What We Mean By Disability
The definition of disability under Social Security is different than other programs. Social Security pays only for total disability. No benefits are payable for partial disability or for short-term disability.
We consider you disabled under Social Security rules if all of the following are true:
- You cannot do work that you did before because of your medical condition.
- You cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition.
- Your disability has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year or to result in death.
This is a strict definition of disability. Social Security program rules assume that working families have access to other resources to provide support during periods of short-term disabilities, including workers compensation, insurance, savings, and investments.
Applying For Disability Benefits
How You Can Apply for Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income benefits:
In Person: Applications for Social Security Disability Insurance are filed with your nearest local Social Security office. Find the Social Security office that serves your area. You can make an appointment at any local office by calling Social Security’s toll-free number, 772-1213, 24 hours a day. If you are hearing impaired, please call the toll-free TTY number, 325-0778, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
Online: You can apply online for SSDI benefits. For a direct link to information on applying online for SSDI benefits. Currently applications for SSI benefits cannot be completed online, but you can access and complete some of the forms necessary for the application process online.

How Does It Work
- Choose the amount you want and add optional benefits to customize your coverage.
- Pay your monthly premium.
- File a claim if you become disabled.
- Receive your monthly payments when the waiting period ends. The waiting period is the number of days from the date youre disabled until the benefit start date.
- Your payments stop when your benefit period ends or you return to work.

Appealing Denied Social Security Disability Application
Its common for applicants to be denied. In fact, only about 1 in 3 applicants are initially approved for SSDI benefits. The two main reasons for denial are usually a lack of work credits, or that applicants do not meet the criteria for disability.
If you have been turned down, you do have the right to go through a Social Security Disability appeal process. Either you or your designated representative can file a Request for Reconsideration. Your initial appeal will then be turned over to Disability Determination Services, who will thoroughly review your file.
If you are denied again, you can proceed to the next level of appeal which is to appear in front of an Administrative Law Judge. An Administrative Law Judge will conduct a hearing in which all of your medical records and testimony will be heard before the judge renders a decision in the form of a written notice.
If you are still denied benefits, then you have a final appeal step you can take: filing a lawsuit in U.S. district court. You will need an attorney for this step if you havent already retained one. This can be an expensive and time consuming option, and as a result, less than 1% of disability claimants take their cases to this level.
Indiana Disability Determination Bureau
Title II covers workers who have established eligibility through prior work and Title XVI has a needs-based income and resource eligibility requirement. The purpose of these programs is to identify people who have disabilities that preclude the ability to work, or for children, preclude the ability to fully participate in learning activities. These programs have two desired outcomes. The first desired outcome is to correctly identify disabled adults and children. The second desired outcome is to have adults with potential referred to a public or private Vocational Rehabilitation Services, through the Social Security Administrations Ticket to Work program.
In order to accomplish its mission, the Indiana DDB must work closely with the 26 local SSA Field Offices throughout Indiana, and Social Security Administration at the regional and national levels. The DDB must follow the statutory definition of disability in making its medical determinations.

Long Term Care Insurance

Fill out the forms and gather all the supporting information and documents. Most disability programs have 2-3 forms to be filled out when making a disability claim. You fill one of the forms out. Usually, another form is a medical report for your doctor to fill out. With some disability plans short- and long-term disability, workers compensation there is also a form your employer needs to fill out.It is your responsibility to make sure the forms are filled out properly. Its very important that you review both your doctors report and the employers form for accuracy after they are filled out. Your doctor may inadvertently forget to mention one of your medical conditions your employer may give an inaccurate or incomplete description of your work duties.We see many people do a very poor job when making a disability claim. This is how legitimate disability claims get denied. The claim representative making a decision to approve or reject your application do so based on the qualify of the information and documents you have given, and not based on the reality of your situation as you know it.
You should read that sentence again. If you have done a poor job putting together your application, its very likely your claim will be denied, no matter how legitimate your disability.

The State of California requires all employees to pay into its short-term disability insurance program through payroll deductions. When employees become unable to work due to disability, they can collect weekly benefits from the program until they are either ready to go back to work or the benefits expire. The program is administered by California’s Employment Development Department .
Apply For A Visitor Accessible Parking Permit
ServiceOntario centres may issue a visitor permit for general use to a visitor in Ontario. You must prove that you hold a valid permit in your home jurisdiction. This may include:
- accessible parking permit from your home jurisdiction
- number plate or other marker or device bearing the international symbol of access for persons with a disability, or
- other evidence that you are from another jurisdiction and have a disability
Visitors to Ontario who are applying for a visitors accessible parking permit must provide the following acceptable proof:
- one out-of-province/country government- issued document bearing the name and address of the applicant plus one of the following:
- healthcare practitioners certificate or letter
- medical insurance document
- another appropriate medical document
The visitor permit will be valid for up to 6 months. A sponsor may apply for a permit in advance of the visitors trip to Ontario.

The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs are the largest of several Federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities. Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefits
The Canada Pension Plan provides monthly payments to people who contribute to the plan during their working years.
You may be eligible for CPP disability benefits if:
- you contributed to the CPP for a certain number of years
- you’re under 65 years old
- you have a severe and prolonged mental or physical disability
- your disability prevents you from working on a regular basis
The benefits include payments to children of a person with a disability.
Apply as early as possible if you think you’re eligible for CPP disability benefits. Quebec residents may be eligible for a similar program called the Quebec Pension Plan . It may take several months to process your application.
If you applied for CPP or QPP disability benefits and were told that you’re not eligible, you can ask to have your application reviewed or considered again.
Once you reach age 65, your CPP disability benefit will automatically change to regular CPP payments. Your regular CPP payments may be less than the CPP disability payments you got before.

Benefits For A Disabled Child
A child under age 18 may be disabled, but we dont need to consider the childs disability when deciding if he or she qualifies for benefits as a dependent. The childs benefits normally stop at age 18 unless he or she is a full-time student in an elementary or high school or is disabled.
Children who were receiving benefits as a minor child on a parents Social Security record may be eligible to continue receiving benefits on that parents record upon reaching age 18 if they are disabled.

You will be assigned an EDD Customer Account Number once you complete the registration process. You will also receive a registration confirmation by email and mail.

Make Sure Your Doctor Supports You
It is critical that you have your doctors support before you try to go on sick leave and apply for disability benefits. To be blunt: making a disability claim without your doctors support is a waste of time and can cause a lot of problems.Without your doctors support, your employer will not recognize your absence from work as being an approved sick leave.
