Disability employment statistics indicate that 17.9% of people with disabilities were employed in 2020, down from 19.3% in 2019. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the unemployment rates for people with disabilities increased from 2019. Namely, according to the US disability statistics of 2020, the rate increased to 12.6%. In comparison, the unemployment rate for persons without disabilities rose to 7.9% in 2020.

Nearly Half Of Canadians Believe In A Hiring Bias Against Disabled People

Could hiding a disability from a propsective employer boost a candidate’s chances of getting hired? A 2012 BMO study suggests that almost half of Canadians believe that could be the case, with 48 per cent of all respondents saying that they believe candidates could be more likely to climb the corporate ladder if they kept their disability under wraps.

Who Does Not Travel And Why

The NHTS asks people to record their travel for a single day. Over one-third of people age 18 to 64 with disabilities made zero trips on the survey day versus 13.4 percent of people without disabilities. The percentage increases to 37.3 percent for rural residents with disabilities versus 16.0 percent for rural residents without disabilities.

People may choose not to travel on a survey day for many reasons, but some stay home because they have no choice. Over one-third of people with disabilities who made zero trips say that they stayed home because they have disabilities or are housebound. That percentage translates to an estimated 1.7 million Americans age 18 to 64 with disabilities who do not leave their homes. They account for 46.1 percent of the 3.6 million Americans with disabilities who do not leave their homes.

Disabled Workers Are Still Slightly More Likely To Be Self

The gap between the proportion of disabled and non-disabled workers who are self-employed has been closing for a number of years. In 2013/14 the proportion of disabled workers who were self-employed was 15.7% compared to 13.5% for non-disabled workers. By 2019/20 these figures had, fallen to 14.8% and risen to 14.1% . The gap had therefore closed from 2.1 percentage points in 2013 to 2014 to 0.7 percentage points in 2019 to 2020.

Both disabled and non-disabled people have seen a significant fall, in the proportion of workers who are self-employed, during the past year. For disabled workers the proportion has fallen, by 1.2 percentage points, to 13.6%. For non-disabled workers there was a fall, of 1.4 percentage points, to 12.7%.

There is a lot of variation in employment rates for different health conditions. For example, people whose main health condition is severe disfigurements, skin conditions, allergies are nearly three times more likely to be in employment compared to someone whose main health condition is severe or specific learning difficulties . Disabled people whose main health condition is musculoskeletal are more likely to be in employment compared to those with a mental health condition.

The difference in employment rates for different conditions may be related to the effect the condition has on a persons day-to-day activities. For example, 6.7% of people with severe disfigurements, skin conditions, allergies reported that their condition effected their day-to-day activities a lot compared to 49.8% for severe or specific learning difficulties .

Employments rates for health conditions where the condition is secondary are generally lower than those for main conditions. This is because people with a secondary condition will, by definition, have more than one health condition. We know that the more health conditions a person has the less likely they are to be in employment .

In The Us People With Hearing Disabilities Have The Highest Annual Earnings$48500

Disability facts suggest that annual income varies among people with disabilities. According to Cornell University, of all people with disabilities, those with hearing disabilities have the highest average yearly income. On average, they make $48,500 a year. In comparison, the annual earnings of people with cognitive disabilities stand at $35,400, on average.

Per Cent Of Canadians Live With A Disability

According to the Canadian Survey on Disability released today by Statistics Canada, about 3.8 million working-age Canadians self-identified as disabled in 2012. That’s 13.7 per cent of us. Nearly one in 10 working-age Canadians reported having a disability in 2012. In 2006, the Canadian Human Rights Commission reported that 4.4 million Canadians live with a disability. Disabled Employees Are As Likely To Be In Quality Work As Non

The data in this sub-section is originally sourced from the article Job quality indicators in the UK hours, pay and contracts: 2018 published by the Office for National Statistics in December 2019. The data is experimental and is the first exploratory analysis of the indicators of quality work. More information on the data, definitions and plans for future research can be found in the article.

This analysis does not constitute a government definition of quality work.

The ONS defined quality work through 3 key measures:

  • hours worked
  • pay
  • desired contract type

Good hours employees who are not working more than 48 hours per week, do not wish to work more hours in their current job and are not looking for a replacement or supplementary job to increase their hours worked

Not in low pay employees who are earning above two-thirds of median pay nationally

Desired contract type employees who either have a permanent contract or those with non-permanent contracts for reasons other than being unable to secure a permanent contract.

The industries both disabled people and non-disabled people are most likely to work in are:

  • Human health and social work activities
  • Wholesale, retail trade and repair of motor vehicles
  • Education

These 3 industries accounted for 42.6% of disabled and 35.4% of non-disabled workers. Disabled workers are least likely to be employed in Agriculture, forestry and fishing, as were non-disabled workers .

Certain industries have been impacted more than others by the coronavirus pandemic. The proportion on disabled people working in Human health and social work activities and Public administration and defence social security has increased over the past year . Conversely, the proportion on disabled people working in Accommodation and food services, Construction and Manufacturing has decreased over the same period . Similar patterns have been seen for non-disabled workers.

