Why the US Unemployment Benefit System is Better Than Canada’s $2000/month (Pays More, Lasts Longer)

It can be frustrating trying to contact the California Employment Development Department about State Disability Insurance or Paid Family Leave because EDD staff are often extremely busy and hard to reach, but it is important to keep trying, especially if you have questions about your application or what’s happening with your benefits. EDD provides a list of ways to contact them, including online chat, phone, local offices, and by mail. You may need to try more than one way to contact EDD.

Tip: If you are contacting them by phone, the main English phone line is often busy, and you might want to call one of the non-English phone numbers — the people who answer those lines are knowledgeable about SDI and speak English in addition to the other language.Note: DB101 cannot answer questions about your SDI claim. If you have questions, please contact EDD.

Unemployment Benefits Recipients Are Not Eligible

Being unemployed can be tough on everyone involved. Fortunately, most countries offer unemployed workers unemployment insurance. These benefits are paid weekly but recipients only receive a percentage of their gross income. It depends on the province or territory you reside in. The federal maximum unemployment benefits are $573 per week or $54,200 per year.

To qualify for unemployment benefits, you must have been employed in insurable employment. Other requirements include no-fault job loss, laid off for seven days consecutively in the past 52 weeks, worked for a specific number of hours, are willing to return to work or another available job position, and continuously look for employment.

All workers laid off from their jobs are required to keep a log of their employment attempts. These documents must be submitted to the government via landline or Internet every two weeks. If you fail to submit your employment attempt documentation to the government, you will be at risk of losing your unemployment benefits.

Workers who resigned from their positions or quit their jobs without prior notice are not eligible for Canadian unemployment benefits.

In addition to this, unemployment benefits recipients are not qualified for disability benefits.

B Panel Data Analyses

It is difficult in a time-series analysis to control for all potential spurious sources of co-movements. Moreover, a key source of exogenous variation in exhaustion ratesextensions and reductions in UI durationsis quite variable across states, which trigger on and off UI extension tiers and programs at various times. We thus prefer estimates based on the state-by-month panel. The panel dimension allows us to control for other factors that influence the time pattern of DI applications, identifying the exhaustion effect from differences across states in exhaustion trends. Estimates are presented in .

B Modeling Unemployment Insurance Exhaustion

The complex history of EUC and EB created a great deal of variation in the duration of UI benefits and thus in the timing of UI exhaustion. Unfortunately, while the Employment and Training Administration compiles weekly counts of initial UI claims, no comparable data series is available for exhaustions. We take two approaches to approximating the number of exhaustions.

The solid line in shows the estimated number of UI exhaustions each month using this method. Exhaustions were fairly stable, at around 210,000 per month, through early 2008. Measured exhaustions turned sharply negative in July and August of 2008, following the creation of EUC. They then fell and became more volatile, with two dips into negative terrain following EUC expansions in February and December 2009. Exhaustions spiked enormously during the temporary EUC expiration in June 2010, only to turn negative again in August 2010 after the program was reauthorized. Following this episode, the series has bounced around a level similar to that seen before the recession but higher than the 20089 average.

Estimates of the number of Unemployment Insurance exhaustions per month, 200412. Simulation1st exhaustion series is censored at 1.4 million in June 2010 true value is 2.46 million.

Can I Collect Unemployment If I Am Terminated While On Disability

Edd Unemployment Contact Number

If you are terminated while on disability, you may be able to collect unemployment. However, as long as you are unable to perform your job duties, you will be unable to collect unemployment benefits. All 50 states have the same requirements for a person to be eligible for unemployment compensation. First, the individual must be physically able to work. Second, the person must available for duty. Third, the person must be actively interviewing for jobs.

In most cases, those who are terminated from employment while out on short term disability will be able to go on and receive unemployment benefits. This is because they are likely to recover from their disabling condition sooner rather than later and, therefore, be able to perform their job duties. Those who are terminated while on long term disability, however, may remain unable to work. Because of this inability to retain substantially gainful employment due to disability, a person would be unable to collect unemployment.

Should you be terminated while on disability and be eligible for unemployment benefits, you should file for these benefits as soon as you recover. Because the amount of wages you earned in the year you seek to collect benefits may be affected by your disability leave, you may be able to use an alternate base year. The alternate base year set by your date of disability will allow you to qualify for unemployment benefits based on what you made in a normal year that was not affected by your disability.

You Have Paid Ei Premiums

If you are employed in insurable employment, your employer will deduct EI premiums from your wages or salary. These premiums go into the EI Fund. There is no minimum or maximum age for paying EI premiums.

You pay EI premiums on all your earnings up to a maximum amount. In 2020, for every $100 you earn, your employer will deduct $1.58, until your annual earnings reach the maximum yearly insurable amount of $54,200. The maximum amount of premiums to be paid in 2020 is therefore $856.36.

Since Quebec has its own program that offers maternity, paternity, and parental benefits, the Government of Canada has adjusted the premiums accordingly for that province. In 2020, the premium rate for workers in Quebec is set at $1.20 for every $100 of earnings, up to a maximum amount of $650.40 for the year.

When Can You Get Unemployment And Disability

Because unemployment requires a claim that you are able to work and disability generally requires a claim that you cannot work, it is very rare to be able to get both at the same time. Situations where you may get both at the same time include the following:

    • You are able to do some work that is not similar to previous work you have done.
    • Your work does not rise to the level of substantial gainful activity.

A long term disability attorney can help you determine whether you meet these eligibility requirements.

The Problem With Applying For Unemployment Benefits And Ltd

Long-term disability insurance carriers and plan administrators will not hesitate to use an application for unemployment benefits against you. They may interpret your application as evidence that you think you can work. They may also find that you lack credibility because you’re trying to maintain two supposedly contradictory positions at once. You’re filing a claim for disability benefits based on your inability to work while at the same time affirming to the unemployment agency that you’re ready and available to work.

Your state’s unemployment agency may make similar inferences if it discovers you’ve filed a claim for LTD benefits: namely that you’re not “ready, willing, and able” to work and therefore don’t qualify for benefits.
