% Disabled Versus 100% Service
There IS a difference between a 100% service-connected disability rating and a 100% permanent and total disability. The easiest way to tell them apart? The VA does not simply issue a 100% disability rating and leave things there.
Any disability that has a chance to improve may still disable the veteran at such a level as to warrant A 100% total rating. But if the VA does not declare you PERMANENTLY disabled, that 100% total rating is subject to review.

Other Benefits Related To Va Disability
For the sake of completeness, there are other types of monetary benefits that may come into play for the families of Veterans, especially those that died from a service-related injury or illness or a service member that died in the line of duty and left a surviving spouse, parents, or children. These benefits are known as VA Dependency and Indemnity Compensation.
Qualifications and eligibility differ, as do compensation rates, in comparison to the way the VA determines whether a Veteran is qualified to receive disability compensation including requirements for spouses to have been married to the Veteran for specific amounts of time, for the parents of the Veteran to have an income level below a specific amount, and for a child to be unmarried, under a certain age, and not included on a surviving spouses compensation.
Monthly compensation rates vary as well, with a single spouse receiving $1,340.14 a month or a single child with no surviving spouse receiving $565.84 surviving parent rates are much lower in comparison. Spouses with disabilities of their own, spouses who were married to their totally disabled Veterans partners at least 8 years prior to the Veterans death, or who have 1 or more children under the age of 18 qualify for additional funds.

Yes. The threshhold of a 60% rating for at least one service-connected disability is not the only way to potentially become eligible for TDIU. Veterans with a combined VA rating of 70% who have at least one rating of 40% can also apply for TDIU.
So, VA allows you to apply for TDIU if you have one very severe service-connected disability. It also lets you apply if you have several service connected disaiblities and one of them is pretty severe.
The thought here by VA seems to be the same. One severe disability may make it very difficult for you to work, but one fairly severe disability combined with several more minor disabilities may also prevent you from working.

If you have a 30% disability rating or higher and you are also supporting qualified dependents such as a spouse, child, or parent, you may be eligible to receive a higher VA disability payment.
If your disability rating is 20% or lower, changes in your family status should not affect your VA disability payment rates.
The VA will not know when there is a change in your family status, so you will need to inform them immediately when something changes, like a birth, wedding, a parent moving in with you, divorce, a child coming of age, or the death of a qualified dependent.
Inform the VA of a change as soon as possible.