How Does Travel Vary By Trip Purpose

People age 18 to 64 with disabilities take fewer trips than people without disabilities for work trips and social and recreational trips, but not for shopping and errand trips and medical and dental trips . This is also true for people age 65 or older with disabilities . Workers age 18 to 64 with disabilities, who are more likely to work part-time than workers without disabilities, take fewer work trips than workers without disabilities . Those workers also make slightly fewer social, recreational, and school trips .

The differences in trip rates for people with disabilities are larger for non-workers than for workers. Non-workers with disabilities make fewer social, recreational, and school trips than non-workers without disabilities . They also make fewer shopping and errand trips . As described later, people with disabilities do not engage in more online activity as a potential substitute for trips.

The Increasing Number Of Disabled People In Employment Is Being Driven By 3 Main Components Of Change

Disabilities

There are 4 major components of change in the number of disabled people in employment:

  • overall working-age population
  • non-disabled employment rate
  • the employment rate gap

Each of these factors had shown improvements since 2013 to 2014. However, we do not know which components had the most impact. This is because it is not possible to directly measure the impact of each component, because the components interact with each another.

An indirect measure of each component can be modelled using a hypothetical scenario by assuming that, while that component followed the path observed in the data, all other components remained constant at the levels observed in Q2 2013 this is the earliest comparable date using the current definition of disability so has been used as the baseline. A similar approach can be used to estimate the interactions between components.

For example, the combined impact of increases in both disability prevalence and in non-disabled employment is greater than the sum of the impact of prevalence alone and the impact of non-disabled employment alone. That difference gives us an estimate of the interaction effect between these 2 components of change. See Background information and methodology for more details on how these estimates are derived.

How Many People In The United States Have A Disability

  • An estimated 48.9 million people, or 19.4% of the non-institutionalizedcivilians, have a disability.
  • An estimated 24.1 million people have a severe disability.
  • An estimated 34.2 million people, or 17.5%, have a functional limitation.

As defined in the 1994 Census survey, a person with a severe disability is one who is unable to perform one or moreactivities of daily living has one or more specific disabilities or is a long-term user of assistive devices such aswheelchairs, crutches, and walkers.

Disability In The Us 30 Years After The Americans With Disabilities Act

According to US Census Bureau estimates, there were just over 40 million Americans with a disability in the US in 2018. 7.6 million were employed.

On July 26, 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans With Disabilities Act into law, which extended civil rights protections to people with disabilities and looked to prevent discrimination against the disabled in the workplace and in public spaces.

Thirty years later, the most recent census data shows that there were just over 40 million Americans with a disability in the US, or 13% of the population, not including those who are in institutions like prison, or long-term care facilities.

  • Have physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
  • Have a history or record of such an impairment.
  • Is perceived by others as having an impairment. The ADA does not specifically list all of the impairments that are covered, but the 2018 American Community Survey sought to examine a number of common disabilities.

The 2018 ACS provides context about who the ADA protects. Additional data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the role of Americans with disabilities in the workforce.

Employment Of People With Disability

COVID could open up playing field for disabled people in the workforce
  • People aged between 15 and 64 years with disability have both lower labour force participation and higher unemployment rates than people without disability .
  • There are 2.1 million Australians of working age with disability. Of these, just under half were employed , compared with 80.3% of people without disability.
  • Australias employment rate for people with disability is on par with developed countries. In developing countries, 80% to 90% of people with disability of working age are unemployed, whereas in industrialised countries the figure is between 50% and 70%.
  • 34% of people with disability are managers & professionals.
  • Graduates with disability take 61.5% longer to gain fulltime employment than other graduates.
  • Almost one in five people with disability aged 15-24 years experienced discrimination. In almost half of those instances, the source of discrimination is an employer.
  • Global research has found that when employee health and wellness is managed well the percentage of engaged employees increases from 7% to 55%.
  • 73 percent of employees who say they work at a purpose-driven company are engaged, compared to just 23 percent of those who dont.
  • A higher proportion of people with a profound or severe disability were working full time in 2018, 11.4% compared with 7.9% in 2015. This is driven by an increase in women with a profound or severe disability working full time .

Disabled Workers Are More Likely To Be Working Part

Disabled workers are less likely to be working full-time compared to non-disabled workers and consequently more likely to be working part-time. The past year has seen a slight shift towards full-time employment with the percentage of disabled workers working full-time increasing from 65.4% to 67.3%. A similar pattern has been seen for non-disabled workers but to a lesser extent . These changes are at least double the magnitude of any other annual change seen in the previous seven years.

Disabled People Are Equally Likely To Be Working For A Small Or Medium Sized Employer

The proportion of employees working for small or medium sized employers is roughly the same for both disabled and non-disabled people. There has been a shift in the past year with both disabled and non-disabled employees being more likely to work for medium or large employers as opposed to small employers. Small employers however still make up the largest group 43.5% of all employees.
