Five New Grants and Loans For Veteran Owned Small Businesses and Start-ups September 2021

Recently, USDA announced a new partnership with Texas A& Ms AgriLife Extension Service that will help veterans interested in USDA farm ownership loans get the training they need to qualify. Typically, qualifying loan applicants must participate in the business operations of a farm for at least three years during a 10-year period. Through this project, participants receive intensified production and financial management training that they can combine with previous military leadership or management experience to satisfy this requirement in less time.

This enhanced farm loan opportunity is part of Texas A& M AgriLife Extension Services Battleground to Breaking Ground program, which has helped more than 900 veterans and beginning farmers and ranchers with their agribusiness.

USDA loan programs are designed to help family farmers and ranchers start, purchase or expand their farming operation. In many cases, beginning farmers need support to qualify for commercial credit. Other producers have suffered financial setbacks from natural disasters, or need additional resources to establish and maintain profitable farming operations. No matter your individual story, USDA is here to help you succeed.

Erin and her veteran husband, John Kimbrough, worked with USDA for a microloan, a conservation plan and technical assistance to improve their farm.

How The Fellowship Fund Works

The application for the Farmer Veteran Fellowship Fund opens once per year at which time eligible veterans are given no less than four weeks to submit a fully completed application.

Once the application period ends, an advisory panel of agricultural industry professionals convenes to review submissions. The application review process can take up to two months with awardees usually being notified in the Spring.

Farmer veterans who are selected as Fellowship recipients have six months to use their award.

Upon notification of their award, Fellowship recipients may begin seeking out third-party vendors to make their purchase. All third-party vendors must be approved by the Fellowship Fund manager prior to purchase.

After an approved third-party vendor has been selected, the Fellowship Fund manager makes the payment on the farmer veterans behalf.

Gov Wolf Announces Availability Of $10000 Grants For Farmer

Governor Tom Wolf announced that Pennsylvanias farmer-veterans have the opportunity to apply for grants of up to $10,000 to meet their agricultural business needs.

This grant program is designed to recognize the great commitment of Pennsylvanias farmer-veterans: to love and defend their country and also to serve humanity by growing the food that we all need to survive, said Gov. Wolf. When I created the Pennsylvania Farm Bill we included funding dedicated to this group of Pennsylvanians. Its a thank you for their service and a commitment to better serving their needs as they serve ours.

Through Gov. Wolfs PA Farm Bill, the Department of Agriculture has awarded $200,000 to two veterans service organizations which will offer the farmer-veteran grants. Grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded for various agricultural business needs ranging from food safety and biosecurity planning, to equipment, marketing, or working capital.

Pennsylvanias veterans spent their military career protecting and serving others. When returning to civilian life, they bring critical skillsets and a commitment to service with them, said Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding. We have worked hard to ensure that everyone who wants to be a part of agriculture has the opportunity to contribute without barriers. These grants are a down payment on the success of farmer-veterans in the industry, for the success of Pennsylvania.

Chris purchased the family farm in Bastrop County, Texas, while actively serving in the U.S. military. In the beginning, he spent backbreaking hours in the Texas heat clearing brush by hand. Then he found a USDA program that provided technical and financial assistance to help him with the process.

Veteran Doug Havemann and his wife Melissa own Mesquite Field Farm in Nixon, Texas. They developed a conservation plan for their beef cattle operation using technical assistance provided by USDA.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a larger percent of veterans live in rural America than members of the general public. At USDA, we want to ensure that veterans looking to return to the family farm and those starting a new farming career have the tools and opportunities needed to succeed.

As you know, agricultural farming is an important aspect of a country, including the United States. This field requires a lot of workforce, who are skillful and diligent.

That is why the government is empowering the veterans to try farming as their new career path after they have finished their time in the military. One program that supports military veterans and socially disadvantaged farmers is the Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers and Veteran Farmers and Ranchers Program, which is commonly known as the 2501 program, coming from the mutual effort from the Office of Advocacy and Outreach and the United States Department of Agriculture .
