So, youve finally done what many people havent: get your disability claim approved. Great job! But getting approved for disability is not yet the end of your journey. On the contrary, it is just the start of a long wait before you finally receive your first disability check.
What Is A Continuing Disability Review
The Social Security Administration is required periodically to review the cases of all people who are receiving disability benefits. Usually cases are reviewed every three years but some cases are reviewed more often. Sometimes the decision will direct the Social Security Administration to conduct a review at a certain time. Often the Notice of Award will tell you when to expect a review.

The Cost And Advantage Of A Disability Lawyer
It can be discouraging to learn how many SSDI and SSI applications are denied. But our survey pointed to a few things than improve your chances of being approved for benefitsespecially hiring a lawyer. Six in ten readers who had a lawyer’s help at some point in the process ultimately received benefits, compared to about three in ten of those who went through the process on their own.

Signs You Will Be Approved For Disability
While it may be a challenge to get approved for disability benefits initially, there are some signs that you will be approved for disability.
While nothing is for certain for sure, there are things that you can do before you send in your application, that can give you a better shot of getting approved for disability initially.
The first sign that you will be approved for disability is that you have enough work credits. In order to qualify for SSDI benefits, you need enough work credits to qualify.
How work credits are calculated is by your age and how long you worked. On average, it is usually around 40 work credits to meet the requirements. You can earn up to 4 work credits per year that youve worked.
The Second sign that you will be approved for disability benefits is that you have a sufficient of medical evidence. Medical evidence to back up your claim that you can no longer work because of your disability is the key to winning a disability claim. The more evidence you have the better. Be sure to include as much medical evidence as you can in your claim.
The third sign that you will be approved for disability, is that you have a condition that is in the SSAs Blue Book. The Blue book is the list of conditions that the SSA has put out that qualify for disability.
The SSA will look at your application and see if your symptoms and ailments match one of its listings in the Blue Book, if it does then you could be approved for disability.

Recovering From Your Disability

Once you receive notice that your SSD claim is approved, the most important question youll have is, When will my benefits be paid?Since 65% of SSD claims are denied initially, most people need to have their case heard by a judge who more carefully examines the case after your appeal is filed. That means the judge needs to issue a decision that includes detailed findings on each element of the claim. The judge dictates the decision and sends the recording to be typed up.
How long it takes to get that dictation typed up depends on whether the volume of cases in that office is heavy or light. Once its typed up, it needs to go back to the judge for review. If its accurately drafted, the judge signs it and sends it on to be processed for payment. If the document contains errors, it will be sent back to be corrected, delaying the process and slowing your first benefit payment.

So, when is the check coming? For most SSD benefits recipients, the first payment will be issued between 30 and 60 days after the approval notice arrives. Some delays are caused by a heavy caseload of the office where your payment is processed. If they are overloaded with a wave of new applications, the pace of processing slows down.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Disability Decision After The Hearing Is Held
Many judges will tell you at the hearing that the decision will be forthcoming. They might even say that it will be a few weeks. However, theres more to the story. Even if the ALJ, or administrative law judge, makes up his or her mind quickly, the decision still needs to be written up. This is done by a decision writer at the hearing office. And this can take weeks because decision writers also have backlogs.
So, it could be weeks or months after a hearing before you get a notice of decision. If it seems as though your case is taking too longer, call your lawyer and have them contact the hearing office for a status update on your hearing. I have made many of these calls and sometimes the call actually gets the case finished sooner. If a person has a terminal condition, their disability claim is expedited through the TERI process. TERI designated disability cases are generally processed in less than thirty days.

How Will I Get My Payment
Since all new SSD payments are made electronically, you can choose from three payment methods:
- Direct deposit allows the government to deposit the money directly into your bank checking or savings account. This is the easiest, most convenient method since you wont need to do anything to complete the process. Once you sign up for Direct Deposit, simply check your account on the day the payment is due.
- Direct Express debit card is a program that credits your payment to a prepaid debit card you can use for any purchase where charge or debit cards are accepted or at any ATM. Be warned, however, that debit cards can be lost or stolen. Although you can replace a card if you lose it, the inconvenience and inability to conduct transactions during the replacement process is a substantial disadvantage of these cards.
- Electronic Transfer Account is a third available method of payment designed for people who dont have conventional savings or checking accounts. An Electronic Transfer Account serves as a bank or credit union account to receive and distribute federal payments. The account holder can have funds transferred to the account from other payers if they choose to. It does not permit check writing, but it provides access to funds either by ATM, in-person bank visits or by use of a debit card issued through a bank registered with the government program. The account wont permit recurring bill payments.
