Typically, yes. If the benefits are integrated, the EDD will pay you an amount for SDI, and your employer or its insurance carrier will pay you an additional amount to cover some or all of the difference between SDI and your full wages.

What Are The Different Types Of Disability Benefits In Arizona
There are a number of disability benefits for which you may be eligible. State and federal programs are different but can impact each other.
The Social Security Administration runs two federal disability programs. California is one of a handful of states that has a paid short-term disability program. This program, which is funded by employee contributions made through payroll withholding, pays employees a portion of their usual wages while they are temporarily unable to work due to disability.
Most California employees qualify for disability benefits through this program, as long as they meet the state’s eligibility requirements. If you meet these requirements and file the necessary paperwork, you will receive benefit payments, generally every two weeks, until you are able to return to work.

Filing for disability in Florida is much like filing in any state because Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income are federal programs. However, there are variations between the states on how they handle the application process and payment of disability benefits. How Is The Sdi Benefit Calculated
The SDI program generally pays 60-70% of the average wages you earned before the start of your disability. To calculate your average income, SDI looks at a yearlong period that starts around 17 months before your disability, and ends around 5 months before your disability. Those 12 months are called your base period. SDI divides your base period into 4 quarters and uses the quarter when you had the highest wages to figure your average income, and your benefit amount.

Women can also use short-term disability to recover after giving birth. In the state of New York, you apply for short-term disability by filling out a form with your doctor’s help.
What If I Dont Have Money In My Base Period Because I Was Unemployed Before I Became Disabled
There are two rules that may help you if you do not have earnings in your base period due to unemployment:
First, if you have an unexpired claim for unemployment insurance benefits when you are seeking SDI, then you may use the base period you used for your unemployment insurance claim.
Second, if you were unemployed during any quarter of your base period meaning out of work for 60 or more days and looking for work you may disregard that quarter and begin your base period three months earlier than the period set forth in the above chart. For each quarter you were unemployed, you may go back another quarter.

Can You Get Short Term Disability If You Are Already Pregnant
If you just started a job that offers short term disability insurance or you have an open enrollment period at work you should be able to sign up for STD coverage without any problems. Thats because employers offer group insurance plans that dont require medical underwriting you dont have to answer health questions or undergo a medical exam. Pre-existing condition limitations may apply. Please review your Group policy for details.
Individual STD policies require medical underwriting, and pre-existing conditions are typically excluded. If you apply during your pregnancy, it will be considered a pre-existing condition. While the insurance company may write the policy, any disability or claim relating to pregnancy will likely be excluded.

Long Term Disability Coverage Can Provide Further Protection
If you have long term disability insurance that you purchased through the workplace or as an individual from an insurance company, it typically wont cover a typical pregnancy and recovery, due to the longer elimination period required under an LTD plan. However as with STD coverage complications are another matter, and if an issue renders you unable to work, it will generally be covered if the disability satisfies the benefit waiting period for the LTD. Also, pregnancy can worsen other conditions that may have been dormant or under control, such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis. Post-partum depression can be issue for people who have never experienced mental health issues, and if it causes you to miss work it could be covered by your LTD policy.
One thing to remember about LTD coverage: compared to short term disability, theres typically a much longer waiting or elimination period until benefit payments start. The typical STD plan has a 2-week waiting period with an LTD plan, the elimination period commonly lasts 60-90 days, but it can be as long as a year.

What Counts As Disability
Any time your doctor certifies that you cannot do your job, you are disabled in the eyes of EDD. You don’t have to be unable to do any type of work, you just have to be unable to do the regular and customary duties of your job.
Pregnancy. You can generally receive SDI two to four weeks before you are due to give childbirth and for four weeks after your child is born .
Elective surgery. Recovery from elective and cosmetic surgeries is covered by SDI, as long as your doctor certifies that you are disabled.

Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefits
The Canada Pension Plan provides monthly payments to people who contribute to the plan during their working years.
You may be eligible for CPP disability benefits if:
- you contributed to the CPP for a certain number of years
- you’re under 65 years old
- you have a severe and prolonged mental or physical disability
- your disability prevents you from working on a regular basis
The benefits include payments to children of a person with a disability.
Apply as early as possible if you think you’re eligible for CPP disability benefits. Quebec residents may be eligible for a similar program called the Quebec Pension Plan . It may take several months to process your application.
