Financial Ssa Programs For Depression Disability
The benefits program that works best for you will depend on your symptoms of depression and your current financial needs.
The SSI program is there to help you if your income isnt enough to meet necessities. Its a monthly payment program determined by your current income and assets.
Theres no set amount of help you may receive on SSI. If your state offers similar disability programs, you may receive less money from federal aid.
Most adults under the age of 65 who qualify for SSI have resources that total less than $2,000.
SSDI benefits are payments available if depression prevents you from working. To receive SSDI, your disability must be expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.
You cant receive SSDI benefits for a short-term disability or a partial disability. If you live with seasonal affective disorder, for example, you may not meet the long-term requirements of diagnosis.
You must also be younger than your full retirement age when you apply.
In some cases, your family members may be eligible for SSDI payments while you live with a depression disability.
SSDI is a calculated number based on your employment history. In 2021, the average payment was approximately $1,200 monthly.
Its not uncommon to receive a rejection letter from SSDI. This is likely due to some details needed in your application. However, you can re-apply as many times as needed until you get approved.
The Main Eligibility Rules
You wont be able to make a new claim for PIP once you reach State Pension age.
Youll continue to get PIP if you were getting it before you reached State Pension age, unless your circumstances change.
To be eligible for PIP you must be aged between 16 and your State Pension age. You can check your State Pension age on GOV.UK.
You must also:
- find it hard to do everyday tasks or get around because of a physical or mental condition – you can make a claim whether you get help from another person or not
- have found these things hard for 3 months and expect it to continue for another 9 months
- usually be living in England, Scotland or Wales when you apply
- have lived in England, Scotland or Wales for at least 2 years – unless you’re a refugee or an immediate family member of a refugee
There are exceptions to these rules if youre terminally ill or in the armed forces.
If youre already getting DLA and the DWP asks you to claim PIP there are different rules.
If you have a terminal illness the rules about how long you’ve found things hard and been living in England, Wales or Scotland for 2 years dont apply. See our advice on how to claim PIP if youre terminally ill.
If youre in the armed forces the rules on living and applying in England, Wales or Scotland dont apply.
Is Depression A Disability In Canada
Yes. All disability benefits providers in Canada recognize depression as a disability. Its a condition that can qualify for benefits.
However, a diagnosis on its own wont qualify you.
Providers pay benefits to people who can prove their conditions keep them from working. When reviewing claims for depression, providers focus on the seriousness of your symptoms. They will consider the medical treatment youve had and future treatment plans. They look at how your symptoms affect your work and how hard you tried to keep working.
You must have all of this documented in medical records or other paperwork with your claim.

What Are The Disabling Symptoms Of Depression
Clinical depression is marked by pervasive feelings of sadness, despair, and loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. It is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.
The way depression manifests may differ from case to case, but the most common underlying symptoms include:
- Pervasive feelings of sadness and worthlessness
- Fatigue and loss of energy
- Inability to concentrate or focus
- Slowed speech and physical movements
- Unusual sleep patterns
- Loss of interest or enjoyment in all activities
- Loss of appetite and/or significant change in body weight and
- Suicidal thoughts.
Any of these symptoms, if presenting severely and frequently enough, can be disabling.
Though it may be obvious to you why you can no longer work with depression, your insurance company will require details of all your symptoms and the ways in which they specifically impair your ability to perform your job duties.
Remember that depression presents differently in each person. To fairly evaluate your long term disability claim for depression, your insurer must understand how your condition personally affects your functioning.
Benefits For Disabled Adults
SSDI is available to disabled adult workers who have paid Social Security taxes, while SSI is a need-based program only available to applicants that meet strict limitations on income and asset holdings. If you have never worked due to your mental illness, you will not qualify for SSDI. If you have financial support from friends or family, you will not qualify for SSI.

Qualifying for this credit can get some of your previous taxes refunded. It depends on the timeline of your condition. You apply by filling out a T2201 form and sending it to Revenue Canada.
If Revenue Canada denies your claim, you can request an internal appeal. If that appeal fails, then you must go to the Tax Court of Canada to appeal again.

Qualifying For Disability Based On Reduced Functional Capacity
If you don’t qualify under the SSA’s requirements for major depression, above, the SSA will next consider your depression symptoms and to what extent they impair your ability to do the usual activities of daily living, and if there is any kind of work you can be expected to do. The SSA will give you a rating of the type of work it thinks you can do . This is called your residual functional capacity , and in the case of depression, it’s called a mental RFC rather than a physical RFC.
If the SSA finds that you can do at least unskilled work, as is likely if you didn’t meet the official listing above, you won’t be granted benefits. But if the SSA finds that you cannot perform even unskilled work , the SSA might grant you benefits under a “medical-vocational allowance.” However, most claimants applying for disability benefits for depression either qualify under the official listing or don’t qualify at all.
But if you have any type of physical impairment in addition to depression, this can change. For example, if you get a mental RFC for unskilled work and a physical RFC for sedentary work, there might be few jobs you can do in this category, and you might be able to qualify for benefits under a medical-vocational allowance.
How Long Will My Disability Benefits Last For Depression
While most disability plans pay benefits for so long as you remain unable to work until you reach normal retirement age, disability benefits for substance use disorders and other mental illnesses, including depression, are often limited to a shorter payment period up to a maximum of 24 or 36 months. Nevertheless, your disability benefits cannot be limited based on depression or any other mental illness if you have a co-morbid medical condition that is also disabling. If that is the case, it is critical that you advise the insurance company of your co-morbid medical condition, that condition as well. In addition, some plans do not include certain mental health conditions or cognitive disorders in their lists of conditions subject to the limitation. It is important you understand the particular terms and limitations contained in your plan.

