Long term disability insurance usually costs between 1-3% of your salary depending on the options that you choose like how long your elimination period is, how much of a monthly benefit you want, how long you want the benefits to be paid, and whether you choose a policy that is own occupation or any occupation. If you choose a policy with a shorter elimination period or a longer period of time for benefits to be paid, your premiums will be higher, you may find the extra cost is worth it. If you dont get short term disability insurance coverage through your employer the cost of short term disability may not be worth it for your situation. To get the most bang for your buck long term disability is typically a much balanced choice.
How Long Does Long
Once long-term disability benefits have been approved, an employee can continue to receive benefits for the length of the policy term or until they return to work. Most long-term disability plans provide coverage for 36 months, although some plans can provide coverage for up to 10 years or even for the life of the policyholder.

Postpartum Depression Claims Might Be Capped At Two Years Of Ltd Benefits
Roughly 15% of women experience postpartum depression and anxiety after giving birth. PPD is more than the baby blues. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines PPD as an episode of of major depressive disorder, bipolar I, or bipolar II disorder that develops within four weeks of giving birth.
If PPD is left untreated, it can last for yearsand more than 25% of women do not report being screened for the disorder.

The effects of postpartum depression are more intense than the baby blues, and they can last much longer. For many victims, the effects interfere with their abilities to provide proper care for the baby, as well as perform other basic everyday tasks, including the duties of their profession. These effects can prevent someone from timely returning to their previous occupation following childbirth.
Some common effects of postpartum depression include:
- Dramatic mood swings
- Agitation and intense/inappropriate energy at times
- Attempting to self-harm or harm the baby
Many people with postpartum psychosis can experience thoughts or behaviors that are life-threatening. It is critical to get immediate treatment if a new mother is experiencing any of these severe and dangerous symptoms.
If a woman does not seek timely treatment for postpartum depression, which is common, it can quickly develop into a chronic depressive disorder and increase her chances of experiencing major depression in the future.

Keeping Disability Coverage Post
So, why should you keep your disability policy after childbirth? Because post-delivery complications are unpredictable, and pregnancy can awaken dormant illnesses that require more time off work. Furthermore, none of us are immune to unexpected accidents and illnesses that may interfere with our ability to work. In fact, disability causes nearly 50% of all mortgage foreclosures and is the leading cause of personal bankruptcies.2
Reviewing Your Return To Work Schedule
Your manager will review your situation to determine if your needs can be accommodated in his/her organization. They will consult with departmental human resources who will coordinate your return to work with your manager and caseworker, if you are receiving benefits through disability or long term disability.
Your manager will inform the Pay Centre of your return to work or rehabilitation schedule, once it has been approved by the employee, manager and human resources, if it differs from your pre-illness schedule. Your manager will also inform your departmental human resources, who in turn will advise the Pay Centre when you are no longer on a rehabilitation schedule. You will be required to provide the Pay Centre with a copy of the approved rehabilitation schedule from your insurer.

Usually, disability benefits are between 6 to 12 weeks based on the following conditions of your pregnancy and delivery:
- Without medical complications: You can receive benefits up to four weeks before your expected delivery date and up to six weeks after your delivery.
- You can receive benefits up to four weeks before your expected delivery date, and up to eight weeks after your delivery.
In some cases, your physician/practitioner may certify to longer periods if there are medical complications or if you are unable to perform your normal or usual job duties.

Does Aflac Cover Maternity Leave
Yes, AFLAC does pay disability benefits for childbirth, but the policy must be in force for ten months prior to the birth of the child. Its worth mentioning that not all states enforce the 10-month period.
Maximum periods of disability coverage include six weeks for non-cesarean delivery and eight weeks for a cesarean.
