When youre looking to move to a new residence, the first thing you want to know is what the place will look like. Size, number of rooms, the view out the window, and what is included in the way of appliances, etc. all help you conjure up a mental picture of living in that space. But you also want to know about the environment beyond your own walls.

What will it be like living there? What are the surroundings like? Who lives in the same community, or nearby? Daily life can be very different from one setting to another, no matter where you live or in what type of housing. And a senior living community can be very different from other types of housing available to low-income seniors.

So, if you are considering multiple Supportive Housing options, you will need to carefully investigate what the move will mean for you. While we cant speak for others, we can give you a great idea of what its like to live in a Magnolia Manor community. Note that, even here, the details will differ somewhat depending on whether you choose Supportive Housing at Americus or Macon. But the big picture remains the same because all of our campuses reflect who we are as an organization.

What Is The Average Income For Seniors On Social Security

Social Security plays an important retirement income role for older adults. Social Security is intended to replace about 40 percent of pre-retirement income, on average, said Stern. However, the monthly benefits represent the largest source of income for many seniors, and it’s been estimated that about one-third of all retirees look to Social Security for nearly all of their income.

According to the SSA, the average estimated monthly Social Security payment in 2022 after the 5.9 percent cost-of-living increase is*:

While the table above provides a snapshot of the average Social Security monthly benefits, it is possible for retirees to receive larger monthly payments. However, the requirements are demanding. To receive the maximum Social Security retirement benefit, you’ll need to have worked at least 35 years while earning the SSA’s maximum taxable earnings each year.3 The maximum earnings for 2022 is $147,000.

The amount you’ll receive in maximum benefits depends on when you retire and begin claiming Social Security. The longer you wait to retire, the greater the maximum benefit amount becomes. In 2022, if you retire early at age 62, your maximum benefit would be $2,364. If you reach FRA in 2022, your maximum benefit would be $3,345. If you continue working until age 70, your maximum benefit would be $4,194.

Paying For Supportive Housing

Seniors who live independently are responsible for all of their costs of living, from rent or a mortgage payment to utilities, food, clothing, transportation, and sundries. Thats true in a senior living community as well as any other neighborhood. There are multiple resources seniors might potentially call upon to cover these expenses.

• Very low-income
• Extremely low-income

You will always have to pay your share, but you wont have to worry about your own funds running out, because the income you receive from disability, SSI or Social Security will continue as long as you live.

Medicare and Medicaid Do Not Cover Housing

Neither Medicare nor Medicaid will pay for room and board in an independent senior living community. Medicare provides health insurance to seniors regardless where you live. Medicaid helps pay for a variety of supportive services delivered to seniors in their home, including communities such as Magnolia Manor. Exactly what Medicaid covers, and to what extent, varies from state to state as we noted earlier.

You can learn more about the Georgia Section 8 assistance application process through your local public health district. If you or your elder parent is not yet approved for Section 8, that should be your first priority, as there is usually a waiting list.

How To Get Housing For Seniors On Social Security

Social security programs usually promote improved living conditions for the elderly, and seniors can readily get housing through the social security system. Seniors must have worked for at least 10 years to be considered first-hand. Above all, the rewards will be based on the amount of money produced.

Divorced Spouse Social Security Benefits

You may qualify for Social Security’s Divorced Spouse Benefits if you are divorced. According to Benefits.gov, Social Security benefits are paid to divorced spouses of workers who receive Social Security benefits.4 Eligibility requirements include:

• You’re at least 62 years of age.
• You’re not currently married.
• You were married to your ex-spouse for at least 10 years.
• You’re not entitled to an equal or higher retirement benefit on your own work record.

The maximum amount that can be claimed by a divorced spouse is 50 percent of their ex-spouse’s FRA amount.5 This applies to both living and deceased ex-spouses.

