Obtain A Receipt Wait For Your Ssn Card

Anyone applying for a Social Security Number will receive a “receipt,” consisting of a form letter confirming that you have submitted an application. There are three different versions of this receipt, depending on circumstances:

Your application is accepted and will take 10-14 days
Your application is under processing and may take 1-3 months for review
Your application has been rejected

How Do I Apply For A Social Security Number

Step 1: Be in the U.S. for 10 Days with ‘Active’ Record

If you are in F-1, H-1B or J-1 status, the data that confirms your status and the fact that you are eligible for a Social Security Number has to be accessed on-line by the agent of the Social Security Administration at the time you apply. The data will not travel from the Immigration Service to the SSA database until two conditions apply:

You must have been in the U.S. for at least 10 days. It may take up to 10 days after any entry into the U.S. for the SSA system to be updated with your entry information. Note that this applies to any re-entry to the U.S., including returning from a vacation, when you receive a new I-94 entry record/number.

If you hold F-1 or J-1 status, you must be “registered” or “validated” in SEVIS. When you first arrive in the U.S. for your new program/job, you must check in with OIA. In most cases, this is accomplished through an online check-in form. When this check-in procedure is completed, we register/ validate your record in SEVIS. This confirms that you have arrived at the University in Chicago. It will take about 3 days for your registration to be updated in the SSA system.As long as you checked in with OIA when you first arrived on your current immigration, your record will be ‘active’ or ‘validated’. You do not need to confirm with OIA unless you have a special circumstance.

Who Is Eligible For Social Security

The following people are eligible to receive social security benefits:

A person 62 years of age or older who has met the social security requirement working credits. This occurs by remaining employed for a steady and reasonable amount of time to pay into the social security fund.

A spouse under the age of 62 who has a dependent disabled child living with him or her.

High school students from the ages of 18 to 19 as long as they are enrolled full time in high school and have an unmarried status.

Any person with a disability that was legally verified before the person reached 22 years of age.

Divorced person who is unmarried and who is over 62 years of age may qualify for social security benefits from a previous spouse if they were married for more than a decade.

Social Security Administration Benefits Authorizer And Four Others Charged In $19 Million Kickback Scheme

CHICAGO A benefits authorizer at the Social Security Administration in Chicago authorized over $1.9 million in fraudulent benefits to more than 150 recipients who kicked backed cash to him and several others, according to a federal indictment unsealed today.

The benefits authorizer, JAYSON CRUZ, 39, of Chicago, worked at the Social Security Administrations Great Lakes Program Service Center in Chicago. Cruz and four others were arrested this morning by federal authorities.

The ten-count indictment, which was filed on June 30, 2015, and unsealed today following the arrests, alleges that the defendants fraudulently caused the Social Security Administration to issue more than $1.9 million in payments to approximately 154 recipients between approximately September 2009 and December 2013.

Cruz was charged with ten counts of wire fraud. MONICA KNOX-SUMRELL, 41 VONZELL WHITE, 33 MICHAEL ELARDE, 37 and JERRY BROWN JR., 36, all of Chicago, were each charged with two counts of wire fraud. All five defendants pleaded not guilty during their arraignments this afternoon before U.S. District Judge Virginia M. Kendall in Chicago. All five defendants were released on their own recognizance. Judge Kendall scheduled a status hearing for 9/16/15 for all defendants.

The indictment also alleges that Knox-Sumrell falsely represented to recipients that she worked for the Social Security Administration in order to further the scheme

The investigation is ongoing, the officials said.
