Do Treatment Options Differ For Aspergers And Autism

Aspergers syndrome

Neither what was previously diagnosed as Aspergers nor autism is a medical condition that needs to be treated.

Those diagnosed with autism are considered neurodivergent. Autistic behaviors arent considered whats socially typical. But that doesnt mean that autism indicates theres anything wrong with you.

Whats most important is that you or someone in your life whos been diagnosed with autism know that theyre loved, accepted, and supported by the people around them.

Not everyone in the autism community agrees that autistic people dont need medical treatment.

Theres an ongoing debate between those who see autism as a disability that needs medical treatment and those who see autism treatment in the form of securing disability rights, like fair employment practices and healthcare coverage.

The Benefits Of An Asperger Syndrome Diagnosis

Some people see a formal diagnosis as an unhelpful label, but for many, getting a thorough assessment and diagnosis may be helpful because:

  • it helps people with Asperger syndrome to understand why they may experience certain difficulties and what they can do about them
  • it allows people to access services and support.

Different Names And Terms For Autism

Over the years, different diagnostic labels have been used, such as: autism, Autism Spectrum Disorder , Autism Spectrum Condition , classic autism, Kanner autism, pervasive developmental disorder , high-functioning autism , Asperger syndrome and Pathological Demand Avoidance . This reflects the different diagnostic manuals and tools used, and the different autism profiles presented by individuals.Because of recent and upcoming changes to the main diagnostic manuals,‘Autism Spectrum Disorder’ is now likely to become the most commonly given diagnostic term. Asperger syndrome remains a useful profile for many diagnosticians and professionals.

How Does Asperger Syndrome Impact On Study

Students with AS may have difficulty with the elements of a course that involve interacting with other people, in particular, supervisions and other discussion activities and any paired work. They may find it difficult to know how and when to ask questions and may come across as abrupt when it is not their intention. Such students are likely to make a literal interpretation of any instructions, and this literal approach means they may have difficulty differentiating between core and peripheral information .

Man With Autism And Learning Disability Living In Hospital For Over Than 20 Years

The parents of Tony Hickmott, 44, who has spent 20 years of his life held at a secure unit hospital in the UK, say that their lives have been ‘ruined’ and that he ‘deserves to come home’

A man with autism and learning disability has been living in a hospital for over 20 years despite promises of being released throughout the years.

Tony Hickmott, now 44 was supposed to be released eight years ago, yet he remains in hospital care.

Mr Hickmott, from Brighton, is thought to be one of the longest-held patients in a secure unit in the UK.

His parents Pam, 78, and Roy, 81 were finally able to tell Tony’s story after a gagging order was overturned by Sky News and the BBC.

They are fighting for him to be able to live in the community with his own carers, something all of the agencies involved in his care agree is the best thing for him.

However, authorities claim that they are unable to find him somewhere suitable to live.

Mum Pam said: “It’s ruined our lives. Absolutely ruined our lives, Tony’s life. He’s spent half of his life in an institution.

She added: “I mean, my son isn’t dangerous, he’s never hurt anybody. Tony deserves to come home because that’s all he lives for.”

Pam says that the hospital ‘isn’t the right place for him’, and that he son is being kept in a unit that is similar to a ‘lock and key.’

In 2019, the Court of Protection began to look for somewhere for Tony to live in the community, but this has not materialised leaving Pam and Roy ‘heartbroken’.

Asperger’s Syndrome Is No Longer An Official Diagnosis

Steven Gans, MD, is board-certified in psychiatry and is an active supervisor, teacher, and mentor at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Asperger’s syndrome, also known as Asperger’s disorder or simply Asperger’s, is a developmental disorder affecting social skills and interactions and involving repetitive patterns of behavior. It was previously used as a diagnosis at the highest-functioning end of the autism spectrum.

Once regarded as one of the distinct types of autism, Asperger’s syndrome was retired in 2013 with the publication of the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders . It is no longer used by clinicians as an official diagnosis.

