I appreciate the good-faith spirit that has characterized the bipartisan negotiations this past week. But the American people cannot feed their families or pay their bills with Congresss good-faith discussions. They need us to act. We need to conclude talks and land this plane.

Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, wrote on Twitter on December 19 that it was time to land this plane.

I appreciate the good-faith spirit that has characterized the bipartisan negotiations this past week. But the American people cannot feed their families or pay their bills with Congresss good-faith discussions. They need us to act. We need to conclude talks and land this plane, McConnell wrote of the overall stimulus relief plan.

Millions Remain Waiting For Money

Where

But nearly 30 million Social Security and Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries are waiting to get money through their Economic Impact Payments, according to a letter sent by leaders on the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday.

Because SSA has inexplicably not sent the necessary payment files to the Internal Revenue Service, tens of millions of beneficiaries have yet to receive their desperately needed EIPs, according to Chairman Richard Neal, a Massachusetts Democrat, and oversight subcommittee chairman Bill Pascrell Jr., a New Jersey Democrat, and others.

Wednesdays letter followed another scathing commentary Monday when Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee criticized both the commissioners of the IRS and the Social Security Administration about the handling of the latest stimulus rollout.

Some of our most vulnerable seniors and persons with disabilities, including veterans who served our country with honor, are unable to pay for basic necessities while they wait for their overdue payments, according to the letter signed by Neal, Pascrell Jr. and others.

The letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig and Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul expressed alarm that most Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Railroad Retirement Board and Veterans Affairs beneficiaries who are not required to file a tax return had not yet received their payments.

Third Stimulus Checks And Ssi: What It Means For Social Security Recipients

ST. LOUIS The U.S. Treasury has started sending out $1,400 payments as part of the recently passed American Rescue Plan but what does that mean for people on Social Security and when will SSI recipients receive their stimulus check?

According to the IRS, the third round of economic stimulus, known to the Treasury as EIP3, will be sent to people who didnt file a return but receive Social Security retirement, survivor or disability benefits , Railroad Retirement benefits, Supplemental Security Income or Veterans Affairs benefits. This is similar to the first and second rounds of Economic Impact Payments, often referred to as EIP1 and EIP2.

The IRS has not confirmed the official payment date. Social Security recipients will get the payment the same way they would normally receive Social Security benefits.

For those who received EIP1 or EIP2 but dont receive a payment via direct deposit, they will generally receive a check or, in some instances, a prepaid debit card . A payment will not be added to an existing EIP card mailed for the first or second round of stimulus payments, the IRS says.

While the payment date for many recipients was March 18, a specific date for Social Security recipients has not been confirmed.

Whats Going On With Direct Express

Many people who receive federal benefits get monthly payments on existing prepaid debit cards through Direct Express.

But the Direct Express site only noted on March 23: According to the IRS, updates on the timing of Economic Impact Payments for federal beneficiaries are expected soon. This includes information for Direct Express cardholders who didnt file a tax return in 2019 or 2020. Updates will be posted on IRS.gov as soon as possible.

The Direct Express program provides 4.5 million Americans the majority of whom do not have a bank account with a prepaid debit card to receive their monthly Social Security or veterans benefit payments. The expectation is that the IRS would put those stimulus payments automatically on existing Direct Express cards.

The IRS is rolling out the stimulus payments in batches including by direct deposit, as well as mailing paper checks and plastic prepaid debit cards.

Many people who received their money already had filed tax returns, as they made enough money to be required to file a return.

The second batch of payments includes about 17 million direct deposit payments, which were officially available Wednesday, that totaled more than $38 billion.

Those bringing home better than average paychecks wont get money this time around, though.

For example, a married couple filing a joint return wont receive the third payment if their adjusted gross income exceeds $160,000.

Look Up Your Golden State Stimulus Amount

However, the state delayed clarifying what kinds of income made people eligible for the stimulus, confusing many Californians on fixed incomes.

Only in late July did the state tax agency update its webpage to clarify that income from various public assistance programs Social Security, disability insurance and veterans disability benefits didnt count.

That leaves out Crystal Vazquez, 64, who lives in a trailer in Prunedale, near Salinas. She said she cant afford any other housing on her disability benefits of less than $1,400 per month, and her bad back prevents her from working regularly.

She used the federal stimulus checks to remodel her Airstreams kitchen and repaint the interior. With the state stimulus she planned to build an L-shaped couch so that her family could be more comfortable when they visit.