Is There A Specific Listing For Depression
The Social Security Administration recognizes depression under Listing of Impairments 12.04: Affective disorders, which can be found on the Social Security Administration website. However, because most of the listing is structured using medical terminology, it can be quite difficult to know whether you will meet the listing for depression. If you or a family member suffers from severe depression and are unable to work and want to know more about whether you might qualify for Social Security disability benefits, .

Benefits If Your Mental Health Means You Need Support
There are 3 main benefits that you can claim if you regularly need support to manage your mental health:
- Personal Independence Payment for people over 16 to State Pension age
- Disability Living Allowance for people under 16
- Attendance Allowance for people at State Pension age
You can only claim 1 of these benefits for yourself. If you are unsure about other benefits, use a benefits calculator.
Insufficient Objective Evidence Of Disability
Although insurers often cite insufficient objective evidence of disability to deny claims, this reason doesnt work with depression. Modern medicine has yet to find objective evidence for depression.
If you receive this as a reason, you should address it in your appeal letter. Fortunately, objective evidence is not a requirement under plans and programs.
Your letter should then focus on how your doctor followed best practices for diagnosis and treatment. Mention how you adhered to the recommended treatment faithfully. You should also emphasize all the things youve done to keep working. These aspects can make up for a lack of objective evidence.

Getting Ltd Benefits For Depression Or Bipolar Disorder Will Be Very Difficult
By Aaron Hotfelder, J.D., University of Missouri School of Law
Long-term disability insurers are generally reluctant to approve claims for benefits based on mental illnesses such as depression or bipolar disorder. Even if you’re receiving regular treatment from a psychologist or psychiatrist who supports your disability claim, your LTD carrier is likely to deny your initial application and force you to plead your case on appeal. In these difficult cases, it is critical to hire an experienced disability attorney who can guide you through the appeals process and, if necessary, file a lawsuit against your insurer.

Consideration Of Your Residual Functional Capacity
If the SSA says you don’t meet the disability listing, the SSA will consider what you can do. It does this by writing up your mental residual functional capacity . An MRFC is a description of what tasks you can do in a work setting it explains your communication skills, your ability to relate to others, your ability to speak to the public, and whether you can be reliable in showing up to work.
For instance, say you have bipolar disorder and there is evidence in your medical records that you have moderate impairment in your social functioning caused by mood swings and you have a moderate level of difficulty with concentration. Your RFC might look like the following: you have no limitations in walking/standing/sitting, you are unable to work with the public, and you are limited to simple 1-2 step instructions. This RFC would prevent you from working in many occupations, but you still would not be found disabled since there are simple unskilled jobs that do not require working with the public. Read more about how the SSA makes this decision in our article on how the SSA evaluates an RFC for disability.
The Symptoms Of Depression And Anxiety
Depression and anxiety are terrible afflictions that can completely turn your life on its head. There are treatments for these illnesses, however often they become long, drawn out intervention plans that may not be completely effective. Dealing with such medical problems can be overwhelming, and adding financial pressures because of lost time at work or medical costs just make the situation worse. Nonetheless, there could be help in the way of payments to you through the Social Security Disability and/or Supplemental Security Income programs, both administered by the Social Security Administration.
Depression is the most common not-imminently fatal medical condition leading to disability in America. The World Health Organization has identified depression as the number one cause of disability in the world with over 300 million sufferers. Depression causes a person to feel a significant state of sadness, guilt, inadequacy, dejection, and despondency. Along with such feelings there may be insomnia, restless sleep, excessive sleep, lack of energy, reduced or no sexual desire, and appetite loss or excessive eating.

What Is A Combination Of Impairments
You may suffer from a combination of severe and non-severe impairments that is, some significantly impact you, while others are less of an obstacle. Social Security can determine whether all of your impairments, when combined, prevent you from working full-time.
If you do not have a treating psychiatric or other mental health provider and your disability claim is based on anxiety or depression, you may want to ask your treating doctor to refer you for a psychological evaluation. These evaluations can be compelling evidence in a disability claim because they use standardized assessment criteria to reach a diagnosis.

If You Were Denied Disability For Your Depression Dont Give We Want To Help
Unfortunately, the sad reality is that many people, even those people who are clearly suffering from debilitating depression, are at first denied benefits. The majority of claims have to be brought before an Administrative Law Judge at a hearing. Furthermore, when someone is alleging primarily psychiatric illness as a basis for disability benefits, it is even more difficult to win.
This is mostly because it is more difficult to measure or test for purely psychological problems. That is, when someone has a broken leg you know they have a broken leg. It is more difficult to know for sure when someone actually has legitimate mental illness. This is why it is critical to work with credible medical providers and legal professionals in supporting your claim.
In addition to preparing the medical evidence in your case, we will meet with you in person several times prior to prepare you for the questions the judge is going to ask. We know that having to testify before an Administrative Law Judge is a nerve-racking process, which is why we want you to be as prepared as possible.
