The Legal Services Center of Harvard Law has a Veterans Law Unitthat assists veterans in need of legal help. You can also contact Veterans Legal Services on their website or at 317-4474. The Military Legal Help Line can also help you locate low-cost legal services and can be reached at 552-7046. You can contact your local Veterans’ Service Officers for answers to questions about your benefits and obtaining financial assistance.

Va Disability Benefits And Discharge Upgrades
VetLex is a dedicated web-based network of coordinated pro bono legal service providers. It connects Veterans to someone who can help with a legal issue. Most legal work focuses on discharge upgrades and VA disability benefits, but VetLex has some services for other legal needs in select locations. To use this resource, youll be asked to enter information about your legal situation, then VetLex will connect you to a volunteer attorney in your area.
Local Va Legal Services And Veterans Justice Outreach
Legal help for Veterans is available at VA and includes Veterans Justice Outreach Specialists and partnerships with legal clinics. Veterans Justice Outreach Specialists identify justice-involved Veterans and contact them through outreach, and they often work with Veterans treatment courts and free legal clinics. Serving in the military shouldnt make you more likely to need legal advice, but in these litigious, complicated times, military service cant isolate you from conflicts that require legal advice. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources available for veterans, both from the government and from attorneys committed to pro bono work for veterans. It is possible to find free or discounted legal help, but it helps to have a road map to guide you.
Whether you are active duty or a veteran, a good place to start is the U.S. Armed Forces Legal Assistance Office.
Burn Pits Claims Assistance Program
NVLSP is expanding its representation of veterans to include cases before the VA on claims for service-connected disability benefits for diseases arising from exposure to burn pits overseas. If you or someone you know served on a base where burn pits were used to dispose of paint, medical/human waste, metals, plastics, rubber, etc., and you are currently seeking service-connected compensation for a condition, respiratory or otherwise, that you believe resulted from your exposure to these burn pits, NVLSP may be able to help.

Having legal challenges can get in the way of living the life you want to live. It can interfere with transitioning from the military, getting that next job or housing, as well as benefits and services you are eligible to access. The Major General Ernest A. and Marilyn Bedke Veterans Law Center began at Bay Area Legal Services in 2018 as a way to offer more services to veterans and their family members. The U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs has long held free legal clinics at VA facilities around the country. That practice was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. At this time, various legal partners of the VA hold similar events, either virtually or in person, at non-VA sites.
There are as many resources available as there are specialties among lawyers. The VA site is a good place to start a general search. For specific legal needs, you can try a more specific approach.
The American Bar Association offers a wide variety of services.
- State Side Legal promises to empower to enforce all their rights.
- VetLex describes itself as lawyers serving veterans to keep the promise of a nation. It allows veterans to contact lawyers, and allows lawyers to contact veterans.
- Military Pro Bono Resources can be found at this American Bar Association site. Help is available for veterans and active military.
- ABA Federal Free Legal Answers may provide information that allows you to proceed without contacting a lawyer.
- The Veterans Consortium offers pro bono legal advice to veterans. The Consortium is operated by a group of organizations, including the American Legion and Paralyzed Veterans of America.
- National Veterans Legal Services Programs provide pro bono legal advice for veterans with an emphasis on issues regarding disability.

This is for end-of-life plans. Its a chance for veterans and their spouses to get things in order. It happens on October 25, for a few hours.

When I came to work for the commission, what I saw time and time again, families having to deal with no plans were made. They were struggling to figure out how to get things done. And I thought, lets do something to relieve the stress here, said Allen.
Veterans and their spouses can sit down with an attorney for one hour.
They can get a free will, can do trusts, beneficiary deeds, powers of attorney for finances and health care and then also advance directives, said Allen.
Spots are limited. Its by appointment. Youll be asked to fill out paperwork before coming to the Elks Lodge on East Bennett Street on October 25. Bring your photo ID and property deed.
The event will take place on October 25, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Elks Lodge #409 at 2223 E. Bennett Street in Springfield. The event is by appointment only. The last day to RSVP is October 21. To RSVP, call Scotty Allen at 573-522-4224 or email him at .

Free Legal Advice Clinic For Veterans
We are very pleased to announce that the Veterans Legal Advice Clinic event will once again be held in person at the Knox County Public Defenders Office in 2022. There will be no January Clinic.
Any veteran seeking legal help is encouraged to attend the Legal Advice Clinic for Veterans on May 11th, 2022 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Veterans who are not able to attend the clinic in person are encouraged to continue to use the telephone clinic option. Preregistration is required for telephone clinic and veterans are asked to call Legal Aid of East Tennessee at 637-0484 to preregister.
This is a general advice clinic for a wide variety of legal issues, including family law, landlord/tenant, bankruptcy, criminal defense, consumer protection, contract disputes, child support, and personal injury, among other issues.