Crystal Vazquez, 64, who lives in a trailer near Salinas and isnt eligible for the stimulus

Scouring state websites, she concluded that disability income didnt qualify her for the stimulus. In March, Vazquez tried filing a tax return for $240 she had earned in 2020. But she says she never received the $600, which she still doesnt understand. She repeatedly called the state tax agency, but never got through to a person.

If Youre Still Missing Money From The First Two Stimulus Checks And Dont File Taxes Heres What Youll Have To Do

According to the IRS, people who receive Social Security retirement, SSDI, SSI and Railroad Retirement benefits, as well as Veterans Affairs beneficiaries, were automatically eligible for the first two stimulus payments. If you receive these federal benefits as your only form of income, you werent required to file a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019. Under the CARES Act passed in March 2020, you should have received a stimulus check automatically .

If that money didnt arrive, its possible you might have had a payment garnished for child support or to pay a specific kind of creditor, but the rules changed with a second check. However, an IRS error could also be one potential culprit, or that the IRS needed more information about your eligibility.

The IRS said you can create and then check an IRS account to see more information on the first two payments.

A Fourth Round Of Stimulus Payments Was Sent To Eligible Social Security Beneficiaries In Early April

Social Security beneficiaries who didnt file a 2020 or 2019 tax return and didnt use the Non-Filers tool last year received a payment from the IRS.

More than 19 million payments, totaling more than $26 billion, went to these beneficiaries, including Social Security retirement, survivor or disability beneficiaries, according to the IRS.

The fourth batch of payments also included more than 1 million plus-up payments worth more than $2 billion for people who were eligible for additional money now that their 2020 tax returns have been processed.

Ssi And Ssdi: The Third Stimulus Payment Eligibility Requirements

In the just-approved American Rescue Plan, people who receive SSI and SSDI will once again automatically qualify to receive a third stimulus check, for $1,400, as they did for the first and second round of payments.

For the first two rounds, those individuals were eligible so long as they had a Social Security number and werent claimed as a dependent on someone elses tax return, and so long as their household income didnt exceed the threshold set .

The new bill that authorized the third check expands stimulus payment eligibility to dependents of all ages, including young adults age 17 to 24 and older adult dependents. It also increases the amount set aside for those dependents to $1,400 each. Another change: This time around, the checks will be more targeted than they were in the first two rounds, meaning that single taxpayers who earn $75,000 or less per year will be eligible for the full amount, while those who earn more than $80,000 per year wont get any money. That means some families could get more money, while others could get less or none at all.

Those receiving Railroad Retirement and Veterans Affairs benefits also automatically qualify for a payment, as they did in the first and second round, the IRS said.

Amount Of Your Third Stimulus Check

Every eligible American will receive a $1,400 third stimulus check base amount. The base amount jumps to $2,800 for married couples filing a joint tax return. You also get an extra $1,400 for each dependent in your family .

Not everyone will receive the full amount, though. As with the first two stimulus payments, third-round stimulus checks will be reduced potentially to zero for people reporting an adjusted gross income above a certain amount on their latest tax return. If you filed your most recent tax return as a single filer, your third stimulus check will be phased-out if your AGI is $75,000 or more. That threshold jumps to $112,500 for head-of-household filers, and to $150,000 for married couples filing a joint return. Third-round stimulus checks will be completely phased out for single filers with an AGI above $80,000, head-of-household filers with an AGI over $120,000, and joint filers with an AGI exceeding $160,000.

What If I Owe Child Support Payments Back Taxes Money To Creditors Or Debt Collectors Or Federal Or State Debt

Both the first and second stimulus check cannot be reduced to pay any federal or state debts. Unlike the first stimulus check, your second stimulus check cannot be reduced if you owe past-due child support payments and is protected from garnishment by creditors and debt collectors.

If you use direct deposit and owe your bank overdraft fees, the bank may deduct these from your payment.

If you are claiming the payments as part of your 2020 tax refund , the payments are no longer protected from past-due child support payments, back taxes, creditor and debt collectors, and other federal or state debt that you owe . In other words, if you receive your first and second stimulus checks as part of your tax refund instead of direct checks, it may be reduced.

    ‘payment Status Not Available’

Does social security, disability affect stimulus payment?

If you are getting “Payment Status Not Available” from the IRS stimulus check tracker — don’t be alarmed.

According to the IRS, if you receive that message it can mean one of three things:

    • You are not eligible for the payment.
    • The payment has yet to be processed
    • The IRS doesn’t have enough information to issue the payment to you

The agency said it will continue to issue the 2021 Economic Impact Payments throughout 2021.