Even so, the term is still used in some circumstances and by some practitioners, although people who were once regarded as having Asperger’s syndrome would today be diagnosed as having level one autism spectrum disorder per the revisions in the DSM-5.

Assessment Of Nvld Compared With Assessment Of Ad

In my practice I have seen a number of children with AD who would not meet the criteria for NVLD in any existing research studies. If these children had participated in the Yale study mentioned earlier in this article, they would probably have been in the 20% of the AD children who did not meet the NVLD criteria. It is possible that the AD children in that 20% may have had very high visual spatial scores, thus masking their over-attention to detail in problem solving. For example, they may have scored very high on the Block Design subtest of the IQ measure with little or no appreciation of the gestalt. Their considerable skill and speed at analyzing detail would have allowed them to use this inefficient strategy effectively. With these very bright children, it may be that the tests are not sufficiently sensitive to discern a pattern of NVLD. On the other hand, some children with AD show diffuse difficulties in the language and attention domain, but may not exhibit the pronounced discrepancies associated with NVLD. Nonetheless, they may still struggle with the cognitive difficulties of NVLD. Conversely, a child meeting the criteria for NVLD, may not meet the criteria for AD, even though subtle characteristics of the disorder may be present.

Autism Is Not An Illness

Being autistic does not mean you have an illness or disease. It means your brain works in a different way from other people.

It’s something you’re born with or first appears when you’re very young.

If you’re autistic, you’re autistic your whole life.

Autism is not a medical condition with treatments or a “cure”. But some people need support to help them with certain things.

Exercise For Asperger Syndrome

What Is Asperger

Regular exercise is important for everybody and people with Asperger syndrome can benefit from a greater sense of self-esteem and wellbeing through exercise. Some people may prefer individual sports or exercise as opposed to team games because working with others in this environment may be challenging for them. Everybody is different though. Exercise does not have to be strict or comprised of set activities simply running around and keeping active is still worthwhile exercise.

Motor And Sensory Perception

Individuals with Asperger syndrome may have signs or symptoms that are independent of the diagnosis but can affect the individual or the family. These include differences in perception and problems with motor skills, sleep, and emotions.

Individuals with AS often have excellent auditory and visual perception. Children with ASD often demonstrate enhanced perception of small changes in patterns such as arrangements of objects or well-known images typically this is domain-specific and involves processing of fine-grained features. Conversely, compared with individuals with high-functioning autism, individuals with AS have deficits in some tasks involving visual-spatial perception, auditory perception, or visual memory. Many accounts of individuals with AS and ASD report other unusual sensory and perceptual skills and experiences. They may be unusually sensitive or insensitive to sound, light, and other stimuli these sensory responses are found in other developmental disorders and are not specific to AS or to ASD. There is little support for increased fight-or-flight response or failure of habituation in autism there is more evidence of decreased responsiveness to sensory stimuli, although several studies show no differences.

The Problematic History Of Hans Asperger

Asperger syndrome shares its name with Hans Asperger, a prominent figure in the early research into autism who worked as a paediatrician in Austria in the 20th century, including during the time of the Nazis. An eight-year study into his relationship with the Nazi regime was published in 2018, concluding that he assisted in their euthanasia programme. This provoked a big debate among autistic people and their family members, particularly those who identify with the term Asperger. We are listening closely to the response to this news so we can continue to make sure the language we use to describe autism reflects the preferences of autistic people and their families.

When you meet someone who has Asperger’s syndrome, you might notice two things right off. They’re just as smart as other folks, but they have more trouble with social skills. They also tend to have an obsessive focus on one topic or perform the same behaviors again and again.

Doctors used to think of Asperger’s as a separate condition. But in 2013, the newest edition of the standard book that mental health experts use, called The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , changed how it’s classified.

Today, Asperger’s syndrome is technically no longer a diagnosis on its own. It is now part of a broader category called autism spectrum disorder . This group of related disorders shares some symptoms. Even so, lots of people still use the term Asperger’s.

The condition is what doctors call a “high-functioning” type of ASD. This means the symptoms are less severe than other kinds of autism spectrum disorders.

