Changes In Law About Veterans In Assisted Living Units
If you are a war time era veteran and either you or your spouse is living in an assisted living residence, you may be eligible for benefits from the VA. This is the same benefit that one in a nursing home can apply for. The VA will need to know the cost of all medical expenses and income and assets. If eligible a veteran can receive from $1.00 up to $1644.00 for a single veteran and up to $1949.00 for a married veteran. This will depend on information that is supplied to the VA. Gi Bill Beneficiary Information
In order to receive the GI Bill the recipient there are some steps in the process that must be followed. In simplified form, they are listed below:
Inpatient Visitor Restriction Update:
Due to the current COVID surge modifications have been made to our current inpatient visitor restriction policy which are effective as of 1/14/2022.
- Adult Medical/Surgical/ICU inpatients: One visitor/support person is allowed per patient per day.
- Visiting hours are from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
- Must be age 18 or older and not exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 or any other contagious illness.
- Will be screened for symptoms of fever and illness when arriving and asked which patient they are visiting.
- Must wear a medical grade face mask at all times, including in patient rooms, and will be asked to stay in designated areas.
- Exceptions for end-of-life visits are allowed with visiting hours modifications and increase visitors on case-by-case basis.
- Visitors who are non-compliant with hospital expectations related to visiting hours and/or mask compliance may be asked to leave.
This change is to maintain staff, patient and visitor safety by reducing exposure occurrences.

Lifetime Hunting And Fishing License
Veterans in receipt of at least a 0% service connected disability can receive a lifetime hunting or fishing license for a $7.00 fee. In order to qualify, the Iowa resident must have served on active federal service and was disabled as a result of that service. Apply:Hunting and Fishing License Application

Iowa Veterans Trust Fund
The State of Iowa has established a multi-million dollar fund to provide certain services to veterans. Beginning in December 2007, interest from this fund has been available to provide relief for Iowa veterans and their families. Currently, funds are used for unemployment or underemployment assistance due to service-related causes, assistance with vision, hearing, dental care, durable medical equipment, and prescription drugs counseling and substance abuse services vehicle repairs housing repair and transitional housing in an emergency. For-Profit Education Fraud Targeting GI Bill Benefits
While anyone can fall victim to education fraud, veterans are often targeted. For-profit schools know that many veterans transitioning into civilian life will want to use their GI Bill benefits or federally-guaranteed student loans to gain more education and skills to obtain civilian sector jobs.
Some for-profit institutions will provide misleading information regarding the accreditation of their school, graduation rates, job placement rates, or even the quality of the offered education programs. Veterans may be left with school credits that don’t transfer, a degree that is not respected by potential employers, and debts that are difficult to pay off.
To protect yourself from for-profit education fraud:
Some veterans and families are contacted by organizations or individuals offering to help veterans obtain their veterans benefits for a fee. Some imply they are a governmental agency or official organization.
Veterans can be assured that there are no fees involved in obtaining veterans benefits. And there are numerous veterans service organizations that will help veterans obtain these benefits for free. This program furnishes an honorary high school diploma to qualifying veterans who did not complete high school due to armed service enlistment. Interstate Compact On Educational Opportunities For Military Children
This Interstate Compact aims at addressing perceived inequities facing school children of military parents when they are required to relocate across state lines. The Compact allows the laws of the “sending” state to apply to transferring students from military families in the school of the “receiving” state for such policies as graduation requirements, advanced placement, and age of student enrollment. Veterans Designation On Iowa Drivers Licenses And Ids
Honorably discharged veterans may request the Veteran designation be placed on their drivers license or non-operator identification card. Veteran must present a copy of their DD214 or applicable discharge document to the Iowa DOT. The veteran must then complete an Iowa DOT Application form. Note: Veterans may request the veteran designation anytime they seek a new card, not just at the time of renewal. National Guard Tuition Benefits
Present Iowa National Guard members in good standing are eligible for up to $2,700 per semester for full time enrollment. Part-time students are eligible for $196 per semester hour. In recognition of their service to our nation, we act as advocates who share an understanding of the veterans service and their needs.
Linn County Veteran Affairs has accredited County Veteran Service Officers who are professionals that receive the most current training on the scope, significance, and application of ever-changing federal, state, and local laws. Staff works with the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs and other local organizations in order to help veterans and their eligible family members receive the maximum benefits they have rightfully earned.
All services are provided free of charge.
