Ssdi/ssi Approval Rates: From Application To Hearing
Our survey confirmed what many people suspect about Social Security disability: Its difficult to get benefits. Only about four in ten readers were ultimately approved for SSDI or SSI benefits. But approval rates at different stages in the process varied significantly.
Most people get turned down at the initial application stage. Less than a quarter of our readers were approved at the initial application stage 77% were denied. Some of these readers were denied for technical reasons, such as not having enough work history for SSDI or having too much income for SSI . Others were denied because their medical conditions weren’t severe enough. Based on medical eligibility alone , Social Security’s statistics for applications filed in 2018 show that 41% of SSDI applications and 37% of SSI applications were approved at the initial stage.
What Do I Need To Know About Advance Designation
You should be aware of another type of representation called Advance Designation. This relates to the Strengthening Protections for Social Security Beneficiaries Act of 2018, which was signed into law on April 13, 2018.
Advance Designation allows capable adult and emancipated minor applicants and beneficiaries of Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, and Special Veterans Benefits to choose one or more individuals to serve as their representative payee in the future, if the need arises.
To help protect whats important to you, we now offer the option to choose a representative payee in advance. In the event that you can no longer make your own decisions, you and your family will have peace of mind knowing you already chose someone you trust to manage your benefits. If you need a representative payee to assist with the management of your benefits, we will first consider your advance designees, but we must still fully evaluate them and determine their suitability at that time.
You can submit your advance designation request when you apply for benefits or after you are already receiving benefits. You may do so through your personal account, by telephone, or in person.

The Blue Book Listing And Disability Benefits
The SSA assesses each claim by referring to the Blue Book. This contains fourteen different categories of medical conditions, including diagnoses, symptoms and treatment. The first thing the SSA does when receiving your disability benefit claims application is to find your medical condition in the Blue Book.
If it is not listed, then it could be hard to qualify for disability benefits. However, you may find it under another of the 14 categories which may not be so easy to identify, but in this case you will need to support your claim with the right evidence.
There are some situations when whatever you do you will not qualify for disability benefits but sometimes the SSA will ask you to complete a residual function capacity form . The RFC determines the amount of work you can do given the limitations of your medical condition. Your physician is the person who is permitted to complete the RFC form and will use your medical history and some tests you will be asked to do when filling in the appropriate information on the form.

Applying For Both Ssdi And Ssi
Some people apply for benefits from both Supplemental Security Income and SSDI . Although medical eligibility for these two programs is the same, SSI is a need-based program for people with disabilities and little or no income or assets. SSDI applicants sometimes receive concurrent benefits because their SSDI benefits are so low that they meet the financial eligibility requirements for SSI. If their applications are approved for both programs, the additional SSI benefits will bring their monthly checks up to the SSI maximum. Government data for 2019 showed that 10% of those who received disability benefits got concurrent benefits .
Our readers reported that the overall approval rate for concurrent applications was considerably lower than for SSDI-only applications: 15% at the initial application level and 36% at the hearing stage.

How To Get Ssi In Texas
You must meet these eligibility requirements to qualify for disability benefits from SSI:
- Be disabled. The SSA uses the same evaluation criteria for SSI disability determination that it does for SSDI applications. Your physical or mental impairment must meet the standards of the Blue Book and prevent you from working to support yourself.
- Have very limited income and few financial resources. Your assets cannot exceed $2,000 for an individual . Your income will reduce the amount of your monthly benefit. The SSA does not count all types of income or assets when evaluating an applicants eligibility.
The SSI program typically pays far less in monthly cash benefits than the SSDI program does. The SSI program is a safety net for disabled people who do not qualify for SSDI benefits. Usually, not having enough work credits to be eligible for SSDI causes people to apply for SSI.

What are your chances of being approved for benefits? To help answer that question, we surveyed readers across the U.S. who recently went through the process of applying for SSDI. Here’s what we learned about their experiences.

Disability Application To Hearing
First, some background on the procedure of applying for SSI or SSDI: After you submit an application, the Social Security Administration will start out by deciding whether you meet the financial and/or work-history requirements. If you don’t, you’ll receive a nonmedical, or “technical,” denial. If you advance to the next stage, a disability examiner will then put your application through a five-step medical evaluation.
Few applicants make it through both of these stages successfully. In fact, more than three-quarters of our readers told us their applications were denied at the initial application level. It’s worth pointing out that these results included technical denials as well as denials based on medical eligibility for disability benefits. According to government statistics for applications filed in 2018, many people receive technical denials: 45% for SSDI applicants and 18% for SSI. In that same year, approval rates at the application level based on medical eligibility alone were 41% for SSDI and 37% for SSI. This means that applicants who meet the nonmedical requirements of SSDI or the financial requirements of SSI have a better chance of winning benefits.
When the initial denial is for a medical reason, applicants can appeal the decision by requesting a hearing. Our survey showed that approval rates at the hearing level were nearly twice as high as at the initial application stage.
