallahassee International Airport. When I was in Tallahassee, we introduced that before it was put into law in Florida.

Said Curry, It was a reminder that certainly, as an airport, if we can do our part to make lives a little easier for disabled vets, we want to do that.

Parking discount

Curry, himself a veteran of the Air Force, said the free parking plan will be discussed during the Airport Authoritys next meeting on July 31. But Curry said that as the organizations president, he has the authority to institute the parking discount himself and plans to do so.

Disabled Veterans Get Free Parking At Tampa International

Disabled veterans will not have to wait for the Legislature to pass a new law to get free parking at Tampa International Airport.

Airport officials have already changed their policies to now allow any driver with a special disabled veterans license plate issued by the state to park for free up to a week.

The move comes after the Times/Herald Tallahassee Bureau reported that the Florida Legislature was considering a bill to make all airports give disabled veterans free parking, which some airports already provide as a courtesy. Some legislators thought they had already provided that in a law passed earlier this year. But some veterans with the disabled license plate reported that they were still being denied the free parking by airports that were citing a loophole that exempted them from the law. The law only allowed disabled veterans with ramps and lifts to have the free parking. Disabled veterans without that equipment were being charged full price for parking by many airports.

Florida has about 41,000 veterans who have the special disable veteran license plate.

Disabled veterans license plates can only be obtained by drivers if they can prove they have a 100 percent disability designation by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and can show they were honorably discharged.

Disabled parking permits can be used anywhere with available disabled parking, not simply in airports. So, if you and your doctor agree you qualify, then its important to take the right steps to apply for the permit.

You can usually get a disabled parking permit application online or at your local Department of Motor Vehicles . Once you get a form, you simply need to complete it with the help of your doctor, nurse practitioner, or another medical professional to certify your disability before you submit the completed application.

In some states, disability placards and stickers are available for no cost, while some charge a nominal fee. Nearly every state charges for license plates, but there are normally no additional fees associated with disabled license plates on top of what you pay normally to plate your vehicle.

You can get a temporary disabled parking permit for six months or less, too. This is helpful in some cases where the limitations wont be permanent, such as recovery from surgery or pregnancy complications.

Veteran Fights For Free Parking And Win

In Florida the law states that disabled veterans are allowed to park at airports for free. When Lou Hockel, a disabled veteran, caught wind of this law he was excited, and a little skeptical. He was planning on flying out of Tampa International Airport to go see his grandkids, so he called the airport to confirm the free parking.

He didnt get a definitive answer when he called, but he did get an email a few days later. This email was from an attorney representing the airport. Heres what the attorney had to say.

We are not a state agency, county, municipality or any agency thereof and thus we are not subject to the language you cited from Florida Statute 320.084.

Hockel, a bit frustrated by this email, started calling other airports in Florida to see what their policy is on free parking for disabled veterans. As it turns out, every airport he called said they comply with the law and allow disabled veterans to park for free.

Eventually, Hockel got in contact with Florida State Senator Nancy Detert. Together they were able to write a new law that cleared up any confusion surrounding the old law. This new law was passed in state Congress and now just needs the Governors signature.

Austin Airport Changes Disabled Vet Parking

Veterans note the Austin airport change to free parking just in time for the holidays. There was no advance warning on the Austin airport home page, newspapers, TV or radio.

Upon leaving the airport I was told I owed $115 and handed a card that said complimentary parking for military disabled veteran license plates changed effective Nov. 1. Please visit www.abia.org for information. I was told there is a sign where you get your ticket. I never saw this sign since it was 4 a.m. and the only signs were the construction signs and orange cones.

DFW Airport has not changed the complimentary parking benefits. Thank you DFW.

Vehicles with disabled veteran designation may receive up to five days complimentary parking. All other recognized meritorious plates and disabled veteran will receive complimentary parking in surface lots only. Should you require additional assistance while utilizing the surface lots at ABIA, do not hesitate to contact the parking operation at 512-530-3300. Staff is available for assistance 24 hours a day.

Please note: Complimentary parking for disabled veterans is not applicable to Valet Parking Services, Hourly Parking Services on the garage or surface lots where fee collection is automated. The eligible license plate must be on the vehicle exiting the parking operation to receive complimentary parking. Vehicles occupying more than one space will be charged the daily maximum for each space used.

Free Parking For Disabled Vets At Florida Airports

Governor Rick Scott signed a bill into law last week that gives disabled veterans free parking at all Florida airports. This is actually the second go round at this legislation, as a similar bill was adopted in 2015 however it only granted free parking to veterans that drive adapted vehicles.

To remedy that situation State Senator Nancy Detert introduced SB 222, that requires airports to provide free parking to all vehicles that display a disabled veterans license plate. In order to obtain a disabled veterans license plate, drivers must have a 100 percent disability designation by the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and have an honorable discharge from the military.

As for non-veterans who are disabled, well you still have to drive an adapted vehicle in order to qualify for free airport parking. But on the plus side, you also get free parking at cruise ship terminals. For the details about that, check out my Emerging Horizons article at .

News Article: Florida Passes Airport Parking Legislation For Veterans

100% Disabled Veterans in Florida Unknown Benefit

The Florida Legislature, on Feb. 24, passed legislation that will allow disabled veterans to park at all airports in the state free of charge, reported the Miami Herald. The legislation passed unanimously and will soon cross the desk of Gov. Rick Scott. Ex-servicemembers who wish to take advantage this proposed law would have to acquire special-issue disabled veteran license plates. Additionally, the parking would only be free for week-long time spans. This is the legislature’s second attempt to give local veterans free parking at local airports.

“It’s just another bill to make Florida the friendliest state in the nation for veterans,” State Rep. Ken Roberson, R-Port Charlotte, one of the 115 legislators who passed the legislation, said in an interview with the Herald.

According to the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, 1.6 million veterans live in the state. It is also home to approximately 41,000 former military members with disabled veteran license plates.

Taking another shotLast year, Gov. Scott signed into law a bill that ostensibly granted ex-servicemembers free parking privileges at metered parking lots throughout the county, reported the Tampa Bay Times. However, area airports, all of which are designated independent districts and invulnerable to local law, refused to allow veterans to park for free. Sarasota County Marine veteran Lou Hockel experienced this firsthand when he attempted to park free of charge at Tampa International Airport.