The DSM-5 also includes a new diagnosis, called social pragmatic communication disorder, which has some symptoms that overlap with Asperger’s. Doctors use it to describe people who have trouble talking and writing, but have normal intelligence.

Do People With Asperger’s Have Empathy

Ablevision visits the Aspergers Association of New England

Contrary to popular belief, people with Asperger’s do have empathy. They care about how others are thinking and feeling but they often have difficulty putting themselves in other people’s shoes. This is a skill that can be learned over time.

Trouble picking up how others are thinking or feeling via tone of voice or body language can make people with Asperger’s appear less than empathetic when they don’t mean to be.

The autism community talks about the double bind empathy problem. This is where neurotypicals can seem less than empathetic – by failing to take into account how people with autism see the world. They might ignore the fact that autistic people have a tendency to take things literally, asking someone to take a seat rather than sit down.

What Is Pathological Demand Avoidance

Pathological Demand Avoidance is a form of autism which may also affect the way a person communicates and relates to other people.

People with PDA may experience challenges such as specific learning difficulties, but their central difficulty is that they are driven to avoid everyday demands and expectations to an extreme extent. This avoidance is rooted in an anxiety-based need to be in control.

What Is The Autistic Spectrum

Most autistic people perceive the world and interact with others very differently. Classified as a spectrum condition, this means that autism affects people in many different ways. Overall, the three most common characteristics of autism are:

  • difficulty with social communication & interaction
  • repetitive behaviour, routines and activities
  • sensory sensitivities

People on the autistic spectrum can be more prone to other health issues and conditions, including:

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Social Communication Disorder
  • Visual impairment

The National Autistic Society has a comprehensive page on autistic behaviour, that those on the spectrum, family members and employers may find useful.

About Autism Spectrum Disorder

Not all autistic children exhibit the same signs of autism or experience these signs to the same degree.

Thats why autism is considered to be on a spectrum. Theres a wide range of behaviors and experiences that are considered to fall under the umbrella of an autism diagnosis.

Heres a brief overview of behaviors that may cause someone to be diagnosed with autism:

  • differences in processing sensory experiences, like touch or sound, from those who are considered neurotypical
  • differences in learning styles and problem-solving approaches, like quickly learning complex or difficult topics but having difficulty mastering physical tasks or conversational turn-taking
  • deep, sustained special interests in specific topics
  • repetitive movements or behaviors , like flapping hands or rocking back and forth
  • strong desire to maintain routines or establishing order, like following the same schedule each day or organizing personal belongings a certain way
  • difficulty processing and producing verbal or nonverbal communication, like having trouble expressing thoughts in words or displaying emotions outwardly
  • difficulty processing or participating in neurotypical social interactive contexts, like by greeting someone back whos greeted them

Disability Tax Benefits For Aspergerâs Syndrome

There are people with Asperger’s who have a high IQ and others who don’t. A person on the spectrum could be better at maths than a neurotypical but some even have dyscalculia, a specific difficulty with numbers.

The amazing abilities that some people like Raymond from the film Rain Man have with maths and dates are because of savant syndrome – a separate condition from Asperger’s. Some people on the spectrum may have it, but not all.

It is not unusual for someone on the autism spectrum to have a co-occurring condition. These range from Coeliac disease and other digestive problems, to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder . There is no definitive answer to why this is the case.

How Asperger Syndrome Is Diagnosed

The characteristics of Asperger syndrome vary from one person to another, although there are some key traits that autistic people share. These are:

  • persistent difficulties with or differences in social communication and social interaction
  • restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviours, activities or interests since early childhood, to the extent that these impact negatively on day to day life.

The diagnosis process usually involves a multi-disciplinary diagnostic team – often including a speech and language therapist, paediatrician, psychiatrist and/or psychologist.Because Asperger syndrome varies widely from person to person, making a diagnosis can be difficult. It is often diagnosed later in children than autism and sometimes symptoms may not be recognised and diagnosed until adulthood.
