It helps out a lot, because if we dont get veterans or organizations to help out, then our cadets have to go out and raise money, Hooker said.

Donations like this allow the JROTC unit to focus on other things, including community service projects, which is not just something charitable they do, but part of cadets earning promotions within the program. Hooker said the unit averages more than 4,000 hours of community service each year.

Hooker said that if local veterans organizations need help, the West Iredell Army JROTC is just a call away.

Outrage From Members After The Disabled American Veterans Building In Athens Is Vandalized

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. In Limestone County, an act of vandalism has community members outraged.

The Disabled American Veterans building in Athens was defaced with graffiti over the weekend. It all happened at the Chapter 51 building on Airport Road.

Police officers and veteran members say unfortunately, theres no surveillance video to go off of to see who did this. Theyre asking members of the public to come forward if they know anything.

An Athens police officer said hes not sure if theyre looking for just one person or if it was a group effort.

Veteran member, Alan Bridgewater explains how the damage made him feel. Just sick to my stomach. Weve worked very hard in the last several years to bring the building back up, Bridgewater said. You know, it may not be the most wonderful building to look at, but its our home.

He then explained how the vandals can help make things better. Get back over here and clean it! Paint it. And learn whats right and whats not right.

Alan says if the community wants to help with monetary donations or lend a helping hand, theyd be glad to accept.

As of right now, Athens police dont have any leads.

Why There Is No Disabled American Veterans Donation Pickup Service In The Donation Town Directory

DonationTown was asked by Disabled American Veterans to remove any of the DAV Donation pick up service contact information from our charity donation pickup directory. For practical reasons, we are including this statement and this webpage because of the inquiries we will need to answer individually if we did not.

Visitors to our website know that we do not charge any charity or donor to use the site. All charities that meet basic guidelines are welcome in our directory. Our number one goal is to help donors connect with charities in their local communities. Nevertheless, we will respect the wishes of the lawyers at Disabled American Veterans and not include DAV donation pickup scheduling information on our website.

Since we know that many of you have written in to DonationTown in the past and have asked us to include Disabled American Veterans in our charity donation pick up directory, we wanted to make sure to let you know that we did not accidentally forget to include DAV in our directory. DonationTown prides itself on being a grassroots organization and we want to encourage all of you to continue to send in information about charities in your community.

Disabled American Veterans is always welcome back on DonationTown.org, if they ever want to reconsider. Its a great charity and we want to encourage all of you to continue to support their mission by donating to DAV donation centers in your local communities.

What You Need To Know About Donating Furniture

Downsizing? Want a home refresh? Many charities will happily take furniture off your hands, whether youre upgrading your furniture, moving or spring-cleaning. The charities listed here all take smaller home furnishings like chairs, nightstands and coffee tables, but some charities wont take heavy items like your bedroom set or a sectional. Thats why its a good idea to call and ask first. Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and The Salvation Army will take large pieces of furniture, such as gently-used couches, dining tables, desks, chairs and beds. Pickup Please only accepts small items, including mirrors, nightstands, headboards and office chairs.

Instead of calling each charity to see if they will accept your furniture donation, you can also use DonationTown to find a charity that suits your needs. Once you provide your zip code, the online database will show you a list of charities in your area that will pick up your donation. After you pick a charity, you can schedule a free pickup donation. And remember, your donation is tax-deductible. So hold on to that receipt.

Disabled American Veterans History And Background

Founded in 1920, the DAV has a mission to assist servicemen’s and servicewomen’s transitions to civilian roles by offering charity services and community assistance.

The DAV collects gently used items from donation pickups to donate to veterans and their families, then sells these items in their thrift stores to raise money and fund other services. The cash they raise in their stores allows them to fund free rides for medical appointments, job training for civilian employment, VA reform legislation, and more.

Donation Process For The Disabled American Veterans Organization

Are you ready to schedule a donation pickup with the Disabled American Veterans organization? Contact your local DAV location to find out which of your items and clothing volunteers can pick up from your home. Then you can donate your items in three simple steps:

  • Contact DAV to schedule your pickup date.
  • Pack up your donation items and set them out in a convenient location in front of your home.
  • Volunteers will pick up your items and leave your tax-deductible receipt.
  • If you have donation items that don’t qualify for the DAV pickup service, such as computers, furniture, or large appliances, contact your local DAV by phone or on their website to schedule a donation drop-off at a thrift store or warehouse location.

What You Need To Know About Donating Clothing

So many of us have more clothes, shoes and accessories than we need or want. Regardless of how you ended up with 37 pairs of jeans, occasional decluttering can be good for the soul and the space in your closet, and you can help someone in need at the same time. If you need to clean out your closet for the move, even better. Now is the perfect time to donate your clothes to a charity.

The charities we list in the article will happily take your clothes, shoes, jewelry, scarves, belts, hats, bags and other accessories off your hands. They will sort through your donation, pick out what they think will sell, and put it out on the racks in the store. Stained, torn, smelly or damaged, clothes probably wont, so please be discernable and try to get rid of those yourself.

In addition to the charities weve listed, your clothes can go to Dress for Success, a charity that helps women in need find professional attire to join the workforce. Local shelters for the unhoused, domestic violence shelters or community outreach centers might also accept donations. You can also consign or sell your pricier items for charity through eBay for Charity. Another option is to donate to Planet Aid, which will try to resell your clothes to keep them out of a landfill.

What You Need To Know About Donating Books

Most charities will accept book donations, but it doesnt mean theyll take any book, in any condition. Donations to libraries generally come with more restrictions, but some charities also wont take outdated, torn, highlighted or moldy books. Like with other types of donations, please ask first if youre unsure about anything book donation-related.

Ideally, the books should be in good enough shape to hold up when you pick them up and recent enough so as not to contain very outdated information . Some charities wont accept textbooks , encyclopedias , and periodicals. Although the latter might attract some collectors, most should just be recycled.

Instead of donating to the charity, you can try to give your unwanted books to local hospitals or shelters, used bookstores for reselling, nursing homes, local literacy programs, prison libraries or those little free libraries in your community. You can also try setting up a book swap with your friends and family, or just get crafty and create art like a collage, using pages from the books you no longer want to keep.