Check Out Your State Or Local Governments Rental Assistance Programs

HUDs website features a directory of links to rental assistance programs sorted by state. Click on your states name, then scroll down to I want to Get Rental Help on the next loading page. From there, you should see a wealth of affordable housing options and rental assistance programs. Affordable housing search options should include a link to search for subsidized apartments, rental homes, etc. You can also sign up for help paying your utility bills!

Success Tip: If you find a place youre interested in, call during business hours. Even if you leave a message, dont wait for them to call you back. Keep calling until you speak to an actual person! Apartments like these get flooded with calls and requests. Stay persistent with checking in, because a squeaky wheel usually gets the grease.

How Far In Advance Should I Apply For Social Security Benefits

The earliest you can apply for Social Security retirement benefits is when you are at least 61 years and nine months of age. Whether you decide to claim as soon as you’re eligible or opt to delay your benefits, the SSA advises seniors to apply for Social Security four months before you want your benefits to start.2

Supplemental Security Income Living Arrangement

Your living condition is not good enough to feel comfort in this stage. Benefit from supplemental security income living arrangement is important. First of all you need to apply to SSI if you are 65 years old. Additionally SSI provides housing facilities for the disabled and the blind who have really low income. The benefits of this program may vary for different reasons.

As for assisted living services, if you need help paying for these, consider the Assisted Living Conversion Program or ALCP. At the time, HUD is only providing the ALCP in a select number of states including:

Search affordable housing properties listed on Volunteers of Americas website. These affordable housing options typically fall into two categories: seniors and persons with disabilities. VoA is one of Americas largest nonprofit affordable housing providers, but they also pride themselves on quality. They support at-risk populations, including those who are homeless, veterans, and people living with disabilities.

Success Tip: If a property says seniors but not persons with disabilities, call and ask anyway. Many senior-friendly housing options have accessibility features built into them, too. This includes wheelchair ramps and wider bathroom doors for people with mobility issues. Especially if youre newly disabled, finding affordable housing can be a challenge. You need something that fits your current limitations that you can afford on monthly benefits. These resources may help you or a loved one find the right place to call home that fits your budget.

Native American Housing Programs

• Indian Housing’s Office of Native American Programs – offers housing and community development programs to ensure safe, decent, and affordable housing for Native American families

These requirements include things such as the ability of the senior to pay a portion of their rent as well as being at least 62 years old. They must also fall within an annual income range as determined by HUD and be a citizen of the U.S.

A participant, named Larry, had a fixed income of $1030 per month and his rent was $675 per month 65.5 percent of his income. Larry wasnt able to afford anything much after paying for his utility bills and cable TV:

• Larry related that in the prior year, he often bought food that didnt last and he lacked money to purchase more.
• He really enjoyed his apartment and neighborhood but the financial burden was a challenge every month.
• When asked about what his struggles were, Larry reported that his high blood pressure and having Parkinsons wasnt the real issue, The only problem I have is my income.
• For Larry, moving into subsidized housing would reduce his rent by nearly half.

What Are Assisted Living Centers

These are often referred to as personal care homes and are designed for the individual who requires help with basic personal care tasks, such as brushing teeth and showering. Memory care, or specialized caregiving, for residents with dementia, is sometimes provided. Often, these centers are combined with nursing homes to satisfy the medical needs of their residents. With no age restrictions, these centers can serve those as young as 18 .

Maximum Income And Family Size

The San Francisco Mayor’s Office maintains a table that covers the median income based on percentage and the number of family members for the city’s HUD Metro Fair Market Rent Area. These are inclusionary areas determined to need diverse populations that aren’t restricted by the high cost of rent. For example, an individual applicant at 20 percent of the median income has maximum $16,150 in annual income. If this is a family of four, the income cap goes up to $23,050. The scale adjusts based on the target median income: An individual at 50 percent median income caps at $40,350, while the family of four caps at $57,650. Elderly can receive subsidies for rentals in these areas if they meet these guidelines.
